CLAUDINE FERN VALIQUETTE
In loving memory of Claudine Fern Valiquette, peacefully at Manitoulin Health Centre on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the age of 85 years. Born January 19, 1917 to Jim and Ettie Phillips.
Predeceased by husband Frank. Loved by children Lenora Tooley (husband Baden predeceased) of Espanola, Frank (wife Nancy predeceased) of Sudbury, Anita Lockeyer (husband Orval), Brenda Morphet (husband Harold), Michael (wife Lyn) and Zann, all of Little Current. Brought joy by grandchildren Lori, Lynn, Kelly, Greg, Tim, Melanie and Marsha. Will be missed by great grandchildren Baden John, Kari,Kyle, Justin, Devin, Adam and Hannah. Survived by sister Nedra & husband George Dillulo of Sudbury and brother Elmer & wife Pearl of Hull, QC.
Visitation was held on Monday at the Island Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Little Current on Tuesday March 12, 2002. Cremation. Donations to Daffodil Terrace would be appreciated.

CYRIL CEC E. VALIQUETTE
- A popular native of Little Current, Cyril E. Valiquette, passed away a Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury on Tuesday, June 11. He was in his sixty-first year.
Cec as he was called locally, was born in 1924, the son of Edmund and Marion Valiquette. Throughout his life, Cec was noted for his creativity, generosity and faith.
Mr. Valiquette served in the Air Force in Canada during World War II. After the war, he earned a professional hairdressing certificate. On his return to Little Current in the postwar years, he worked in and managed two clothing stores, Conlons Mens Wear, and Jones Ladies and Mens Wear. For the past three years he had been employed at the Little Current Post office. A member of the local separate school board, Mr. Valiquette also worked as treasurer at St. Bernards parish in Little Current. He gave generously of his time and effort to the parish , both as a lay reader and member of the parish council. He was also a perennial volunteer for parish activities. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Vida, Claudene, and Goldie and his brother-in-law Norman , as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Valiquette was unmarried.
The funeral service was held at St. Bernards Catholic church in Little Current, Saturday, June 15, with Father J.N. ONeill officiating. Interment in the family plot of St. Bernards. The funeral was attended by many of Cecs numerous friends, including Fr. Dave Norris, Fr. Jack Lynch, Fr. Mike Murray, Fr. George Epoch and Fr. Al Felix.

Death of Mrs. John Vance
Margaret McIlroy Vance beloved wife of John Vance Sr. passed away at her late residence at Advance on Wednesday March 11 1914 after a short illness in her 78th year.
When sixteen years old the deceased came to Canada, from Scotland, and settled near Barrie, Ont., where at the age of eighteen she married the late John Sproule, 35 years ago she and her husband came to the Manitoulin and settled at Britainville, where her husband died about thirteen years ago. In 1902 she married Mr. John Vance, who now mourns her death. Besides her bereaved husband she leaves one brother, Mr. John McIlroy, to mourn her death.
The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church and lived a devout and conscientious life.
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon and was conducted by the Rev. Geo. Bainborough. The interment took place at Long Bay Cemetery.

Died-At St. Andrews Hospital, Hamilton, on Monday, November 22th, Mr. Fred Vancise of Barrie Island. The body arrived home on Thursday evening for burial. The deceased leaves a wife and one child.

Death of Fred Vancise
Death claimed Mr. Frederick Vancise on Tuesday Nov. 12th at St. Andrews Hospital, Hamilton. He had been called to report for Military Service on November 1st and shortly after arriving in Hamilton he took the Spanish Influenza. His wife received a letter from him saying that he was improving but on Monday November 11th she received a telegram saying that he had developed pneumonia and was seriously ill. On Tuesday the message came that he had passed away at 12:15 the previous morning.
The body of the deceased came to Gore Bay on Thursday evening and was interred in the Gordon cemetery on Friday afternoon. Owing to the Flue epidemic in town they were unable to have a service.
The late Mr. Vancise was just twenty-one years of age. He was married a year ago to Miss Ruth Aelicks of Big Lake. Besides a wife and little daughter, two and a half months old, a mother, two sisters and five brothers are left to mourn his death.

Barrie Island
A gloom was cast over the neighbourhood on Monday, when the death of Mr. W. Vancise was reported. He had only been sick a few days with pneumonia, everything Dr. Baker and those attending could do was done but he passed away on Monday afternoon, March 6th, at the age of 72 years. Mr. Vancise was respected by all who knew him, as a true friend, and a kind neighbour, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in trouble. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, six sons and two daughter, Leonard, of Grand Coulee, Sask; James, of Chesley; George, Mrs. Geo. Lane and Mrs. T. Allen on the Island and Henry, Fred and Gordon at home. He was interred in Gordon cemetery on Friday March 10. The funeral service was conducted by Mr. W. Morden, of Elizabeth Bay. Mrs. Vancise and family have the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.

Member of Sunnylea Kiwanis Club. Peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 1995, at the Queensway General Hospital, in his 81st year.
Beloved husband of Marjorie. Loving father of John and his wife Penny, June McGarry and her husband Bernie, Deborah Ilton and her husband Marc. Dear grandfather of Steven Keki, Chandra Van Esterik, and Jeffrey and Julie McGarry. Brother of the late Casey. Funeral service was from the Turner and Porter Funeral Home, Butler Chapel on Wednesday, March 8. Cremation followed. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at the Queensway Hospital. Mr. Van Esterik was well known in the Little Current-Sheguiandah area having been a partner during the 1960s and 1970s in the Sheg Bay Village resort. More recently, he and his wife donated the four acre McLeans Mountain Lookout Park to the Municipality of Howland for the benefit of all.

ADA ELIZABETH CHRISTINA (LIZZIE) VAN EVERY (handwritten 1989)
VAN EVERY, Ada Elizabeth Christina (Lizzie) a resident of the Manitoulin Lodge and formerly of Meldrum Bay, passed away at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current on Monday, September 25, at the age of 90 years. She was born in Gore Bay, daughter of the late Stewart and Sarah (Cosby) Clarke. As a young girl, Lizzie had lived in Gore Bay, but had spent most of her life in Meldrum Bay, where she was involved in many community activities.
She was a member of St. Andrews United Church U.C.W. of the church; had been secretary of the school board, clerk of Dawson Township, among many other clubs and organizations. Lizzie was also a very dedicated member of the Manitoulin Chapter of the Eastern Star, and was a charter member and served for 2 years as Worthy Matron of the chapter. Her husband John Wesley Van Every predeceased in 1950.
Beloved mother of Blanche of Gore Bay; Maude and son-in-law Matt Falls of Thessalon; Helen and son-in-law Tom Clarke of Copper Cliff; Bill and daughter-in-law Pauline, and Clarke and daughter-in-law Shirley all of Gore Bay; Dale and daughter-in-law Joan of Beamsville; Jim and daughter-in-law Helen of Gore Bay and Don and daughter-in-law Rose of Grimsby. Loving grandmother of 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. 2 sisters and 5 brothers have predeceased.
Visitors may call at the Turner Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at St. Andrews United Church, Meldrum Bay on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Iain Macdonald and Mr. Erwin Thompson officiating. Interment in Meldrum Bay cemetery.

JAMES DAVID VAN EVERY
Jim Van Every, a resident of Meldrum Bay, died at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Mindemoya, on Sunday, May 15, 2005, at the age of 66 years.
He was born in Gore Bay, son of the late John and Elizabeth (Clarke) Van Every. In 1960, Jim went to Hamilton, where he worked at Firestone Tire Company for 28 years. In 1989, he and Helen moved back to Meldrum Bay, where he then worked at Lafarge until 2003. He was a very active community member, holding most all positions on the Dawson Citizens' Board, and had been an Elder of the St. Andrew's United Church in Meldrum Bay. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and in true Van Every fashion, loved to visit with family and friends and have a good laugh. He will be sadly missed by his family and his community, but many pleasant memories will be cherished.
Dearly loved husband of Helen (Falls) Van Every; loving and loved father of Dawn and husband David Irish of St. Catharines and Carla Thompson of Stoney Creek. Proud grandfather of Kevin and Jamie. Dear brother of Bill and his wife Pauline of Gore Bay, Maude and husband Matt Falls of Sault Ste Marie, Helen Clarke (husband Tom, predeceased) of Copper Cliff, Dale and his wife Joan and Don and his wife Rose all of Meldrum Bay. Drowned at Meldrum Bay, 1934
Word was received in town on Wednesday morning that Mrs. David VanEvery, aged 75 years of Meldrum Bay was drowned. The body was discovered in about two feet of water a short distance from the shore by Albert Grant and others who were in punt. At time of going to press particulars are lacking.

JESSIE BLANCHE VAN EVERY
In loving memory of Jessie Blanche Van Every, May 14, 1922 - July 8, 2004. Blanche Van Every, a resident of the Manitoulin Lodge, Gore Bay, died at the Lodge on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the age of 82 years.
She was born at Gore Bay, daughter of the late John Wesley and Ada Elizabeth Christina (Clarke) Van Every. Blanche had lived at Meldrum Bay until moving to North Bay in the early 70s, then to Garson, and finally to the Lodge about 20 years ago. Blanche enjoyed keeping busy and knitted much of the time.
Dear sister of Maude and her husband Matt Falls of Thessalon, Helen (husband Tom Clarke predeceased) of Copper Cliff, Bill and his wife Pauline of Gore Bay, Dale and his wife Joan, Jim and his wife Helen and Don and his wife Rose all of Meldrum Bay. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Clarke and his wife Shirley.
Friends called at the Culgin Funeral Home after 7 pm on Friday. JOHN CLARKE VAN EVERY
Clarke Van Every, a resident of Meldrum Bay, passed away at Mindemoya Hospital on Friday, June 6, 2003 at the age of 72 years.
He was born in Gore Bay, son of the late John Wesley Van Every and Ada Elizabeth Christina (Clarke) Van Every. He timbered for many years as a way of supporting his lifelong passion, farming. He also enjoyed the annual family hunt, snowmobiling, and many other outdoor activities. His greatest love was spending time with his family and in particular his grandchildren. Clarke took an avid interest in all of his grandchildren. With the boys the number one passion was hockey. On any given Sunday, Clarke would be there cheering them on. With his granddaughters his relationship was of a more caring nature. Last summer he and his oldest granddaughter Elizabeth set up house together in Meldrum Bay as she experienced her first summer job. Then there is Caroline. The entertainer, speechmaker extraordinaire, figure skater and all around treasure. Last but not least is our miracle baby, Rachel, a shining light in a difficult time. His whole being would lighten up when she was with him. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be sadly missed. Many fond memories will be cherished by all who knew him.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley (McCauley) Van Every in 2002. Loving father of John (wife Wendy) or Gore Bay, Lyle (wife Janice) of Lively and Joan Sheppard (husband Willis) of Mindemoya. Loving and loved grandfather of Elizabeth, Colin, Caroline, Graham, Evan, Owen and Rachel. JOHN W. VANEVERY - 1950
It was with deep regret that word was received of the sudden passing in Lockwood Clinic, Toronto, of John W. VanEvery of Meldrum Bay, on July 21st, 1950.
In his 62nd year, Mr. VanEvery was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David VanEvery. He was born in Brentwood, Ontario, on December 16th, 1888 and came to Meldrum Bay with his parents at the age of two years. On July 10th, 1919 he married Miss Elizabeth Clarke of Gore Bay and they settled on the family farm in Meldrum Bay where they have resided every since.
Showing a keen interest in the community in which he lived, the late Mr. VanEvery was for a number of years a member of the School Board and an Elder of St. Andrew's United Church and will be greatly missed by all. Although in ill health for the past three months his sudden passing came as a great shock to his many friends and relatives. He is survived by his wife and eight children, Blanche, Clarke, Dale, Jimmy and Don at home, Bill of Hamilton, Maud (Mrs. M. Falls) of Thessalon, and Helen (Mrs. T. Clarke) of Sudbury. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. J. Fitzpatrick (Maud), and Mrs. Harris (Betty) of Fort William, Mrs. Penfold (Lavina) and Mrs. Sweezey (Marjory) of Sault Ste. Marie and two brothers Jim of Gore Bay and Milton of Hamilton.
Following a short family service at home the funeral was held from St. Andrew's United Church, with Rev. H. Watts of Gore Bay in charge and Miss L. Brown assisting. Three favourite hymns of the deceased were sung: "Rock of Ages", "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "O Safe to the Rock that is Higher Than I." Mrs. E. Cadotte sang as a solo "Just Beyond the Sunset".
The pallbearers were: Messrs. H. Falls, G. Bromley, J. Millman, W. Steele, N. McDonald and A. Wickett. Interment was in the Meldrum Bay cemetery.

SHIRLEY JEAN VAN EVERY
In loving memory of Shirley Jean Van Every, November 3, 1931 - April 26, 2002.
Shirley Van Every, a resident of Meldrum Bay, died at the Sudbury Regional Hospital Site, on Friday April 26, 2002 at the age of 70 years. She was born at Tehkummah, daughter of the late Dodds and Vilda (Perrins) McCauley. Shirley taught school for 35 years, starting in Meldrum Bay, then Elizabeth Bay, Burpee and finally Gore Bay, retiring after her accident. Although Shirley was dealt a position in life that would make many others not able to cope, she enjoyed many of the simple things in life, such as driving around the countryside or going to watch the cattle with Clarke, watching wildlife, but mostly spending time with her family. Shirley's greatest enjoyment, without question was her grandchildren, her children and Clarke. Her love and memories will be cherished by each forever.
Dearly loved wife and best friend of Clarke. Loving and loved mother of John and Wendy Van Every of Gore Bay; Lyle and Janice Van Every of Lively and Joan and Willis Sheppard of Mindemoya. Proud grandmother of Elizabeth, Colin, Caroline, Evan, Owen and Graham. ANDY SCOTT VANHORN

ANNIE LAURETTA VAN HORN
In loving memory of Annie Lauretta Van Horn, March 20, 1929 - January 19, 2008. Annie Van Horn, a resident of Little Current, died at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the age of 78 years. She was born at Elizabeth Bay, daughter of the late William and Rebecca (Hubbard) Russell. Annie had worked in the kitchen at the Little Current Hospital for many years. She enjoyed country music, and liked to go to community events and community dinners. She was often seen driving her car and she loved to shop. She will be sadly missed in her community. Annie was predeceased by her husband Stuart Van Horn in 1966. She is survived by her loving brother Melvin Russell of Elizabeth Bay and sister Marie Stevens, husband Hugh of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and sister in law Elaine Russell, (husband Teasdale predeceased) of Massey. Predeceased by sister Lizzie Witty. Also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Culgin Funeral Home, Gore Bay on Tuesday from 12 - 1 pm. died at Sudbury Regional Hospital, St. Joseph's Site, on Friday, February 5, 1999, at the age of 84 years. She was born in Gordon Township, daughter of the late Thomas and Flora (Scott ) Witty. Bella had been married twice. She had been married to Boyd McKinley for 40 years, and they had lived and farmed in Burpee Township. After Boyd's death in 1971, she married Hewson VanHorn who predeceased in May of 1993. Bella had many hobbies, including crocheting, craftwork, quilting and enjoyed the outdoors. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

BETTY LOU VAN HORN
A resident of Providence Bay passed away at the Mindemoya Hospital on Tuesday, July 30, 1996 at the age of 53 years. She was born at Mindemoya, daughter of the late Frank and Rena (Bryant) Van Horn and had lived all of her life on Manitoulin Island. Betty Lou was a very accomplished Special Olympian and was in fact Manitoulins first high-profile Olympian and has a magnificent collection of Local, Provincial, National and World Awards. She had participated in Nordic Skiing in the 1988 National Winter Games in New Brunswick ; Track and Field in Ottawa at the Provincial Summer Games in 1989; the National Summer Games in Vancouver in 1990 and the World Summer Games in Minneapolis in 1991, as well as competing in skiing and track and field events for many years in all levels. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her determination and ambition is a very special gift that will always be remembered. She enjoy ed walking the beach at Providence Bay and almost single handedly kept it clean as well as keeping the roadsides litter free. She enjoyed walking, collecting things, puzzles and crafts. Dear sister and sister-in-l aw of Glen and Eula Van Horn of Elliot Lake; John and Betty Van Horn of Tehkummah; Shirley Jean and Jim Haggard of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Beverly and Janie Van Horn of Newbury; Lloyd and Judy Van Horn of Blenheim; and Delbert and Marilyn Van Horn of Cambridge. She will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews and her extended family, the Staff and Residents of MDACL. Friends were received at the Mindemoya United Church. SPECIAL OLYMPIAN PASSES AWAY
Mindemoya She was a special gift from God, said Reverend Mary Jo Eckert Tracy of Betty Lou Van Horn, who passed away on August 31.
I've been here 15 years, and Betty Lou was part of our congregation in Providence Bay for the past several years. She was s special person and the life of our congregation. She added a lot of laughter and cared a lot for people, the minister said.
Ms. Van Horn, who was 53, died of cancer in Mindemoya Hospital after living her whole life on Manitoulin Island.
As a Special Olympian, Ms. Van Horn brought home numerous medals she had won in provincial, national and international competitions. She participated in Nordic skiing in the 1988 Nation al Winter Games in New Brunswick, track and field in the Provincial Summer Games in 1989 in Ottawa, the National Summer Games in Vancouver in 1990 and the World Summer Games in Minneapolis in 1991. As well, she competed in skiing and track and field events for many years at all levels.
Ms Van Horn was an inspiration to everyone who knew her and will be remembered for her determination and drive to excel. In tribute to the popular athlete, family and friends packed the Mindemoya United Church last Friday for the funeral service, which was officiated by Reverend Eckert Tracy, Reverend Iain MacDonald and Reverend Ray Kloetstra.

Death of George Van Horn
Mr. George Van Horn was born in the Township of Uxbridge County of Ontario, Ont. He came to the Manitoulin in the early eighties and shortly afterwards took up the farm on which he lived and died.
Previous to coming to this country he married Miss Sarah Ann Story who survives him. Their family consisted of five sons and one daughter all of whom survive. Three brothers and one sister are also still living.
Mr. Van Horn�s illness was of long duration developing into paralysis of the whole system. This sad affliction was borne with Christian patience and resignation. By trade Mr. Van Horn was a stone mason and plasterer, and on the Island found a good deal of call along these lines of work He was a reliable man, full of energy and painstaking. The large funeral procession which followed his remains to Carnarvon cemetery bore evidence to the high respect in which he was held.

Mrs. Edgar Vanhorn died at her home in Providence Bay on Sunday morning Dec. 15th at 3 o�clock. Her husband was working on the A.C. Ry (sic) North of the Sault when his wife was taken ill and it was sometime before he could be reached by telegraph. On receiving word of her illness he hastened home but not in time to see her alive. The funeral took place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. the sermon being preached by Rev. Wm. Munro. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. Duncan McAllister, of Providence Bay, and leaves her husband and three little children to mourn her loss.

In Loving Memory of Noreen Sarah Jane Vanhorn, March 16, 1917 - May 5, 2008. Noreen Vanhorn, a resident of Evansville, died at the Mindemoya Hospital on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the age of 91 years. She was born in Burpee Township, daughter of the late James and Nellie (Aelick) McKinley. Noreen was predeceased by her beloved husband Raymond Vanhorn on May 14, 1988. Dearly loved sister of Bessie Witty of Evansville, husband Willard predeceased, Velma Paige of Sudbury, husband Russell Harper and George Paige predeceased, and Gladys Noland of Spring Bay, husband Herb predeceased, Arthur McKinley (predeceased), wife Annie of Sudbury and Boyd McKinley and his wife Bella (both predeceased). Meldrum Bay Boy Wounded in Holland - 1944
Casualties among island boys have been quite heavy during the past three months of fighting in France, Belgium and Holland and in several instances families have been shocked to learn that more than one member had been listed with the casualties.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vanhorn of Meldrum Bay were officially notified last week that their son, Pte. Reid Vanhorn had been wounded in action on November 1st. No details were given but it is expected that further particulars will be received soon.
Pte. Vanhorn had been with the Calgary Highlanders and was fighting in Holland when his wounds were received. He had only been overseas since early in August.
Another brother Lyle was killed in action in August.

ROY VANHORN
Roy Vanhorn passed away December 28, 1998 at the Greater Niagara General Hospital. He was born March 29, 1911 in Gordon Township, Manitoulin Island, the son of Leon Foster and Annie Maud (Coutts) Vanhorn. Husband of the late Evelyn Wilson, father of Dawn (Alvin) Runnalls, Winchester, Lee (Wanda), Heather (Gerald) Geyer, and Cheryl, all of Niagara Falls. Brother of Norman (Scott), Abbotsford, B.C., and Lenna Kerr, Calgary; predeceased by sisters Jean and Evan, and brothers James, Gordon, and Edward. Grandfather of Rachel Leigh and Gretchen Runnals, Steven and Beth Geyer, Kerry and Melissa Vanhorn, and Jason Vanhorn, and great grandfather of Evelyn and Jessie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Roy rested at the Morse and Son Chapel of the Morgan Funeral Homes. A service under the auspices of the Oddfellows Lodge, #153, I.O.O.F. was held on the evening of December 30. Roy had just marked 50 years of membership in the Lodge. The funeral service, conducted by the Rev. Dr. John Stephenson was held at the Chapel on December 31, with interment at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, Fonthill. Although Roy left Manitoulin while still in his teens, his affection for it never diminished and he returned for enjoyable visits in his later years.

Suddenly at his residence June 30, 1982, Russell VanHorn, beloved husband of Marjorie Tamblyn, dear brother of Mrs. K. Winfield and Mrs. Jean Musselwhite, in his 76th year. Mr. VanHorn attended Mindemoya school and was employed for 40 years at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. He was also very active in the Oshawa Glad Society, and the Whitby Gladen Club.

Death of Mrs. Vanhorn
Mrs. Theresa Ann Vanhorn died at the residence of her son John in Allan Township, on April 5, 1915, aged 73 years. The funeral service was held at the Kagawong Church yesterday and was conducted by Rev. John A. McDonald.
The deceased came to the Manitoulin with her late husband and family, in 1880. Her husband predeceased her sixteen years ago.
She leaves eight sons to mourn her death, they are: John, Levi and Neil of Allan, Foster of Gordon, George and Luke of Kagawong, Peter at Gore Bay, and William in Tehkummah.

Obituary
Norman R. Vanhorne
The people of Burpee and Britainville were saddened a week ago by the sudden death of Mr. Norman R. VanHorne. He was ill for less than a week and it was only a day or so before his death that anything serious was apprehended. On Friday, alarming symptoms appeared and on Saturday, Feb. 12th, he passed away.
Deceased was a native of the Island. He was born at Spring Bay on Dec. 16, 1880. On Feb 15, 1905 he was married to Bertha Grace Head and settled near Britainville where he resided till March 1918. At that date he moved to Burpee where he has since resided.
In his religious belief he differed somewhat from what is generally recognized as orthodox Christianity but he was everywhere respected as a consistent worthy citizen, a kind and helpful neighbour, a gentleman in word and deed. He had filled the office of councilor in Burpee for a year and was still holding office at the time of his death.
The funeral took place on Monday Feb. 14, the place of interment being Long Bay cemetery. The service at the house and grave was conducted by Rev. R. Wiseman.
He is survived by both parents, four brothers and two sisters. He also leaves a widow and eight children. The heartfelt sympathy of the community goes out to the lonely ones in their heavy sorrow.

AGED WIFE IS CALLED
Great sorrow came to the home of Thomas Alfred Vanmeer early on Tuesday morning, Oct. 8th when his beloved life partner passed to her reward. The deceased had not been well for some months, but it was only on Thursday last that she was obliged to remain in her room.
Mrs. Vanmeer whose maiden name was Marthta (sic) Adair, was born in Osprey Tph. near Rob Roy, seventy-two years ago. She spent her girlhood there and was married in her old home. Forty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Vanmeer moved to the Poplar Sideroad, where they have since resided. Besides her husband, one son, James, mourns her death. One brother John Adair and one sister, Mrs. Boutell, are in the west. Another sister, Mrs. Houghton resides in town.
The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 10th at two o'clock and was conducted by Rev. H. O. Eastman of the Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Baptist cemetery.
Mrs. Vanmeer was very quiet home loving wife and mother and in her family circle and was deeply and sincerely loved and to them as to her friends her passing is the cause of great sorrow. To the bereaved the sympathy of the community is extended.-Collingwood Bulletin

FORMER RESIDENT PASSES AT SHELBY
Funeral services for Robt. Van Meer were held in the Methodist church here. Homer F. Cox officiated. Interment was made in the English cemetery at Coutts beside the grave of his son, Ernie, who died several years ago. The order of Elks of which the deceased was a member was in charge of the services at the cemetery.
The death of Mr. VanMeer shortly after midnight Sunday, came as a shock to hundreds of his friends in northern Montana and southern Alberta. He had returned only a few days before from Camas Hot Springs, where he had spent about three weeks taking treatments. He had not been in the best of health since late last fall when he suffered an attack of illness that kept him in the hospital for some time.
Apparently he had benefited by his trip to the springs and was again able to take up his duties as manager of the Selby Distributors. Sunday he visited at Sweet Grass and other points north and that evening remained in his office with other persons arranging business affairs until nearly 10 oclock. Shortly after he retired he passed away. Mrs. VanMeer was with him at the time.
The deceased was born Nov. 21, 1877, at Owen Sound, Ontario and came to Montana in 1910. He located on a farm about three miles south of Sweetgrass where he remained until about 1919 when he moved to the bordertown. In a few years Bob had made and spent a sizeable fortune. With the opening of the Kevin-Sunburst oil field he invested heavily in this venture and for a time it appeared that he would have his name listed with those of other millionaires.
It was largely through his efforts and capital that the famous Van Meer well was drilled between Kevin and Oilmont. As near as could be determined, this well came in as a 5,000-barrel gusher. It gushed for about two days and then flowed water.
Mr. VanMeer had been a resident of Shelby since 1932 being in charge of Shelby Distributors. A few months ago he had launched plans to start a pop factory in this city. He also operated a dairy adjoining the town of Coutts at the time of his death where he owned several hundred acres of land near the border oil field. At one time he operated the Coutts beer parlor. Bob VanMeer was widely known for his many acts of charity which extended over a wide scope of territory which included former employees, farmers and stockmen hit by hard times and others whom he thought were in distress. He will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Jack Stafford of Lethbridge, Alta., and June of this city; a son, Marvin of Shelby, and two brothers, Alford of Sedewick, Alta., and Jacob of Gore Bay, Ont. Pallbearers were, Cecil Alsup, John Mars, Dr. W.T. Patton, Tom Black, Daniel Griffith and Zeno Poppenwell.

ISLA ETHEL (NEE BOCK) VANSTONE
The family announces with great sorrow Isla�s passing at age 78 years on August 5, 2011 at Extendicare York. Beloved wife of Carl Vanstone for over 50 years. Daughter of Melvin and Winifred Bock, both predeceased. Loving mother of Stephen (wife Nancy Mills) of Hillsburgh, Judith of Markham, and Susan of Toronto. Proud grandmother of Liam and Reid Vanstone, and Sarah, Geoffrey, and Jenna Irvine. Cherished sister of Elgin Bock (Anne) of Kingston, and aunt to Kerry, Jennifer, and Dean Bock. A proud �Haweater,� Isla was born and raised in Little Current on Manitoulin Island, and trained as a Registered Nurse at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She began her nursing career on Manitoulin at the Little Current Hospital before moving to Sudbury to work at the Memorial Hospital, becoming head nurse of pediatrics until retiring from the profession to raise three children. Isla was a dedicated, long-term member of St. Peter�s United Church, involved with the United Church Women, Church Council, and innumerable committees and events over the years. At a ceremony in March 2010, she cut the opening ribbon for the church�s accessibility elevator. The family deeply thanks the St. Peter�s community for their kindness and support for Isla. Throughout her life, Isla was active with gardening and needlework, and for a number of years, she volunteered with The Arthritis Society, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Sudbury Regional Cancer Treatment Centre. Despite significant chronic health challenges, Isla�s strength of will and perseverance in difficult times inspired all who knew her. She never complained and was always grateful for the gifts in her life. Her legacy of quiet strength and kindness will never be forgotten. The family would like to thank the staff of Extendicare York�s third floor for their care and compassion for Isla over the past four years. VANZANT Clive 1909 1917
A very sad drowning accident took place up by the Red Mill on Saturday afternoon, by which Clive Vanzant only child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm Vanzant, of town, lost his life. It would seem tha t he was up at the boom and was floating a log and fell off into the water. There was only one little boy near him, but he could not get out to him as the water was too deep. So after trying, he ran back and told his mother, but it was too late. He had been one hour or more in the water. Dr. Flood was called and did all he could but could not bring life back. Clive was eight years and seven months old and was a great favorite with those who knew him. The funeral took place on Monday at 2 oclock at the home of Mr. H. Vanzant, thence to Mountain View Cemetery.

Clyde was born in Manitowaning, son of the late Jack and Mary (MacDonald) Van Zant. He worked as a miner with Inco and in Elliot Lake as well as farming for many years. Clyde also owned and operated Van's Drive Inn Restaurant in Manitowaning for 14 years. Clyde was involved in the community softball and hardball leagues, Manitowaning Curling Club and Manitowaning Board of Trade for 15 years. His favourite pastime was hunting and fishing with family and friends.
Beloved husband of Karen (Bayer) Van Zant of Manitowaning. Dear father of Denise Moggy (husband Gene) of Manitowaning, Shelly Bond (husband Peter) of Petawawa. Dear grandfather of Christopher Bond, Alex and Nicole Moggy. Survived by two brothers, Burk (wife Harriet) and Royce both of Manitowaning. Predeceased by two sisters, Nedra Martin and Bona Lang as well as two brothers Loyal and Glyn Van Zant. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held in the Manitowaning Chapel on Thursday, July 5 with Pastor Wally Wood officiating. At Clyde's request there will be no visitation. Memorial donations to the charity of your choice can be arranged for at the funeral home.

MRS. W. VANZANT LAID TO REST
The funeral of Mrs. W. Vanzant took place from the United Church last Thursday, December 7th.
A short service was held at the residence of the late Mrs. Vanzant before the church services. Rev. E. Shaw officiated at both services. The church was filled to capacity by the many friends of Mrs. Vanzant, who paid their last respects to a cheerful and willing worker in the church and community affairs.
A duet "The Old Rugged Cross" was rendered by Mrs. E. Shaw and Miss Dorothy Boyter.
The pallbearers were: Roy Armstrong, W. Miller, M. Bock, E. Feguson, Jack Allen and Fred Rheaume. Interment took place at Mountain View cemetery.

WENDELL BOYNE VANZANT
Wendell Boyne VanZant of Manitowaning passed away suddenly as the result of a car accident, a head-on collision, two miles south of Manitowaning, on the 28th day of March, 1970, at the age of 20 years.
Wendell, the son of Burkley and Harriet VanZant, was born at the Mindemoya Red Cross Hospital and lived all his life in Manitowaning. He attended the Assiginack Central School, the Little Current Secondary School and the Manitoulin Secondary School.
He was very active during his years in school. He was a member of the Students Council in Little Current High School, he competed in track events and played on the Manitowaning Senior Hockey Team. He was a member of the United Church.
On Saturdays and during the summer he was employed by Mastins Store and last summer he worked at International Nickle and the quarry until the strike.
He is survived by his parents and sister, Mary Lou, age 13 and brother, Blaine, age 14, all of whom reside at Manitowaning.
The funeral was held April 1, at 2:30 in the afternoon at the Manitowaning Arena. Officiating at the services were the Reverend John MacDonald, Dr. Laverty of the Kingston United Church, and the Reverend Murray Arnill, Chapleau. Organist was Mr. Smith. The twenty-third Psalm was sung and both the Manitowaning and Wikwemikong choirs sang the hymn, the Battle of the Republic.
Pallbearers were Rennie Mastin, Beverly Maguire, Grenville Phillips, Del Thompson, Bill Tilston, David Pellow, Grant Moggy and Wayne Chapman. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Hughson and Lynn Hughson.
Flower bearers were the members of the hockey team, coach Ralph Moggy, managers James Lockyer and Bill Moggy, Bill Trimmer, Blaine Moggy, Dallas Moggy, Larry Moggy, Bruce Moggy, Hugh Moggy, George Pennie, Wayne Pennie, Ron Morris, Wilfred Holmes, Wayne Smith, Bill Noon and George Hudson. Ushers were friends and neighbours.
Relatives who attended from a distance were Capt. And Mrs. Wm. Morton; Mr. and Mrs. Rolly Kyvehaven, St. Catharines; Mr. and Mrs. Glyn VanZant and family and Bill Morton Jr. from Owen Sound; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Long and family from Orangeville; Mrs. Jean Wilson, Phoebe Wilson and Sharon Peters from Guelph; Keith Wilson, New Market; Mr. and Mrs. Norman Morrow and family, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Phillips, Mrs. . Will be missed by in laws Wayne and Rena Collins of Little Current, David and wife Sharon Taylor of Little Current, Bill and Linda Taylor of Spring Bay, Allen and Cheryl Taylor of Evansville, Jim Taylor and friend Mary of Gordon Township, Kevin Taylor and friend Debbie of Little Current, Angel and Mark Campbell of Evansville, Willard Taylor of Copper Cliff. Memories will be kept alive by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was 7 - 9 pm Friday. Funeral Service was at 2 pm Saturday, November 5, 2005. Rev. Beth Topps officiating, at Island Funeral Home. Donations to the Arthritis Society would be appreciated.
