DEATH OF MRS. S. PAISLEY
In the death of Mrs. Samuel Paisley which occurred at her late home in Long Bay, Western Manitoulin lost an old and highly respected lady.
The late Mrs. Paisley, whose maiden name was Eliza Barr, was born on June 3rd, 1844 on a boat crossing the ocean from Ireland. Her parents settled near Brockville, Ontario, moving twelve years later to Toronto and later to Aurora until her marriage to Mr. Samuel Paisley in 1863 and after a period she with her husband moved to Whitechurch, York County and later to Long Bay, Manitoulin Island where she remained until her demise which took place on Friday, Feb. 4th of the present year.
Deceased was a most estimable woman, kindly in disposition, generous and extremely warm-hearted, ever showing a sympathetic spirit to those in need, a faithful wife and loving mother. In religion she was a Mennonite and a member of Christian Church. Had she been spared until Jan. 28th she would have celebrated her diamond wedding.
Mrs. Paisley's illness was brief and consequently suffered little or no pain, as might otherwise have happened had she experienced a lingering illness.
Those of her family who survive to mourn her loss are Mrs. M. Bassford of Toronto, Mrs. P. A. Duff of South River, Miss Ella at home, Herbert of Vancouver, Fred of Sandfield and Frank of Long Bay. Fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
Interment took place at long Bay cemetery on Sunday, Feb. 6th and the service was conducted by Rev. L. R. Pipher.
Many beautiful floral tributes were in evidence and attested to the love and esteem in which the deceased lady was held by a host of sorrowing friends.
Mr. Paisley and family have the deep sympathy of the whole community in which they are so well and widely known in their hour of gloom and sorrow.
The Recorder, Gore Bay, February 24, 1927

LIEUTENANT KEITH PATTERSON
On November 26, 2001 Keith Patterson, a life long resident of Little Current and a decorated veteran of the Second World War, passed away at the age of 81 years.
In early May 1941, Mr. Keith Patterson left his job at The Expositor and went to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He signed up on Monday the 5th at North Bay and before the day was over he was on his way to Brandon, Manitoba. He described his train trip to the Manitoba city as "...living on George," (a reference to the King, George VI) with "...eating in the dining car and having great service and good food."
His stay in Brandon was brief and on the 24th of May he found himself at an R.C.A.F. depot in Vancouver called Jericho Beach. He was posted to a detachment in U.B.C. taking such ground training as "...peeling potatoes." Keith wanted to be a pilot but lacked the academic background. He nevertheless applied for air crew and was posted to Lethbridge, Alberta in the summer of 1942. There he attended bombing and gunnery school, taking instruction both on the ground and in the air.
Training was completed by the autumn of 1942. After an eventful embarkation leave at home, Keith left for Britain with about 20,000 other troops on the converted liner, Queen Elizabeth. More training followed in England and Keith was posted to an "operational training unit." His neophyte crew were initiated into the air war in the spring of 1943 in what he characterized as a "nickel mission" involving the dropping of propaganda leaflets over Limoges in occupied France. At that time Keith was a gunner in the five-member crew of a twin engine Wellington bomber, affectionately known as a "Wimpy." They were bases at Skipton on Swale in Yorkshire, England.
While flying in Wellingtons the crew bombed the German industrial heartland of the Ruhr Valley as well as laying mines and doing other tasks. Keith recalled facing heavy flak not to mention fire from JU-88 night fighters and other Luftwaffe aircraft on those dangerous missions.
It was during his time in Wellingtons that Keith won the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor. Although he maintained that it was for generally diligent service, the event that led to the award occurred in the summer of 1943.
His Wellington had lost an engine to enemy fire but managed to make it back to England. Unfortunately an enemy aircraft was also in the vicinity and the airfield they sought to land on could not use its lights. They were near the coast so the pilot decided the "...softest thing was the ocean..." and ditched the bomber in the North Sea near Cromer in Norfolk.
One of the crew was fearful of water and could not swim. Keith was instrumental in saving him from drowning until a rescue launch arrived. The whole crew escaped unharmed. That incident was the most serious damage Keith experienced in any aircraft. He was never wounded either; despite occupying the hazardous post of tail gunner.
After a dozen or so missions in Wellingtons, Keith flew on a four engine Lancaster bomber for a brief stint until he joined a new squadron of four engine Halifaxers around Christmas 1943. On those heavy bombers they were able to not only bomb the Ruhr but also Berlin and beyond if necessary.
Except for some daylight raids on German "buzz bomb" sites in 1944, Keith's aircraft, like others in the Canadian and British Air Forces, flew night missions. Keith completed a tour of 30 missions in the fall of 1944. By volunteering to serve in the Pacific Theatre, he was repatriatated to Canada on the Mauritania and spent Christmas of that year back home.
Instead of going to the Far East, Keith spent the remainder of the war doing administrative work in communication flights out of Trenton, Ontario. That program involved flying V.I.P.'s to various Canadian destinations in RCAF aircraft.
Keith received his discharge from the Air Force in the summer of 1945. He had risen through the ranks and by the time of discharge was a commissioned officer having attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He was frequently the highest ranking officer in his crew but, as he used to say, every man knew his job and the pilot was skipper and his decision was final regarding the flight of the aircraft. At war's end, Keith returned briefly to the printing trade at the Sudbury Star where he was employed as a compositor until 1950 when he was named the first manager of the then-new Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) store in Little Current.
He held this position until his retirement.
Keith was predeceased by his beloved wife Molly. He was the loving father of Sharon and husband Jack Ferguson of Green Bay and dear grandfather of Hugh and wife Heidi of Palgrave and Megan and husband Blaine Tessier of Val Therese and the great grandfather of Courtney and Connor Ferguson, Randy, Myles and Rene Tessier. He was predeceased by his only sister, June Sloss. Funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2001 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Little Current, Ontario. Father Foliot officiated. Burial was at St. Bernard's Cemetery.
