Obituary
MRS. ELIZABETH NELSON - Death is common to all, but frequently unexpectedly. This community was shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of sister Elizabeth Nelson. She would have been ninety-eight years of age on this coming tenth of January. She was the oldest member of the Church of Christ here and the oldest resident in Ice Lake. Death came quietly at 2 a.m., Saturday, November 21st, after three days hospitalization at Little Current for a minor scald on one leg.
Enjoying unusual health and activity for one of her many years, she was a marvel to all who knew her. Only this last summer she attended each evening service of our gospel meetings as well as some Women's Bible classes, conducted each afternoon by Sister Moore. Twice each Lord's days he attended service. She wanted to be busy and was active in household and outdoor duties to the last. Only two years ago she said "I would still milk cows, but the folks won't let me anymore. Indeed only since she scalded her leg, she wanted to go to the barn to help with the cows.
Sister Nelson was born Elizabeth Wilson of Thornbury, Ontario, and came to Manitoulin Island with her parents at the age of seventeen. She was married to John Nelson and to this union ten children were born. She was predeceased by her husband fifty-five years ago at the age of 52. A daughter Lydia at 13 years old; (Mina) Mrs. Chas. Hore, aged 21; (Martha), Mrs. Wm. Hore, age 36; James in 1927; Charlotte in1946.
Left to mourn are: (Rachel), Mrs. Wm. Wright, Robert and Joseph of Ice Lake; (Sarah), Mrs. John Donaldson of Gordon and William of Sudbury. There are sixteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and twelve great, great grandchildren. Also left to mourn is one brother, Ambrose of Maine, Alberta. Predeceased are six brothers: John, Joseph, William, Thomas, Truman and Abraham. Three sisters, Charlotte, (Mrs. Ed. Noland); Mina, (Mrs. Walter Wright) and Rachel, (Mrs.Wm.Nealy).
Sister Nelson obeyed the gospel in 1919, and has been loyal to her Lord without variance since that time. Her legacy is rich in memories and example for those who remain yet a little while.
Funeral services were conducted from the meeting house of the Church of Christ at Ice Lake by James O'Neal assisted by Lloyd Bailey of Thessalon."

Lieutenant Lorne Weller Nicholson
Lieut. Lorne Weller Nicholson only son and child of Geo. B. Nicholson, M. P. East Algoma and Mrs. Nicholson, Chapleau, Ontario killed in action Nov. 4th, 1918
Lieut Nicholson went overseas with the 227 Battalion, Men-of-the-North, Lt.-Col C.H.L. Jones, of Sault Ste Marie, Commanding officer. He was transferred to the 4th C.M.R.s and went to France in 1917. He was wounded with shrapnel in January of this year but recovered quickly, not laving his battalion. He was wounded again in April and was in the Canadian Hospital in France when it was bombed and more than three hundred lives of doctors, nurses, and wounded soldiers were lost. He was transferred to the Prince of Wales hospital in London, where, after three and one-half months, he fully recover, returning to his battalion on September 29th being in the lines continually from that time until the fatal day, just one week before the signing of the Armistice which means the Worlds peace.
Lieut Nicholson was just past twenty-three years of age, a splendid specimen of young manhood. In one of his last letters to his mother, he used these words: Mother, as we pass through these released towns and villages and look into the faces of the people who have withstood four years of barbarism, we realize that after all what we are doing is worth while. This was written just 12 days before he gave his all (with the thousands of others of Canadas best) that we might be permitted to hail the glorious dawn of the Worlds peace.
