Obituary
John Lane Island's premiere politician passes at age 85

by Michael Erskine
GORE BAY---A man may often be measured by the impact of his legacy upon those around him. If that is so, then the Island has witnessed the passing of a giant last week with the death of John Gordon Lane, farmer, insurance agent and for the past 50 years the dominant political figure on Manitoulin Island. He was 85 years old.. Mr. Gordon was born on Barrie Island on August 5, 1916, the son of the late George and Martha (Vancise) Lane. He finished his formal schooling there at age 14, after which he worked on a number of local farms and bush lots until he bought his own farm in 1939 and in 1946, Mr. Lane married Louise Smith of St. Catherines and began raising his family. Mr. Lane began his political career as a council member on Barrie Island in 1941, serving in that capacity until 1960, at which time he moved to Gore Bay, where he served as a councillor for four years and then as mayor for five years. He began working for the Co-Operator's Insurance in 1955, attaining the position as district manager in 1969. In 1971, Mr. Lane was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Manitoulin and served in that position until he retired in 1986. In his political career Mr. Lane won an impressive 34 elections and served 45 years as a dedicated politician at all levels. "I was very sad to learn of John Lane's passing," said the Honorable William Davis, who was Ontario Premier and a Progressive Conservative colleague through most of Mr. Lane's career. "Mr. Lane was a contributing member of caucus, to government, and was always a very active member in representing the interests of his constituents and an excellent member of the Legislature." Mr. Lane was a founding member of the Manitoulin Livestock Co-Operative and served on the first board of directors for the organization. His determination was credited with preserving the Co-op through some of its darkest days. He also acted as chairman organizing the Farm Forums of the 1950s. The roads of Manitoulin Island, often commented on as being remarkable for a rural area, were one of Mr. Lane's longstanding projects. "John did so much for his constituency, " said Grant Oakes, a long time collaborator of Mr. Lane. "Roads were always John's priority and he was a very, very, hard worker. I have nothing but praise for him and I am shocked and saddened by his passing." The successful upgrading of the ferry service to Manitoulin from Tobermory, with the purchase and inauguration of the Chi-Cheemaun was another project that owed much of its success to the hard work of Mr. Lane, according to Billings Reeve and contemporary Aus Hunt. "He was a dedicated member and his whole thoughts were on his constituents," said Mr. Hunt. "He was honoured at the 25th anniversary of the Chi-Cheemaun in 1999 with a plaque bearing our names. He was a very civic-minded person." Federal contemporary, Dr. Maurice Foster, who served as MP for Algoma Manitoulin through much of Mr. Lane's career, remembered working with him on a wide range of projects. Although he was from a different political party, their joint concern in furthering the best interests of their constituents often made them allies. "It was really a pleasure to work with him over the 16 or 17 years that we were both in office," said Dr. Foster. "He was one of the most knowledgeable men I have ever met, and he was certainly a very dedicated member of Parliament." "I especially remember the success we had in weathering the 1982 recession. A lot of people were out of work in the area, and we were able to secure a lot of funding through Canada Works for projects in the area. It was reported in the Expositor that Canada Works was the largest employer in the area," laughed Dr. Foster. "I am very saddened to learn of his passing, he was an exceptional man." Mike Brown, current MPP for Algoma Manitoulin spoke of Mr. Lane in glowing terms as well. "I have known John for nearly 30 years; he always put his constituents first. If you gave John a call, he was always willing to help out, and he was much admired for that," he said. "He was a moderate and pragmatist, always trying to find solutions to problems, which I think is the highest tribute you can give a politician." Mr. Brown added the work Mr. Lane did in helping to build the Gore Bay Curling Rink, Golf Course and the modernization of area's sewer and water system to the vast list of his accomplishments. Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Mayor Ken Ferguson expressed shock at Mr. Lane's passing, saying "John was an inspiration to me, a source of great encouragement. He was a great statesman for our area. He always spoke his mind and did what he said he was going to do. He facilitated, helping us in many ways, whether agriculture or health and my sympathies go to his family." "He was a good man and a good friend," said Leo Foucault, a long-time mayor of Espanola. Mr. Foucault confirmed that Mr. Lane was in large part the founder of the modern day Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. Mr. Lane put in countless hours of diplomacy and carried on negotiations across the North to promote the creation of a separate ministry to promote northern development. Never one to take no for an answer on a matter he considered of great importance to the North, Mr. Lane persisted in his efforts after initially being rebuffed, until he was finally rewarded with success. His political life was just one aspect of Mr. Lane's contribution to his community. He served as a Rotary Club member for 35 years and was a life-long member of the Lyons Memorial United Church, serving on a number of committees through the years. Along with Renie Noble, he was instrumental in founding the Flower of Hope School, which he himself identified as his most rewarding effort. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and was known as "The Commander" by his hunting camp companions. Mr. Lane's first wife passed away in 1969 after a battle with cancer, and Mr. Lane was later remarried to Leila McDougall, who survives him. Mr. Lane is also survived by his daughter Sharon, his son Ron Lane, wife Greta of Gore Bay, stepchildren Linda and her husband Max Trick, Craig McDougall, wife Lillian and Bob McDougall. Mr. Lane was the proud grandfather of Drew, Nicholas, and Lindsey Lane and Neil, Laura and Sheri McDougall and Aaron and Brent Trick. He was the dear brother of Lloyd and Evelyn Lane of Barrie Island, and Larry and Margaret Lane of Gore Bay. He was predeceased by grandchildren Amanda and D'Arcy and sisters Mary Wilson, Agnes Morgan and brother Harold. Mr. Lane's funeral service was held at 2 pm, at Lyons Memorial Church on Sunday, August 12, with Geraldine Bould officiating. He is interned in Gordon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Lyons Memorial United Church or to the Rotary Club.

Infant Burned to Death Near Providence Bay
A tragedy occurred at the Kay Settlement a few miles from Providence Bay on Thursday afternoon about five oclock when the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Langman was destroyed by fire, their four month old baby perishing in the flames. The building was of frame construction and the fire swept through it with such rapidity that everything was completely wiped out. At the time of the fire Mrs. Langman had run over to a neighbors for a few minutes leaving the baby in the house with the other children. Mr. Langman was in Providence Bay on business at the time and this left the small children unable to do anything towards saving the wee tot or anything of value. The calamity leaves the family in dire circumstances as all they possess is the clothing they were wearing.
Mr. Langmans mother, Mrs. M. Langman, a brother Clifford, a sister, Mrs. Wm. Atkinson, reside in Gore Bay and to them and the other members of the family we extend our sincere sympathy.

Sudden Death of Young Man
On Wednesday, February 2nd, Cecil Langman, second son of Mrs. Gertrude Langman of Gore Bay and the late Thomas Langman, and beloved husband of Grace Campbell Langman of Providence Bay passed away in the Manitoulin Red Cross Hospital, Mindemoya, from peritonitis.
Mr. Langman who had been in poor health for the past few years was taken ill shortly after the death of his infant son, who was burned to death in a fire of unknown origin which destroyed the home and contents on January 20th.
Mr. Langman was born in Parry Sound 34 years ago and came to the Island with his parents, sisters, and brothers at the age of two years, the former settling at Meldrum Bay. In 1915 his father died and later the family moved to Gore Bay.
Nine years ago Cecil went to Providence Bay to work for Mr. John Purvis. Here he met and married Miss Grace Campbell. For a year or so they resided at the dock then moved to the Kay Settlement where the tragedy took place that deprived them of their infant son and home, the shock of this no doubt hastened Mr. Langmans death.

Obituary
DOUG LANKTREE WAS A PILLAR OF THE MINDEMOYA COMMUNITY
MINDEMOYA Central Manitoulin lost a key member of the community when Doug Lanktree passed away on Sunday, October 5 at his home in Mindemoya.
Mr. Lanktree was born on a farm near Providence Bay in 1928, the youngest of seven children. He spent time working in Levack as a policeman, then in North Bay, Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake as a teacher, before returning to the Island later in life to spend 40 years in the Mindemoya community.
His unexpected passing leaves a large void in many community organizations in which he was the head or an active member.
Doug was a lifelong member and founder of the Central Manitoulin Lions Club, president of the Historical Society, and active in the running of the Pioneer Museum. He was also a member of the Manitoulin Planning Board and the seniors club spearheading the drive for a seniors apartment complex in Mindemoya and until recently was a regular driver for Meals on Wheels. He was a former councillor for the township and served as principal of the Central Manitoulin Public School for 23 years.
Mr. Lanktree received many awards over the years for his community work, including the Central Manitoulin Lions Club Citizen of the Year honour in 1997.
Doug was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed these pastimes with his family. He was an active member of the United Church. Doug was a voracious reader and local historian, and did extensive genealogical research on the Lanktree and Kay families. He loved Manitoulin and had many stories to share of life growing up on the Island.
Favourite activities included golfing, curling, gardening and travelling with a trailer to locales such as Sauble Lake. After retirement, he and his wife Shirley enjoyed regular trips to Florida as well as visits to Cuba, Portugal and England. He also enjoyed two special celebrations this year his 80th birthday in April and a family reunion at his home in July to mark 55 years of marriage with Shirley.
Mr. Lanktree was known as a humble and kind-hearted, but no-nonsense, community-minded family man. Besides his beloved wife, he leaves behind two sons, Robert (wife Shelley) and John (wife Lois-Ann), seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Doug will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Wesley Latham formerly of Providence Bay, who made the supreme sacrifice on August 26th
A Providence Bay Hero
Another of those who formerly lived in Providence Bay has been called to make the supreme sacrifice on Flanders fields. Mr. Latham for a number of years was a resident of Providence Bay. The family removed from here to Owen Sound about nine years ago, Wesley and other members of the family having removed previously. He having been for several years a resident of Owen Sound and he enlisted in the 147th battalion went overseas in 1916 and was sent to France in 1917.
While in France he contracted trench fever last October and was sent to England where he remained under treatment until last May.
He was born in Owen Sound and was thirty-two years of age. Before enlisting he had been for eleven years employed as a marble cutter by Mr. B. A. Williscroft. He was an earnest worker in connection with the Salvation Army which body will miss him very much.
He leaves a wife and three small children have removed from Owen Sound to Providence Bay. Mr. Latham was a brother of Mrs. Thos. Ellis of this village. Besides his wife and children, an aged mother, three brothers and two sisters survive. One brother, Russell is in France doing his bit. To these our sympathy reaches out.
Doing well his soldiers parts.
Quick of limb and brave of heart
He triumphed in a glorious fight
Strongly battle for the Right.

Obituary
Miss Bertha Latta
On Saturday, January 28th, the shadow of death fell upon the home of Mr. Thomas Latta, when his daughter, Bertha, passed on into the higher life .For about six years she had been a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble, which frequently caused her much distress, yet she bore it all with fine Christian fortitude.
Bertha was born on Barrie Island twenty-five years ago, where she attended school and took a lively interest in the better things of community life. The Church and Sabbath School will miss her for she was a consistent member of both.
Death is not a strange experience to this home for about fifteen years ago the mother, Mrs. Mary Latta, died and later, brother Will, who had served overseas, died in Toronto three years ago. In the passing of Miss Latta the father brothers and sisters have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral service was held at the father's residence which is situated at the entrance to Barrie Island.
Owing to the absence of Rev. H.C. Feast, the pastor who w as taking the work on the Providence Bay field, Mr. Dunbar conducted the service. Those who are left to mourn are the father, Mr. Latta; three sisters, Mrs. Shepley of Kingsville, Miss Margaret of Owen Sound and Miss Florence at home; and three brothers, Robert, Gilbert, and George at home.

Pte W. T. Latta
Another of our Barrie Island boys has made the supreme sacrifice since the suspension of hostilities. Not on the battlefield not even in France but still as much a victim of the war as if he had met his death in the trenches. The disease from which he succumbed was due to the exposure and hardships endured by him while lumbering in England.
Pte. W. T. Latta was born at Barrie Island on Sept. 14th 1898. He went overseas in the summer of 1916 in the 238 Foresters Battalion. While in England he offered to serve in the infantry but his efficiencies in the lumbering industry made his services most acceptable there. He laboured in a sawmill and also in forestry work at Virgina Waters, surrey England. While engaged in the last named part of the work, exposed t continual wet, sleeping at night in his wet garments in a camp without a fire he developed tuberculosis which compelled him ultimately to go on the sick list and he was sent to the hospital on July 4th of the present year. He was returned to Canada as a couch patient on Oct 29th and placed in Spadina Military hospital where he remained until he finally passed away on Dec. 11.
Pte. Latta was highly esteemed by all who knew him and his death is sincerely mourned by a wide circle of sympathetic friends. His father, three of his sisters and many of their friends visited him while in the hospital. He possessed the spirit of undaunted courage that has been so marked in all our Canadian boys. He had a cheerful word and a sunny smile for all who called on him to the very last. His remains were brought back to his home on Barrie Island and he was interred in Gordon cemetery on Dec. 14th. A memorial service was held at Barrie Island Church on Dec. 22nd in which the pastor, Rev. R. Wiseman made a feeling reference to him and all the boys of the community who like him had been faithful unto death. They leave behind them the memory of work performed faithfully, of hardships borne uncomplainingly and a cheerful resignation that could not be daunted even in the face of the last enemy. Heaven grant them sweet rest.

Words from my brother by David Jr. Lavallee
My dearest family and friends,
Please don't be sad and don't worry
I'm in a better place now.
The life I had with you all was great!
Don't worry I'm not gone,
This is not goodbye, it's only farewell
For we will meet again.
I will always be there when you need someone to talk to.
I'll be that one star in the night sky that twinkles.
I'll be the one eagle flying in the day sky looking over you.
I'll be whispering to you saying "It's ok" in the wind.
I'll always be there in that one spot in your hearts.
I love all of you;
Please don't cry.
Love Curtis.
