Passing of Mrs. John Jackson
The death of Mrs. John Jackson, of Vancouver, B.C., which occurred on January 25th, of which mention was made in the last issue of The Recorder, removes from the community a lady who was well and favorably known in Gore Bay.

Death of E.C. Jackson
In the death of Edward Coatsworth Jackson which occurred at Tamworth, Ontario, on Thursday, April 21st, Gore Bay lost one of its most esteemed and respected citizens.
The deceased sustained a breakdown in health about two years ago and an operation was found necessary from which he partially recovered. It was discovered at the time that the affliction was of a very serious nature and ultimate recovery impossible. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson retired to the town of Tamworth last autumn where resides their daughter, Mrs. W. V. Crich, and during the following winter Mr. Jackson steadily became weaker until death relieved him of his suffering.
Mr. Jackson carried on a successful hardware business in town for several years under the name of Jackson & Company and on account of illness, was forced to retire from public life after which the business was conducted by his brother, Will Jackson, and later by his son, Leonard.
Although it was fully understood that Mr. Jackson could not recover, yet the news of his death came as a great shock to his many friends and relatives living here and elsewhere. The remains arrived in Gore Bay on Sunday evening and interment took place on Monday, April 25th.
The late Mr. Jackson was a man highly respected and his good nature and even temperament were often the subject of admiration and favorable comment. Ever ready to assist others in distress and a heart full of sympathy for all in trouble, the deceased won a place in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, a good sport and public-spirited man, will render the vacant place in the community, a difficult one to fill.
Deceased was born at Bruce Mines in 1866 where he lived until the age of 9 years when he moved with his parents to Gore Bay, where he spent the remainder of his life engaged in mercantile pursuits.
Mr. Jackson was an active member of Gore Bay Lodge A.F. &A.M. No 472 in which body he proved a valued and useful worker and ever strived to maintain those principles and virtues, laid down for the guidance of all brethren, in a truly Masonic spirit.
The late Mr. Jackson was united in marriage in 1890 to Sarah Grace Needham, of Gore Bay, who survives him also two children, Mrs. W.V. Crich, of Tamworth, Ont., and Leonard of Gore Bay. Other survivors are his sisters, Mrs. R. J. Hawkey and Mrs. Charles Rowe of Alberta, Mrs. W.A .Smith and Mrs. John Purvis of Gore Bay, and brothers Josh and Samuel of Vancouver, B.C. and William of Gore Bay.
The funeral took place on Monday from the United Church, and was in charge of the Masonic Brethren of Gore Bay. Rev. Walter Cannon in his discourse delivered a very inspiring sermon fitting the occasion perfectly, in which he paid many tributes in keeping with the virtues of the departed brother and also extended a message of hope and one that must have acted as balm to the hearts of the sorrowing wife, relatives and family.
Many floral tributes were in evidence thus attesting to the high esteem in which the deceased was held among them being sent from the following; Gore Bay Masonic Lodge, Ladies Aid of the United Church, R. Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Smith, Mr. Tom Porter, Miss McArthur, Mrs. McIntosh, Mrs. Bassford, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. John Purvis, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smith, and Mrs. Hamilton.
The bereaved wife and family have the deep sympathy of the community as a whole.

The Late Robert Jaffray
Postmaster Dies Suddenly At Gore Bay
It is hard to realize that one of our most highly respected citizens has been called to fill a higher place. With us every day in the week with his cheerful greeting and friendly smile it is hard for us to realize Bob Jaffray has left us. His sudden departure came as a great shock to his hundreds of friends throughout the Manitoulin Island. While for some months past he had not been enjoying good health, for a time being a patient in Christie St. Hospital, Toronto and at the Red Cross Hospital at Mindemoya, no one thought that heart trouble would cause his passing. Around town Friday morning after the departure of the first mail bus he made several calls among his friends, returned to the office and was in the act of carrying on his duties when he was suddenly seized with a heart attack and expired almost instantly.

Mrs. Isaac Johnson
Death came to Mrs. Isaac Johnson of Gore Bay on Thursday afternoon, March 23 after an illness of over four months. Up to that time she was in good health, celebrating on November 15, just two days before she went to bed, her fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Johnson, whose maiden name was Jane Hall, was born in Caladon in 1854 and was married to Mr. Isaac Johnson in 1871. They moved to Manitoulin in 1888 and have made their home in Gore Bay ever since.
The funeral service took place in the United Church on Saturday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. A. R. Gibson. He preached an impressive sermon from the following Her children shall rise up and call her blessed, emphasizing the good work of Mrs. Johnson during her life. One of the hymns, What A Friend We Have In Jesus was one which, while her sons were overseas, she sang frequently during her household duties.
The members of the family who were not present at the anniversary celebration in November have since visited their mother during her illness and because of the long distance which separated them they were unable to be present for the funeral. Besides her husband five sons and five daughters survive, Ishmael, Mrs. McIntosh, Alf, William and Myrtle at home; Mrs. Armstrong and Jim of Saskatoon; Mrs. White of Detroit and Ike of Regina.
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing family in this hour of bereavement.

ADA GRANT JOHNSTON
January 12, 1919 September 5, 2011
In loving memory of Ada Johnston who was born near Meldrum Bay, January 12, 1919 and who passed away September 5, 2011 at Orillia, Ontario. Ada loved to reminisce about her early childhood at the lighthouse on Manitoulin Island where her father had been the keeper. It was a place she loved and tried to return to at least once a year. It was Manitoulin Island where she met her beloved partner, Laurence Johnston. Many of you will remember him since he taught school on Cockburn and Manitoulin islands. Adas father, Albert Grant, was one of the first Witnesses of Jehovah on the Island. He taught Ada many of the truths of the Bible including the precious hope of living forever in a paradise earth. Due to this knowledge, when we speak of Ada in the future, she would want to be remembered firstly as a Witness of Jehovah before anything else. It is what made her the fine, faithful person she was in all aspects of her life. She shared this precious truth and the prospect of future life in a paradise right here on earth with her dear partner, Laurence as well as their two sons Marc and Pim. Laurence, too showed them a fine example of faithfulness until his death in 1969. During the war years and subsequent ban on the work of Jehovahs Witnesses, Laurence was arrested and jailed for his neutral stand. Ada was determined to stay loyal and continue in the important preaching work. Sometime after the war, in 1955, Ada and Laurence moved to Parry Sound, Ontario. There was a need for Kingdom proclaimers there. After Laurences death in 1969, Ada moved to Sudbury, Ontario, later to northern Manitoba and on to Vancouver Island, BC, before returning to Ontario to live in Orillia. Ada had engaged in the preaching work the morning of the day the massive stroke robbed her of her life. Through her faithful record of serving Jehovah, Ada touched many lives, as people have expressed to us since her death. She encouraged many who may have given up, and convinced others to begin, not just to learn about Jehovah but to appreciate and love Him as she did. Jehovah knows of the private tears we shed for our loss. Ada, however, would want us to remember to lean on Jehovah as she did. She would want us to show our faithfulness in action, and greet both her and Laurence in Jehovahs New Order under His son Christ Jesus. And so, friends, that is just what this family will endeavour to do. Thanking all of you for your kindness and thoughts at this time, Marc and Marlene, Sarah and Tim, Josh and Samantha, Pim and Tanus, Summer, Schon.

JAMES CHARLES JOYCE
November 23, 1953 October 28, 2011
In loving memory of James Joyce, a resident of Meldrum Bay, who died at his home on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the age of 57 years. He was the son of the late Wilfrid and Marguerite (Muir) Joyce. Jim lived his life on the family farm in Meldrum Bay. It was on the farm he developed a multitude of skills. At seventeen, he designed and built the farms operation centre, the machine shop. He was happiest when he was building. Projects large and small continued throughout his life as he was never idle. He believed any project worth doing was worth doing well. Over the years he expanded the family farm to include most farms in Meldrum Bay while raising a herd of Black Angus cattle. He enjoyed competitive sports and was a talented softball player. His reputation as a fastball/beanball pitcher and home run hitter were well earned. A true sportsman, he took pleasure from participating, the outcome was secondary. Jim fought a four-year battle with cancer. He fought the good fight until it was clear he was outmatched. He accepted his fate with grace and courage, dying peacefully in his home with family at his side. Jim is survived by brother Lester and sister Janet both of Meldrum Bay and nephews Jeffrey and Ryan. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held at the Meldrum Bay Inn, 2 pm 4 pm on Saturday, November 5, 2011. If so desired, donations to the Cancer Society would be appreciated. Online condolences may be left at www.culginfuneralhome.ca. Culgin Funeral Home, Gore Bay, 705-282-2270.
