Bill Davidson helped put LaCloche-Manitoulin on the map through TV series
By Jim Moodie
TORONTO- Rainbow Country has lost the man who coined that very name and introduced many to the area through a short-lived but unforgettable television program set in the LaCloche foothills.
Bill Davidson, the creator and producer of the CBC series Adventures in Rainbow Country, filmed in the vicinity of Whitefish Falls and Dreamers Rock, passed away in Toronto on November 14, at the age of 81.
A gregarious and inventive spirit, Mr. Davidson began his career during the early days of the National Film Board (NFB) and helped create, write and direct a number of films and programs for the CBC, including the popular 1960s childrens show Razzle Dazzle, which featured a character named Howard the Turtle.
His most famous in these parts, however, for his work on Adventures in Rainbow Country, an adventure show he conceived in the late 1960s and for which he served as producer, co-writer, and sometimes director.
Aired on CBC in 1970-71, the 26-episode series starred Lois Maxwell of James Bond fame as Nancy Williams, a widow raising her children Billy and Hannah in a wild and magical corner of Northern Ontario. Billys Ojibwe friend Peter Gawa (played by Buckley Petawabano) was a prominent recurring character, as was a bush pilot named Dennis McGubgub.
Many local people had bit parts and some of the scenes were shot on Manitoulin. The production company Mr. Davidson founded to oversee the project was called Manitou Productions.
While the program ran for just that one season, it has had an extended life in reruns shown on a variety of networks, including the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) and Dejaview.
And its name would subsequently be applies to the Sudbury-Manitoulin tourist region, with the travel association responsible for this area still titled Rainbow Country.
In 2006, a reunion of cast, crew and fans of the Rainbow Country series gathered in Whitefish Falls to celebrate the ongoing fascination with this family drama and reminisce about the time of its production. Mr. Davidson, as the programs originator, was guest of honour for this get together, his presence uspstaged only by the arrival of Mr. Petawabano, who travelled all the way from northern Quebec to attend.
Mr. Davidson had a shorter commute, as the Torontonian acquired a cottage near Whitefish Falls back in 1968, when he first came to the area to develop his idea for the TV series, and faithfully arrived each summer to stay at the Bay of Islands retreat along with his wife Mary.
Hed go back and forth to Whitefish Falls in this aluminum fishing boat painted bright yellow, remarked Denis Belton, the organizer of the Rainbow Country reunion. He was supposed to meet me one time but had to turn back because the motor conked out. Hes 78 at the time, and hes rowing back to his island. Clayton Bond, who operated the Hilly Acres resort in Whitefish Falls for 17 years (its now operated by his son), became good friends with Mr. Davidson over the many summers that the Rainbow Country legend spent in the area.
He used to stop and let us know how he was doing every time he came to his camp, said Mr. Bond. He was really well liked around Whitefish Falls, and he would visit with everyone he knew and had met during the days of Rainbow Country.
Mr. Davidson and his wife kept a low profile at their cabin on Pig Island (the name owes to a time when a group of Finns held a pig roast at the site, explained Mr. Bond), but if there was anything he could do for the village, he would, said the former resort owner. This apparently included distributing copies of the TV series on VHS tape to residents of the community who wanted to relive their favourite episodes.
It was a great advertisement for the area, said Mr. Bond of the program. His only regret is that, in its use to define a region, Rainbow Country takes in too wide an area. He feels the area south of Sudbury along Highway 69 has little justification in claiming to be part of this region, which more properly is between Massey and Manitoulin, in his view.
Images from the series including the fire tower at Willisville, Dreamers Rock, and the waters surrounding Birch Island and Manitoulin certainly resonated with people across Canada. The program drew four million viewers per week during its run, making it second only to Hockey Night in Canada at the time.
After his adventure with Adventures in Rainbow Country, Mr. Davidson worked primarily for OECA (the Ontario Educational Communications Authority, now better known as TVO) as a writer of educational programs, but continued to pen some scripts for dramatic films and TV shows, as well as produce and direct. He helmed a science fiction series called Starlost in 1973, and created and produced another adventure series titled Matt and Jenny.
He was a very funny man and very talented, said Mr. Belton, who attended a memorial for Mr. Davidson on November 18 in Torontos east end, where the Davidsons made their home. He was also a jazz musician and a painter, and had been writing poetry. His granddaughter read some of these poems at the service, and they were very witty, as you could expect from him.
Mr. Davidson had been exposed to the outdoors as a youngster through a resort his parents operated in the Rideau Lakes area of eastern Ontario, but it was the more rugged terrain of LaCloche-Manitoulin, and its hardy, colourful inhabitants Native and non-Native alike that really captivated him.
He respected everybody it didnt matter what culture or religion, said Mr. Belton. He oozed creativity, had a great sense of humour, and was fabulous story-teller.
In recent years, Mr. Davidson underwent a series of surgeries for skin cancer and had been coping fairly well, but while convalescing at home from the latest operation, his health went into sudden decline.
His wife and immediate family were at his bedside when he died.
Mr. Davidson is survived by wife Mary, daughters Ann and Wendy, and granddaughter Tabitha.

Big Lake
Obituary
This week I have to pen the sad and sudden death of Mr. Reid Davidson, which occurred at his home on Jan. 5th, where he was born 27 years ago. His remains were laid to rest at Big Lake cemetery, the funeral services were conducted by the Revs. Hyslop and Adams. Over 40 rigs followed his remains to the grave. Mr. Davidson was a man of fine principal and was loved by a large circle of friends. As I write the 14th of Jobe comes forcibly to my mind, Man that is born of a woman is of a few days and full of trouble, of the last Mr. Davidson had his share, 6 years ago he was taken ill with Typhoid Fever but by the great skill of Dr. Walker and a trained nurse from Toronto he was brought back to health two years later. He went to Owen Sound where he was operated on by Dr. Lang during the Harvest excursions of 1912 he went west to High River and was operated on for appendicitis. He always bore his troubles with the greatest of patience. A week before his death he complained of a pain in the abdomen which developed into a severe attack of enteritis. Dr. Davis was called and did all in human power but to no avail. He gradually sank and the end came on the 3rd day of his sickness. He leaves his mother, one brother, and four sisters besides a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.
