Oh, say that "He has arrived"
And not that "He has gone."
May every thought of him
Be in that Land of Morn.
Arrived! To hear his voice,
And see His welcoming smile'
And then to greet again,
Those he has lost awhile.
Arrived to tread no more
The weary path of pain,
Nor feel the waning strength
The body feels again.
To be forever free
From all that limits love,
In joyful service thus
He now may tireless move.
Then say not, "He has gone."
Nor think of him as dead;
But say, "In Father's House
He has arrived"-instead.
Relatives and friends attending from a distance were: Mrs. Hazel Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wagg of North Bay, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Piehl and Mr. R. L. Thessalon Man Was Drowned Moving A House
Disappeared While the Structure Was being Taken Across the Ice
A man about thirty years of age, by the name of Cole, whose wife and four children reside in Thessalon, disappeared yesterday and it is thought that he met death in drowning.
He was an employee of the Hope Lumber Company and was helping to move a house from the companys old site across the river to the new site near the town. The house was a heavy affair and I was not noticed that Cole had disappeared until half an hour after he was last seen.
The disappearance is mysterious and no light has been thrown on it says Dr. W.B. Sproule, the coroner at Thessalon.-Sault Star
The Mr. Cole mentioned in the above dispatch was the husband of Miss Kate Armstrong, daughter of Mr. J. J. Armstrong of this place. His body was found under the safe on Sunday afternoon. It seems that when the house went through the ice it tipped and the safe slid into the corner and tumbled over on the man who was working inside at the time.

Mr. John Collins dies from an accident
A very sad and sudden bereavement came on Monday, Feb. 28th, to the home of Mr. John Collins, postmaster at Honora, when he passed away on the afternoon from the effects of an accident received in the forenoon of that day.
Mr. Collins and his son-in-law, Mr. Gilmour, were engaged in cutting down and preparing trees for timber. A dead tree leaned against the tree which he was cutting down, and in falling struck Mr. Collins on the head, fracturing his skull. His right arm was also broken. He never recovered consciousness, and passed away during the afternoon.
Mr. Collins was a man who was highly respected; and the community was shocked and grief-stricken to hear of his sudden death.
His wife and family have the deep sympathy of their many friends in their great affliction.

JOHN LAWRENCE COLLINS
In loving memory of John Lawrence Collins, May 10, 1932-February 16, 2002.
When I was young, I enjoyed the forests where the deer run free, fields where the cattle and sheep grazed. Collins' Falls in the early spring as the mist touched my face, upper coastline of Honora Bay where the tall pine trees grow. The country store (COLLINS' GENERAL STORE) where visitors from our communities always greeted me with "Hello, John and how are you today?" Oh, how I would be excited and laugh. Children as they walked home from the little country schoolhouse in Honora Bay. My niece Pam and nephew Brent who would always give me a hug and a kiss "Good Night, Uncle John". Then the time came for me to live at Manitoulin Lodge in Gore Bay where the staff and volunteers extended their love and personal care towards me for 25 years. I was never forgotten when the children came to read, the pets came to visit and the staff always took time to ensure I was a part of their day. On February 16, 2002 I left my earthly home to be with my family members gone before me. Thank you for all of my memories, love and care...John Collins.
"I will gather the lame, I will make the lame a remnant, The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and loving toward all He has made" Micah 4:6,7-Psalms 145:17.
John will be laid to rest Saturday April 27, 2002 at 2 pm. Cold Cemetery.

The late Mrs. Cooper
Mrs. John P. Cooper whose maiden name was Elizabeth Whitemore Bennett was born at Wilshamstead, Bedfordshire, England, 74 years ago. She was married in 1878 and with her husband and two children came to Canada, July 1st, 1884, having landed on Manitoulin Island exactly two weeks after leaving Bedford. Mrs. Cooper was a true type of English industrial life, in diligence, frugality, kindness and good common sense. She was a stranger to any manner tending toward affectation; and in her home one always felt at home. A kind, loving and thoughtful wife and mother, she is much missed, especially by her life companion who had so long shared the changing experiences with her. Many changes have taken place since they arrived and located three miles from Mindemoya. They had no conveyance to church, but walked the three miles to the Sunday service in the old school. The children had to go the same distance to attend school. Yet those were happy days in which honest labor produced restful slumber and satisfying contentment. In religion Mrs. Cooper was a Methodist, and later with the congregation was identified with the United Church of Canada.
As a pastime she often occupied leisure moments by making English pillow lace, an industry common in many parts of the Old Land, but not much acquainted with here.
The call came to her on May 13th, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper have been with many pioneers, true nation builders.
Besides her husband she is survived by six children. These are Mrs. Thos. VanHorn, Mindemoya; Mrs. Jas. Hopkins, Tehkummah; Mrs. Emily Fridley in the west, whose husband died in February last; Harry, William and Mrs. William VanHorn at Mindemoya. One son, Fred, died in England. The large attendance at the funeral service gave expression to the high degree of respect in which Mrs. Cooper was held.
Rev. Mr. Moddle, her pastor, conducted the funeral service. The Rev.'s Anglin and Munro also spoke briefly on the occasion. The remains were laid to rest in Mindemoya cemetery, where the remains of many of the pioneers of the neighborhood repose.

LENA MAY COOPER
The community was shocked to hear of the death, on Friday, October 31st, of Lena May, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooper, aged six and a half years. The funeral was held on Sunday last and the United Church was filled to the doors, and many people failed to gain admittance. Rev. W.H. Bradford conducted the service and preached a very appropriate sermon, taking for his text Luke 18:16: and impressing on the large congregation the truth underlying the words, "And a little child shall lead them."
The pall bearers were six little girls, Edith and Ethel Marshall, Gladys and Jessie Wagg, Nellie Smith and Winnie Love.
The sympathy of all goes to the bereaved father and mother, three younger sisters and two brothers.

Goes to Investigate Gruesome Discovery
Principal Inspector Ward to Probe Death of Indian on Manitoulin Island
Provincial Inspector Ward has been ordered to Manitoulin Island by Acting Deputy Commissioner Boyd to investigate the finding of the body of Angus Corbiere, an Indian, on the shore of Bedford Island, near Little Current.
Provincial Constable Shields, in a message to headquarters here, says he is convinced that the case is one of murder. The body was found July 1 with the legs fastened by clothesline wire. The head was severed from the body. The remains were preserved, and, according to the Coroner for the district, had been in the water some six or seven months.
Corbiere belonged to the Indian Reserve at West Bay, on Manitoulin Island. He had not been seen since November, when he worked for Henry Baker, a lighthouse-keeper on Clapperton Island. Baker identified the body. Following disclosures at the inquest held by Coroner Major, the mans wife and grown-up son have been taken into custody and lodged in the district jail pending the completion of Inspector Wards probe.

Her rugs were beautiful woodland designs, deer, flowers, bears, etc. made with great precision and care. She also picked sweet grass, curing it to make into quill boxes, place mats, and mats. As her husband said, long pain staking work for little pay. To provide for her family she had a fruit cellar that she filled with carrots, potatoes, turnips and apples. She preserved wild strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, chokecherries and crab apples, which she also traded for salted fish. Annie also spent hours on her treadle sewing machine, remaking dresses to fit the girls. Religion was very important, she often told the family when I go, I want to be buried as I have lived she honoured all the holidays and traditions, going early with the children, before they went to school to say prayers. As you remember me, smile at the things I loved to do,
And on your next trip to the Casino, drop in a few coins for me too!
Share in the joy for the game of Bingo that I truly love,
And I will always be playing along side you from up above.
Stitch a quilt; gather lots of plants and maybe cook a meal the southern way,
And I will always be with you each and everyday.
I know your heart is saddened but smile at the memories of me
For I have gone to a better place where no suffering there will be
We knew the time was near but I left so suddenly
Because the Lord reached out his hand and said
"It's time to come home with me."
I tried to hold on as long as I could,
But I knew you would all be ok
And whenever you need me, just whisper my name and I will never be far away.

Mrs. Ellen Courish
Another personality long identified with the history of Providence Bay has been removed by the passing of Mrs. Ellen Courish, beloved wife of the late Wm. Courish, on Nov. 26th. Mrs. Courish was born in the township of Mono, County of Dufferin, in the year 1856. She came to Manitoulin with her parents at the age of twelve years, that is, fifty-four years ago, and was, therefore, one of the early settlers. In 1896 she married Wm. Courish, since which time she has resided in Providence Bay. Mr. Courish died about a year and a half ago, and was tenderly cared for during his long illness, by his thoughtful and loving wife. The strenuous nature of that care had much to do, no doubt, with the death of Mrs. Courish, as she was seen to be rapidly failing before her husband passed away. After his death she never recovered her wonted strength, but gradually became weaker until her end came, although she kept up bravely until the last. By the death of Mrs. Courish the United Church at Providence Bay has lost one who, when she was able, was among its most faithful and active supporters, and the community has lost a good friend and neighbor.
The display of flowers, both in the church and on the casket spoke emphatically of the esteem with which she was held in the village. She was tenderly nursed through her lingering illness by her neice (sic) Mrs. John McGauley.
Her surviving brothers are James Ritchie of Consort, Alta. and John of South Bay Mouth, Manitoulin Island.
Messrs. David and Robert Sim of Hilly Grove are half-brothers; and Mrs. David Sagle of The Slash is a half-sister.
The service in the church, which was filled to the door, was conducted by Mrs. Courishs late pastor, Rev. Wm. Munro, with appealing addresses given by Messrs. J. Thorburn, J. Gordon, A. Caddel and W. Sterling.
The remains were laid beside those of her late husband in Providence Bay cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
