Obituary
Mr. Peter Caddel
There passed away on Saturday morning, Oct. 2, another pioneer of Manitoulin, with the passing of Mr. Peter Caddel of the 8th concession of Canarvon. Mr. Caddel was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Donald Caddle (sic), and was born in Perthshire, Scotland, on the 10th of March, 1850.
He came to Canada with his parents at the age of four years. The family resided for a short time in Waterdown near Hamilton, Ont., and removed thence to the Twp. of Oneida, near Caledonia, County of Haldimand, Ont.
Forty-eight years ago at the age of twenty-two, Mr. Caddel came to the Manitoulin Island. The family located on the 8th con. of Carnarvon and Peter purchased a farm in the same neighbourhood.
About forty years ago he united with the Presbyterian Church and about thirty-five years ago was elected an Elder of the Providence Bay congregation, an office that his father had previously held. For a number of years he was Superintendent of the Sunday School at No. 2 and always took a deep interest in church work. With Mr. Caddels passing the last of the early Elders of the church on the Providence Bay field has been removed. Six years ago he began to suffer seriously from heart trouble, which became more intense as years passed. Many times he thought the end was near and a short time ago he suffered from a severe attack of erysipelas, which, acting on a system which was weakened by long continued heart trouble, nature had not the strength to recover. The end was peaceful and to a constitution which had suffered much death brought a kind release.
After remaining a widower for a number of years, eleven years ago, Mr. Caddel married Miss Sarah Holdback, of Toronto, who survives him. He is also survived by the following children Mrs. Thos. Stephens of Toronto, Mrs. Jos. Stuart of Lockport, N.Y., Wm. A. of Toronto, Mrs. Wilmot Blackie of Downey, Cal., Isabel of Toronto, and J.H. and John at home. Four brothers and one sister also survive, John of Mindemoya, Alex of Carnarvon Tp., William and James of Massey, Ont., and Mrs. L. Owen of Sault Ste. Marie Ont.
The funeral service was conducted in the Providence Bay united Church by Rev. Wm. Munro assisted by Mr. J. Thorburn, from which a large number followed the remains to its last resting place in the family burying plot in Providence Bay cemetry (sic)
The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing relatives in the hour of their sorrow.

Obituary
Charlie Cadieux was a humble war hero and proud provider
By Lindsay Kelly
MANITOULIN The passing of Remembrance Day, when we recall the courage and sacrifice of our soldiers, was especially poignant this year for Islanders, as Manitoulin is also mourning the passing of one of its veterans of the Second World War.
Nearly a month before Remembrance Day, at the age of 92, Mindemoya veteran Charlie Cadieux died on October 15 after a long illness. He is survived by his second wife, Irene, two sons and three daughters, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Described by loved ones as a positive, generous, deeply caring man, Mr. Cadieux wore many hats in the community, but he began his career as a military man, after enlisting in the Queens Own Rifles regiment of the Canadian Forces. Initially, Mr. Cadieux was sent to Halifax to man a harbour gun on Signal Hill, and later was transferred to Newfoundland where he was made gun sergeant and demo expert. He would never disclose the details of the destruction he witnessed, but has said that he was lucky to have made it to old age.
Only half my men returned, he acknowledged in 2006 on the occasion of his 90th birthday party. Most of them were killed, so Im very lucky man to be 90.
The soldier eventually found himself on the front lines of the Second World War in Normandy earning 11 medals for his service to Canada, including the Victory Medal, a Normandy medal with his name on the back and a Holland medal. But Mr. Cadieux declined to accept the glory associated with war.
The government tried to make heroes out of us but we werent heroes, he once said of his time in the war. We were scared a lot of the time and we did what we had to do because we were fighting for our country.
His travails on the battlefields of France were a long way from the small town of Stouffville, Ontario where Mr. Cadieux grew up alongside five siblings four boys and a girl and where he mastered the culinary art of baking fresh bread and cooking roast beef, potatoes and macaroni and cheese.
Blessed with a photographic memory, schooling came easy for the young student, but before he was able to graduate from elementary school, he was called away to assist with the familys delivery business after his father became ill. Though he went back to school later, determined to finish his education, it didnt take long before the young entrepreneur returned to work.
My family wanted me to return to Grade 5 and continue my education, he told the Expositor in 2006. I tried, but the difference in size and experience with the average 10-year-old was too much. After two weeks, I left to work in the local creamery.
Mr. Cadieux enjoyed a happy family life, marrying his sweetheart Irene Palmateer in 1937 at the age of 20. Together they had five children and settled in Mindemoya, where they remained until Irenes death in 2005 of Alzheimers. After 68 happy years together, his wifes death left a huge hole in Mr. Cadieuxs life, but three years later, the nonagenarian found love again with his second wife, also named Irene.
She was beside him in 2006 as he celebrated his 90th birthday with family, friends and members of the Mindemoya community. People dont realize how lonely you get, he said at the time, patting the hand of his second wife. But eventually, I got over that, and met this beautiful woman and we got married. Mrs. Cadieux said she will miss her husband, who, although she married late in life, proved a constant companion, and their union made for some very happy moments.
He was a terrific man, she said following his death. Im really going to miss him. We had a great two and a half years.
She recalled his passion for sports baseball, hockey, any sport you can name and said he even contemplated competing as a professional boxer at one time, but seeing many people get hurt curbed his interest.
He had a French name he had a Catholic father and a Protestant mother and he lived in a predominantly English town, so he got in a good many fights, she chuckled. Thats probably where he got his training.
Mr. Cadieux had been a skillful athlete since his youth, when lacrosse and hockey were his favourite sports, even competing in the ring for the army in Newfoundland. Later, he applied the same passion to helping local youth on Manitoulin.
He would help the kids that had no money for sports to pay for their dues for the teams, or their skates or sticks, and he refereed games, Mrs. Cadieux said.
He was also a successful businessman, and for 35 years, people travelling through Mindemoya could shop for garments locally by making a stop at Cadieux Clothing, the clothing store he operated with his first wife.
In the midst of his busy work life, Mr. Cadieux found time to perfect his carpentry skills, building two homes, his store and a cottage, in addition to hunting and fishing. He also worked to better his community serving as trustee for the Manitoulin School Board from 1947 to 1982, which included setting up Manitoulin Secondary School in 1969, becoming a member of the Lions and serving as a Mason. He was always looking to do something for someone else, Mrs. Cadieux recalled.
Mr. Cadieux remained a soldier to the end, and up until just before his death, he could be seen attending Remembrance Day services and visiting graves of soldiers as a member of the War Pensioners of Canada, placing plaques on their graves recognizing their service. He was able to attend a ceremony in Espanola this past June, at which time he was honoured with a long-service medal for this contribution to the organization.
Reflecting on his life a few years ago, Mr. Cadieux said he wouldnt change anything in his life, and he remained happy to live on Manitoulin Island or, as he called it, Gods country.
I really feel proud that I could contribute something valuable to my country, and also give to my community and to my family, he said at that time. Even in the hungry thirties, the kids were in school and food was on the table.

The Lord is my pilot and I shall not drift
He lighteth me across the darkest waters
He steereth me in deep channels
He keepeth my log
He guideth me by the star of holiness for his namesake

I will dread no danger, For thou art near me

The Late George Campbell
Last winter one of Manitoulin's old pioneers passed from the scenes of time, to whose death we saw no reference in the papers. The call came to Mr. Geo. Campbell Mindemoya, on Feb. 10th, 1924.
He was a son of the late Alex. Campbell, his mother's maiden name having been Isabella Montgomery. Mr. Campbell was born in the township of Notawasaga, County of Grey and near Collingwood, Ont. The family removed to Manitowaning in 1875 when the subject of this sketch was eighteen years of age; and he, in common with other pioneers, shared the toils and inconveniences inseparable from pioneer life. He was a worthy and industrious citizen, and was respected in the community in which he lived. He married Miss Ada Lehman.
Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons and one daughter, namely, James, Ralph, Percy and Lily. Mr. Campbell was one of a family of three brothers and five sisters, of these, only one member, Mrs. Alex Dermid, living near Providence bay, survives.

Mr. Campbell had been on the Manitoulin over forty-eight years, and therefore, held a place among the pioneers of the island.

[MARY CAMPBELL]

Obituary
Mrs. Alexander Campbell
The hand of death has again removed from our midst one of the time honoured, early settlers of the Manitoulin District. Mrs. Alexander Campbell of Billings, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.M. Lloyd of Silver Water, at 8 a.m. on Sat. Dec. 11th. She had been in a critical condition for some time, the principal ailment being apparently, the frailty peculiar to advanced life. She had reached the mature age of eighty five years of age and seven months.
Her maiden name was Mary Lyons. She was born at Thornhill in York County Ont. in May 1835. At the age of twenty two she was married to Mr. Alexander Campbell and for some time resided in Vaughan Township near the place of her birth. Later she spent some years in Innisfil township in Simcoe County. About forty four years ago with her husband and family she moved to the Manitoulin and settled in Billings township were she has since resided.
With her family she passed through all the experiences incidental to pioneer life. Residents, who lived on the Manitoulin forty four years ago will be fully aware of all that means. In theses early struggles deceased took her full share and the success of the family is due in no small measure to her persevering spirit. Honest in business, diligent in labour, fervent in spirit, she possessed the essential qualifications for a leader in the life of home.
On Saturday evening Dec. 11th, her remains were conveyed from Silver Water to the home of another daughter, Mrs. C. Hunt of Kagawong from whence the funeral took place on the following day at 2 p.m. The service was conducted by Rev. J. McLaughlan in the United Church. From thence the remains were taken to the cemetery near by, where she was laid to rest beside her husband who predeceased her fourteen years ago.
She leaves behind her a family of five daughters and two sons Mrs. W. Jeffrey and Mrs. Jas. Jeffrey of Little Current, Mrs. C. Hunt of Kagawong Mrs. Thos. Dickout of Edison, Alta., Mrs. W. M. Lloyd of Silver Water, Nelson of Gordon and D.O. of billings. She also leaves twenty two grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

Obituary
Robert John Campbell
The subject of this sketch was born in Hanover, Ont., on September 9th, 1860, and in that place his early boyhood days were spent. Deceased was a man of sterling qualities. Quiet, unassuming, shoe home was always open, whose hand was ever ready to help those who needed help. No community can lose a citizen like R. J. Campbell without being rendered immeasurably poorer. The funeral, which was conducted by Rev. J. J. Matthias, was attended by a large concourse of sympathizing neighbors and friends from various points on the Island. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, bearing in their sweet way, in a small measure the high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who knew him. Obituary -
WELL KNOWN LAKE CAPTAIN PASSES SUDDENLY ON MONDAY.
Capt. Adam Casson Had Wide Circle of Friends. After an illness extending over several months,Captain Adam Casson, age 64 passed away suddenly on Monday evening at his home here. Some few weeks ago he visited Toronto where he received medical treatment and hopes were entertained that he would improve with the arrival of the warmer weather, but the end came unexpectedly and his many friends both in Canada and many parts of the United States will learn with sincere regret of his passing. Capt. Casson was born in Dalton, England, and at the age of 6 years came to Canada with his parents, who settled near Meaford. Forty-five years ago he came to Manitoulin and was engaged in connection with the lumbering industry for some time. About 30 years ago, he started working for Purvis Bros., first at Duck Island and later at Gore Bay. After coming to Gore Bay, he became active as a sailor and received his Captain's papers in 1909 and for the past 22 years was in charge of the Str. Winona operating daily between Gore Bay and North Shore points during summer months. A very capable sailor, he was known by all for his pleasing personality and kindness to the travelling public. He was highly respected by all members of his crew and they at this time will pay homage to one they loved and honored. A public spirited man, he was active in the welfare of the town, serving on the School Board and Telephone Board for a number of years. In religion he was an Anglican, and in fraternal circles a member of Gore Bay Lodge A. F. & A. M. since its charter was issued some 23 years ago. An honorable man in the truest sense of the word he was a credit to himself his family and his town and was held in the very highest esteem by his employers and fellowmen, and in his passing we lose one of our truest and best citizens. The funeral took place on Wednesday, afternoon from the Anglican Church under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, the service being conducted by the Rev. F. E. Jewell. The large attendance at the funeral and the many floral tributes bore testimony of the love of his many friends. Besides his widow he leaves, to mourn his loss, a daughter, (Vera) Mrs. H. Coutts, of Detroit, and one son Adam of Gore Bay, Brothers and sisters who survive are, Mrs. Alex. Purvis, Mrs. W. Dinsmore, Gore Bay, and Mrs. Wm. Purvis of West Selkirk, Man., Mrs. Lindon Thorn of Wapella, Sask., Geo. D. of Regina, Sask., Henry of Sault Ste . Marie, Ont. To the sorrowing Relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

1928- JOHN CAY
Again the Grim Reaper, death, called in our community and has taken from us on of our early settlers in the person of Mr. John Cay of Carnarvon Township, Cay settlement on July 25th, 1928.
Although not entirely unexpected as Mr. Cay had been in poor health for a long time, yet when the end came friends and relatives felt the loss keenly.
Mr. Cay was at the ripe age of 93 years and his decease reminds us of a sheaf of grain ready to be garnered in, as is the case of all people of the earth over the allotted span of 70 years.
He was born in York township, Hogs Hollow, Yonge St., where now stands or near by the City of Toronto, on Aug. 8th, 1836.
In the year 1864 the family moved to Collingwood, Ont., later coming to Manitoulin Island in the year 1882 where the most of the family still reside.
Mr. Cay was upright and honest and in the early days of pioneer life fought a good fight and helped with our forefathers to leave us the heritage which we now enjoy.
The funeral which was largely attended was conducted from the United Church, Providence Bay on July 27th by Rev. Mr. Black, minister of that church.
Six grandsons acted as pall bearers, namely. Messrs. Percy, James, Geo., Albert, Joseph and Lee Cay.
The community join in sympathy with the relatives of the deceased.
