Why did your ancestors come to Lanark County?
- The United Empire Loyalists (UEL) & their children were given land grants for being loyal to the Crown vs. United States
- The volunteers & military were given land grants for fighting on the British side vs. United States
- The poor economic state of Scotland after the Napoleonic War - government assisted emigrants were given land grants
- The poor economic state, the crime, and hunger in Ireland - government assisted emigrants were given land grants
- The French (Quebec) were looking for employment
- Independent settlers looking for a better life, to be a minister, to be a school teacher
