Peter McGregor and Catherine Ferguson Family
Peter McGregor and Catherine Ferguson my immigrant ancestors left the Parish of Balquhidder in Perthshire, Scotland in the early spring of 1818. They both were born in 1796, so would have been 22 years of age that year. They sailed on a ship called the Sophia, from the Port of Greenock on July 23, 1818 and 43 days later arrived at Quebec. The passenger list gave their village as Strathyre and also shows them being in charge of two children. This caused some confusion in our research, but it appears that they were travelling with family and/or friends and the children were part of another family. Peter eventually ended up drawing the southwest half of Lot 8 on Concession 9 in Beckwith Township, Lanark County.
At Perth on May 4th 1821 Peter McGregor married Catherine Ferguson and they settled down on their farm along Mississippi Lake. Their children were as follows;
John – Feb.7, 1822 m. Ruth Traveller
Mary - 1823 m. William Peden
Christiana 1825 m. William Groves
Catherine 1828
Robert 1830
Lucy 1833 m. Colin Campbell
Peter 1835 m. Elizabeth McKinlay
James –Jun.18, 1837 m. Isabella Collins
Archibald –Jun.18, 1840 m. Margery Grant
Catherine died in 1848 and Peter remarried Fortune Traveller Grant about 1850. Another daughter was born;
Janet born 1850 m. Peter McEwan
Peter died on the farm in Beckwith, March 16, 1866 and is buried beside Catherine in the United Cemeteries near Carleton Place.
