MUNRO Family;

In 1830, Donald Munro (1799/22 Jan 1881) and Margaret Murray, sailed to Canada from Dornach, Scotland, with their children; John at the age of 9 (born 1821/01 Jan 1911); Janet at the age of 7 (born 1823); Hugh at the age of 5 (7 Nov. 1825/19 Sep 1895), Daniel at the age of 4 (born 1826) and an infant son Donald (born 1828).  They spent a very long 16-week crossing of the treacherous Atlantic Ocean, aboard a ship that was inflicted with a flu-like epidemic.  This epidemic claimed the life of their infant child, Donald.  This young couples start to a better way of life had an unfortunate beginning.

McKAY Family;

In 1832, Alexander McKay (1777/25 Nov 1859) and Catherine Murray and their family; Alexander (Sandy) McKay (1810/Oct 1895), his young wife (Jessie MacDonald 1808/May 1895), two brothers and two sisters, left Dornach Scotland to seek their fortune in this new land (Canada) across the sea. They arrived at Brockville fourteen long weeks of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They began the long weary trip to the Lanark Settlement on foot, camping out in the open for the want of other shelter, until at last they reached Heron's Mills, a seven-mile distant from the chosen lot. The Heron family hospitality (East half of Lot 10 Con 3) offered shelter of their bush shack. Mrs. Heron did not ascertain that she would have a newborn baby in her home by morning, throughout the night Jessie bore her first child.

Sandy McKay's sister, Marion (1819/02 Aug 1875) grew into a lovely young lady and in 1845 became the wife of John Munro (1823/ ?? )

Sandy McKay's sister, Catherine (1833/4 Dec 1916) married Hugh Munro (7 Nov 1825/19 Sep 1895) (John's brother) in 1849.

It is from the union of these two families that many persons born in the Lanark County region are true decedents of some of the Lanark Highlands first settlers.
