photo, taken in the Fall of 1929, shows 67 members of the Bethel Presbyterian
Church in Mallory, Minnesota. At least 57 of
these members were either born in Lanark or Frontenac Counties, Ontario,
Canada, or are descendants of those born in Lanark and Frontenac Counties.
The church was built 2 miles east of Mallory in Nisbet Township, Polk
County, Minnesota in 1886 on land donated by James Lee and Christine Nisbet who
came from Lanark County. The Bethel Presbyterian Church was destroyed by fire on
Dec. 1, 1946. A decision to disband
instead of rebuilding was made by the members with much regret. The members then
joined the Mendenhall Presbyterian Church in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
Many families from Lanark and Frontenac settled here during the late
1870's and early 1880's. Some of the names are: Brownlee, Bryson, Geddes,
Hannah, Lee, McDonald, Millar/Miller, Morrow and Nisbet.
Many of these members are buried in the Nisbet Cemetery, which is a
private cemetery in Huntsville Township, Polk County. The Nisbet Cemetery
Association was formed on June 29, 1885. The land was donated by David Nisbet,
1846 - 1877, who was born in North Sherbrooke Twp., Lanark County, a son of
William Nisbet and Christina Lindsay.
