Renfrew
Mercury Newspaper –
9 December, 1910
.
The telegram to Mr.
O. Wright on Thursday last announcing the death of Mr. W.
H. Tait at Summerland, B.C., that morning, Dec. 1st, was
followed by a letter from Mrs. Tait written on the 26th Nov. which
contained the intelligence that her husband had been laid low by an attack of
typhoid fever; she herself having been hurriedly summoned back from a visit to
friends in Edmonton. To none of
the many friends in Renfrew did the news of Mr. Tait’s death come with
greater shock than to the editor of The Mercury; for only a few days
previously we had enjoyed his hospitality and spent a delightful day in his
company, as he drove us about the fruit prairies lying above Summerland or
wandered together over his own fine fruit farm, as he, with the caressing care
of the man who delighted in his new life, described the varieties of fruit and
the irrigation system by which the land was made fruitful, and the steps that
he was taking to add some of the touches of decoration akin to those
surrounding the old Eastern home. Then
too we learned something of the depth and the warmth of his feeling towards
his old friend and employer, Mr. N. Dean—to whom and Mr. T. Morris we
carried back special messages—as well as for the “good old town of
Renfrew” which he knew he would never be able to see again.
For though he suffered less from asthma in Summerland, an excursion a
short time before to his late Albertan home had convinced him that he must
thereafter remain in the warm and higher country.
How little could we foresee as he drove us along to visit every old
Renfrewite in the district that even here in that favored spot his
pilgrimage was nearly over! While
we were with him he seemed bright and cheerful; yet the disease which was so
soon to prove fatal must even then have had its hold upon him.
It developed very rapidly: with
strong hold upon one who was weakened no doubt by the asthma and the severe
accident he had had earlier in the year.
Mr. Tait was born in Perth
45 years ago, son of Mr. John Tait, now
of Chicago. He
came to Renfrew when about 20 years of age, first clerking for Mr. S.
McDougall and afterwards for many years with Mr. Dean.
Asthma developing some years ago he was advised to go west, and,
starting in business, prospered. In
Content, Alta., one severe winter his asthma again grew virulent, and the
doctors told him he could not live there another winter.
Hence he went on to British Columbia.
Mr. Tait was married a few years
after coming to Renfrew to Miss Addie Buffam:
who, with one daughter, Miss Irene, survives; and who, have the deep
sympathy of a host of old friends here in their bereavement, as have also the
father, Mr. John Tait; the sisters, Mrs. McDonald of Chicago, and Miss Belle
Tait of Fort William; and the brother, Mr. Alex D. Tait, of Eganville, all of
whom came to Renfrew for the funeral.
On Wednesday of this week, Mrs. Tait and Miss Irene, accompanied by Mr.
Russell Wilkinson, who had been associated in business with the deceased in Alberta, arrived in Renfrew with the remains:
and interment was made on Thursday afternoon, with Masonic honors.
Services were conducted from the home of Mr. Orange Wright:
the service being conducted by Rev. J. Day and Rev. W. M. H.
Quartermaine. The funeral was with
Masonic honors, the service of that Order being impressively delivered by Rt.
Wor. Bro. D. Barr at the graveside.
There were many floral remembrances from private friends, as well as from the
Masons, the Canadian Foresters and the Ancient Order of United Workmen, with
all of which the deceased was connected.
The pall-bearers were Bros. David Brownlee and J. M. Plaunt of Ottawa; J. B. McLaren, R. A. McLaren, H. N.
Moss and John Anderson.
