MISS ANNIE NUGENT (1952) - (By Pakenham correspondent) - The death occurred on Satur­day morning, October 18, at her home in Pakenham, of Miss Annie Nugent, a highly esteemed resident of the direct throughout her life. Deceased was the daughter of the late John Nugent and Margaret Haney, and was born at Cedar Hill 77 years ago. About, 30 years ago, she moved to Pakenham to reside. She was devoted member of St. Peter Celestine's Parish, and was an active member of the Catholic Women's League and the League of the Sacred Heart. She was a member of a family of eight of whom seven survive: five brothers; Arthur, Arkinson, John and Sylvester, Pakenham; and Vincent, Los Angeles ; two sisters; Mrs. W. J. Keyes and Miss Minnie Nugent, Pakenham. The funeral on Monday mor­ning October 20, to St. Peter Ce­lestine Church was largely at­tended. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. George Larose, Ottawa , with Rev. John Burke, Fallowfield, and Rev. Martin Mooney, Chelsea , as deacon and sub deacon. Mrsgr. John O'Neill, Vicar -General of Ottawa Diocese, and Rev. Alphonse O'Neill, Ottawa , were present in the sanctuary. Pall-bearers were six nephews: Frank, Gerald, Burke, Tom and Hugh Nugent, and Arthur Keyes. Among those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Nugent and daughter Elizabeth, Sudbury; W. A. Keyes, Sarnia; Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Nugent, Miss McDermott, Mrs. Arthur Bel­levue, Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Longtom, Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Lunney, Miss Theresa and Hugh Nugent, Ottawa, and John Rooney, Fallowfield. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

JAMES B. CAUGHEY (1952) - (By Pakenham correspondent) - Tribute to the memory of James Ball Caughey was paid when friends from this community and outside points at­tended his funeral which was held from the Boyce funeral home, Arnprior, Tuesday, Oct 14, where service was conducted by Rev. William Sunter at 3.15 p.m. Mr. Caughey died suddenly at his home here Sunday morning October 12, of a heart condition. Mr. Caughey was born at Pembroke 57 years ago, son of the late John Caughey and Mary Hill. He was married in Pembroke to the former Ida May Brunette, where they lived for some years. Fourteen years ago they came to reside in Pakenham, where they operated a restaurant. Surviving are his widow, one son Lloyd James, Bradford; one daughter (Mary Theresa) Mrs. Roy Renwick, Hillsburg; and two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. (Dr.) L. Byers, Buffalo; Mrs. Bella Creyk, Toronto; two brothers, Alfred and Carlisle, Pembroke. Pallbearers were William Connors, Arthur Seward, Raymond Singard, Pakenham. David Mc­Nabb, Ottawa , George Steele and Bert Beaudry, Toronto . Interment was in the Union Cemetery , Pakenham.

Native of Pakenham Dies in New York State (1956) - Rev. Cecil A. S. Steen, former well -known Ottawa minister, died suddenly Wednesday, August 1, at his home in Ballston Spa , NY . He was 52. Born in Pakenham, he was the son of the late Albert Steen and the former Margaret Sparrow who survives. He was educated in Pakenham Public and High Schools and attended Normal School in North Bay . He taught schools at Bancroft and near Pakenham. He then attended Trinity College , Toronto . He was ordained in Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa , and became rector of St. George's Anglican Church, Ottawa . Later he became rector of St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Eastview, then St. Luke's Anglican Church, Ottawa , while Canon Serson Clarke served overseas. From Ottawa he went to the United States and served at churches in Trenton , NJ , and Malone , NY , then for the past six years as rector of Christ Church Episcopal, Ballston Spa. (er Dorothy L. Newman in St. - er Dorothy L. Newman in St.) George's Anglican Church, Ottawa , and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Lenore, 12, and Andrea, seven; one son, William, eight; four sisters, Mrs. A. E. Blair (Lillian), Pakenham; Mrs. John S. Aselford (Edith), Pakenham; Mrs. J. S. M. Hayes (Betty), Montreal ; Mrs. J. D. Caldwell (Mary), Ottawa ; and one brother, Allan, Montreal . Funeral was held Saturday at Christ Church , Ballston Spa, at 10.30 a.m. Interment was in Ballston Cemetery . (the above line and obituary is mixed up)

Pakenham - Prominent Pakenham Man Wilbert Fulton Dies at 71 - Wilbert Angus Fulton, was born in Pakenham Township on November 30, 1895 . He was the son of the late Alexander Fulton and Margaret Sutherland. For 22 years he farmed in the Cedar Hill District and in 1943 he moved to Pakenham where he carried on a successful business until he retirement in 1965. As a staunch Presbyterian, he worshipped at Almonte Presbyterian Church. He served on the Board of Managers and in 1964 he was elected an Elder in which office he served with faithfulness until the time of his death. Mr. Fulton was a Representative Elder for 25 years. He also served on a number of Presbytery and Synod Committees. He was a commissioner to the General Assembly on several occasions, his latest commission being to Toronto in 1965. Mr. Fulton was Congregational Secretary for 25 years. In 1960 he presented to his beloved Church an electric organ which will service as a Memorial to him and his faithful services. In politics, Mr. Fulton was an ardent Liberal. He was a member of the Arnprior Masonic Lodge and also a member of the Orange Order which he joined in 1918 and in which he held many offices including that of County Master . In 1922 he married May Floyd who survives him. Also surviv­ing are four sisters Elizabeth (Mrs. Garfield McNab), Sun City , Arizona ; Pearl (Mrs. Ross Barr,) Almonte; Mildred (Mrs. G. Eckford), Arnprior; Kathleen (Mrs. Morley Alexander), Renfrew; and several nieces and ne­phews. Funeral services were from Almonte Presbyterian Church, on Friday, January 6, conducted by his Minister, the Rev. Gordon Beaton, assisted by the Rev. R. K. Earls, Cobden, and the Rev. D. Leslie Elder, Toronto , a former minister of Almonte Church . Burial was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery . The Pallbearers were Messrs. Leonard Fulton, Bill Lawson, John Early, Art Lowe, Henry Morphy and Earl Morphy.

Mrs. P. Sutherland (1960) - Mrs. P. Y. Sutherland, the former Isabella Morris McIntyre, passed away in an Ottawa hospital on August 15, after an illness, of several months. Born at Waba, she was a daughter of the late James Mclntyre and his wife Belle Robertson and was is her 84th year. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R. L. (Jean) Sparham, Ottawa ; a brother, Duncan McIntyre, Waba; and two sisters: Mrs. George (Cecilia) Larke, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. , and Mrs. S. J. (Tina) Campbell, Moose Jaw , Sask. Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 18 from Boyce Funeral Chapel, Rev. W. J. ten Hoopen officiating. Pallbearers were Andrew Stewart, Morris Turner, Alex Symington, Morris Ritchie, Gordon McIntyre and Kenneth McIntyre. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. Interment was in White Lake cemetery.

CALDWELL - Passed away at Victoria, B.C., on Monday, April 15, 1968 , Mrs. Myrtle Louise Caldwell, age 74 years, of Victoria and formerly of Moose Jaw and Central Butte , Saskatchewan . The funeral service will be held in the W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Monday, April 22, at 1:31 p.m. Rev. Dr. H. R. Lane, minister of St. Andrew's United Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale cemetery.

WILLIAM ELSWOOD BARR - The death of William Elswood Barr, a highly esteemed and well known young man, occurred in the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Saturday May 10, 1969 after a very brief illness. Mr. Barr was born 43 years ago to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Barr who have recently moved to Arnprior from Pakenham Township . He operated his own trucking business from 1945 and, since 1950, had been a school bus operator also. In October, 1950, he married his wife, the former Marion Jean Steen, who survives, along with his eight children who are at home: Bill, Anne, Ruth, Vicki, Laurie, Lynne, Leigh and John. Four brothers. Alvin, Pakenham; Beattie, Montreal ; Garnet, Almonte; and Lyall, Arnprior, survive. The funeral service was held, in St. Mark's Anglican Church on Tuesday, May 13, 1969 at 2.30 p.m. with Rev. C. C. Conliffe conducting the service. Prior to this the body rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte. The pallbearers were Stuart Baird, Everton Barr, Stanley Barry, Edmund Coady, Percy Timmins and Frank Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Orval Adam, Ollie Barr, Jas. L. Boale, John Langford, John D. McGregor and J. S. McKay.

Mrs. F.W. Meyer - Largely attended funeral services were held in Emmanuel Anglican Church in Arnprior on the afternoon of Dec. 26th, 1966 for Mrs. F. W. Meyer who died in Victoria Hospital , Renfrew, on Dec. 23rd. Rev. Harry Hobbs officiated, and the pallbearers were neighbors from McNab Township - Hector Scheel, Gordon Scheel, Emerson Scheel, Fred Scheel, William Roach, and Frank Meyer. Interment was in Arnprior cemetery. In her 75th year, Mrs. Meyer was the former Jean Elizabeth Munro, the daughter of the late James W. Munro and Mary F. Bole, and was born in Arnprior in 1892. Her education was received in Arnprior public and high schools, and after high school graduation, she attended the Renfrew Model School to become a teacher, and she taught for several years. In 1918, she married Ferdinand (Fennie) W. Meyer in Arnprior and resided in McNab Township until the death of her husband in 1952. Since then, she resided in Renfrew with her daughter and son -in -law, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Wallace. On Dec. 17, Mrs. Meyer suffered a severe stroke and passed peacefully away six days later. Surviving is her daughter, Doreen, and two grandchildren Barbara and Gordon Wallace. Also surviving are a brother; James C. Munro, Arnprior; sisters Myra (Mrs. G. Lindsay) Arnprior; Wilhemine (Mrs. A. T. Broome) Montreal; Edith, Arnprior; Jessie (Mrs. P.J Morin), North Bay; and Doris: Arnprior. A sister, Belle (Mrs. H. H. Lynn) of Temiskaming, Que., died some years ago. Boyce Funeral Home of Arnprior had charge of arrangements. Out -of -town relative attended from North Bay , Temagami, Temiskaming, and St. Agathe des Monts , Quebec .  

Mrs. John Mulligan - PAKENHAM, Dec. 4. - (Special) - The funeral of Mrs. John E. Mulligan was held Wednesday afternoon from the Boyce Funeral Home, Arnprior to St. Mark's Anglican Church here where the service was conducted by Rev. H. A. Irwin. Interment was made in the Anglican cemetery. Mrs. Mulligan was born on the 11th concession line of Pakenham township. She was in her 79th year. She was the former Alexena Annie Sparrow, daughter of the late William Sparrow and his wife, the former Margaret McGinley. She married John Mulligan and resided on the 11th Concession for a number of years. They lived in Westboro, for several years, later making their home in Pakenham. Following the death of her husband last February, Mrs. Mulligan went to live with her niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Attie Blair, near Pakenham, where she died. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. A. H. Steen, of Pakenham. Mrs. Mulligan was a devout and regular attendant of St. Mark's Church, and was a mem­ber of the Woman's Auxiliary for many years.

JEAN REBECCA NEEDHAM - Pakenham Village and surrounding area was deeply saddened when it learned Saturday, December 18, of the death of Miss Jean Needham in the Almonte General Hospital , where she had been a patient for several months. The funeral was held Monday, December 20th, from the Comba Funeral Home to St. Andrew's United Church, Pakenham, for services at 2.30 p.m. Burial was in Pakenham United Cemetery. Church and interment services were conducted by Rev. Henley. Pallbearers were, Donald Snedden Jr., Allan McCann, Robt. Scott, Gordon Andrews, Alex Wood and Hiram McCann. Miss Needham is survived by three nephews and one niece, Donald Snedden, Perth; Dr. Fred Snedden, Hamilton; Gordon Needham, Port Colborne and Mrs. Mary Simmonds, Edmonton. The esteem in which Miss Needham was held was shown in the great number who paid their respects and by the lovely floral offerings from the neighbours and friends. Miss Needham was a life long member of St. Andrew's Church land many of its organizations. She also was organist and choir leader for many years. For many years Miss Needham was interested in dramatics and took part as well as directing many community and Church dramatic efforts. In earlier years she also attained a reputation as an elocutionist. At the time of her death Miss Needham was the oldest continuous resident of Pakenham Village , having lived in the same house for 78 years. Being blessed with unusual energy and comparatively good health during her later years, she was enabled to get much joy out of meeting people and keeping in contact with her many friends. For several years after the death of her brother she operated the Needham and Snedden Hardware. Thus another of Pakenham's personalities and landmarks has gone to her reward.

WILLIAM INGLIS SCOTT (1952) - (By Pakenham Correspondent) - William Inglis Scott, a resident of Pakenham, died in the Civic Hospital , Ottawa , in his 71st year, He had been in failing health for the past year and suffered a stroke in October. Born in Pakenham Sept. 23, 1882 , he was a son of the late Robert Scott and his wife Agnes Inglis. He was married June 30, 1909 to Luella Jane Armstrong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Armstrong, Kinburn. Surviving are his widow, his son Robert A. Scott, his daughter Muriel (Mrs. R. Gillan, Belleville); one brother G. H. Scott and three sisters; Mrs. G. E. Wilson, Pakenham, Mrs. J. F. Merillees, New Westminster, and Mrs. J. M. Smithwick, La Canada, California. The funeral was held to the United Church , thence to the Union Cemetery , Rev. William Sunter officiating. Mr. Scott was a member of the firm of Scott Bros. and was in business in that capacity for upwards of 55 years. He was active as a member of St. Andrew's United Church , serving in the choir and as an Elder for a number of years. He was prominent in organizing and supporting the local Curling Club and was a member of the Public School Board for a lengthy term, and his loss will be greatly felt in all circles of community interest. Pall bearers were, P. H. Burgess, A. E. Blair, W. P. Wilson, W. A. Scott, Nelson Humphries, and T. A. Wilson. The many beautiful floral tributes and expressions of sympathy from friends and relatives, testified to the esteem in which he was held.

Mrs. James Connery Passes In Pakenham Township (1954) - (By Pakenham Correspondent)         - Mrs. (Dorothy M. Lowry) James Connery, a life -long resident of Pakenham Township , passed away at her home, Wednesday, February 10, following an illness of several months. A daughter of the late Robert Lowry and Kate Hill, she was born at Cedar Hill, June 15, 1902 . She graduated from Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1927. Two years later she was married to James Connery, who survives, together with a son, Bobby, and four sisters: (Anne) Mrs. J. T. Snedden, Almonte; (Kathleen) Mrs. Robert Taylor, Vancouver, B.C.; (Marion) Mrs. A. M. Edington, Fredericton, N.B., and (Elizabeth) Mrs. A. E. Bangs, Ottawa. Included in a profusion of floral tributes were gifts from: Sunday School, Mission Band and WMS, Zion Church , School No. 1, Pakenham Cheese and Butter Co., Lanark Co -operative, Almonte, Blakeney WA and the Women's institute. The funeral conducted by Rev. W. Henley, was held at her home, Friday, at 2.30. Pallbearers were: Lowry and Harvey Stevenson, Keith Johnston, Palmer Wilson, David and Bill Donaldson. Interment was in Union Cemetery , Pakenham.

P. J. Farrell (1952) - (By our Pakenham Correspondent) - Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 26, for the late Patrick Joseph Farrell, 84, a highly respected resident of this community, who died in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital , Monday, November 24. The funeral took place from his home, ninth Line, Pakenham Township , to St. peter Celestine Church for requiem High Mass, celebrated by Rev. Kenneth Dodge, Huntley. The active pallbearers were his six sons. The honorary pallbearers were Percy Groves , John Giranard, William Ruddy, William Campbell, A. McWatty, and Jack Nugent. Mr. Farrell was born in Rutland , Vermont , a son of the late Matthew Farrell and his wife, the former, Mary Murphy. He came to Canada with his parents as an infant and settled on the farm where he spent the remainder of his life. 58 years ago, he married  Elizabeth Colton. Mr. Farrell served for 20 years  as a school trustee at S. S. No. 6,  Pakenham. He was a member of  the Holy Name Society of St. Peter  Celestine Church, of which he was  a devout member.  Besides his wife, he is survived by  six sons, Raymond, Hamilton, M. L. of Fitzroy Township, Leo, Pakenham, Desmond, Schumacher, Ellard, Arnprior, and Fallon at home; A foster son, Daniel Byrne, Toronto; two daughters (Vera) Mrs. Eusta Dusiaume, Sudbury, (Eileen) Mrs. Lorne Bunyan, Winnipeg. Also 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. One son, Corkery was killed in World War  two.  The large number of floral and spiritual offerings attested to the high esteem in which the decease  was held.

MRS. JOHN E. MULLIGAN (1952) - Funeral services were held from the Boyce Funeral Horne, Arnprior, Wednesday afternoon, December 31 to St. Mark's Anglican Church Pakenham, for service for the late Mrs. John E. Mulligan, who passed away Sunday, November 30, at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Attie Blair, Pakenham Township , in her 79th year. Rev. H. A. Irwin, Paken­ham, Officiated. Pallbearers were Bert Rump, Allan McCann, P. J. Groves, George Comba, Lancelet Downey, Wesley Barber. Interment was in Pinecrest Cemetery . Formerly Alexena Annie Spar­row, daughter of the late Mr. and­ Mrs. William Sparrow, deceased was born in Pakenham Township . She was married in St. Mark's Church, Pakenham, March 20, 1912 , to John Levi Mulligan, and after their marriage, the couple resided in Westboro for ten years. Latterly, they had resided in Pakenham, where Mrs. Mulligan was prominent in the Red Cross and the WA of St. Mark's Church, Her husband predeceased her February 7, 1952 . Surviving is a sister, Mrs. A. H. Steen, Pakenham.

Mrs. Margaret F. Anderson Laid to Rest at Pakenham (1959) - On Monday morning, September 21, at Pakenham, loving friend paid final tribute to one who had been a last surviving member of pioneer family of this district.

Margaret Francis (Francis) Anderson daughter of the late Johanathan Francis and his wife Margaret Carswell, passed away on Friday, September 17, in Western Hospital Toronto, after a lingering illness. The funeral service was held at he home 35 Lascellas Blvd. , Toronto on September 19, conducted by Rev. Dr. Kenneth Glazier, pastor of Glenview Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Pakenham Union Cemetery on September 2 where Rev. V. M. Ritchie, Almonte was in charge of the graveside service. Left to mourn her loss are; her husband; Joseph Anderson and son, Francis. Pallbearers were; Carswell Russell, Russell Needham, and Wilmer Ross, Pakenham; Edward MacKay Ottawa; T. Barnet Jr., Renfrew; Dr. H. Cochrane, Arnprior. Those in attendance from out -of-town included: Mrs. George F Francis, Mrs. A. V. Heney, Mrs. W C. Greig, Mrs. Edward MacKay and J. D. Sauve, Ottawa; Miss J. Carswell, Miss Margaret Carswell, Mrs. J. F. Carswell and Mrs. J. P. Gordon, Renfrew; Miss Mima Russell, Braeside; Dr. McCreary, Mrs. Archie Russell, Mrs. H. Cochrane, Mrs. A. McGregor, Mrs. W. Cardiff Arnprior; and Mrs. Hilda Kennedy Vancouver, B.C.

Miss Annie Comba Of Pakenham Dies (Jan 28, 1959) - PAKENHAM, Jan. 28 (Special) - Miss Annie Comba, a lifelong resident of this community, died in hospital Almonte. She was in her 90th year. Miss Comba, was born in Pakenham township, daughter  of the late John Comba, and his wife the former, Matilda Steen. She was one of a family of eight children. She came to reside in, Pakenham village in 1911, where she lived until her death. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church here, and a life member of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving is one brother, George Comba, with whom she resided, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service in St. Andrew United Church was conducted by Rev. Winfrid Henley. Interment took place in the Union Cemetery .

WHYTE, Ian McIntyre - At home Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1977 Ian Whyte of Pakenham in his 72nd year, dear husband of Olive Barnes, dear father of Dorothy of Hull, Quebec; James, R R # 2, Pakenham; Gaye of Carleton Place; Betty (Mrs. John Higgs), Ottawa; William of Pakenham; dear brother of Leslie, Pakenham; Andrew, Carleton Place; David, Ottawa; Robert, Vancouver; Malcolm, Ottawa; Catherine (Mrs. Palmer Wilson), Pakenham; predeceased by Kenneth; also survived by 3 grandchildren. Resting at the Boyce Funeral Home Limited, Arnprior where service will be held in the chapel Friday, Feb. 11, at       2 p.m. Interment Pakenham in the spring. Visitations Thursday 2 to 5 and 7 to 10, Friday 10 to 12.

Rev. Canon Carryer Leaves Pakenham (May 29, 1951) - Rev. Canon Gordon Carryer, rector of Pakenham has been appointed rector of Winchester by Bishop Jefferson of Ottawa . The new rector of Winchester was educated at Edinburgh University and Lichfield Theological College . He was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Chester in 1914 and raised to the priesthood the following year. Canon Carryer came to Canada in 1915 and has served in the missions and parishes of South Mountain , Newington . Aultsville, Eastview, Eganville. South March and Pakenham. At one time he was general diocesan missioner. In 1946 he was made a canon of Christ Church Cathedral. He will take up his duties at the beginning of June.

Mrs. Emerson Dorsch of Morriston visited Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. Heinz Nabert and other friends while on her way to Pembroke to attend the Evangelical Convention.

Mrs. GEORGE HENDERSON (1953) - Funeral was held from Boyce Funeral Home, Arnprior, Monday afternoon, February 23, to Arnprior Cemetery, with Rev. D. H. Woodhouse officiating, for Mrs. Mabel Margaret Henderson, wife of the late George Theo Henderson, who died in Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Henderson, the former Mabel Margaret Givens, was born March 7, 1883 , at Pakenham. She was educated in Pakenham and attended the United Church . She was the daughter of the late John Wesley Givens and Margaret Ann Clark. She married George Henderson. at Pakenham 41 years ago. Mr. Henderson died some years ago. Surviving is one son, Ewart Henderson, of Arnprior, and four sisters, Mrs. C. W. Powell, Arnprior; Mrs. Charles Kennedy, Vancouver; Mrs. W. J. Cardiff, and Mrs. W. J. Cardiff, and Mrs. Irene McGreagor, Arnprior. Interment was in Arnprior Cemetery .

LEISHMAN, Thomas Clarence - Peacefully in hospital at Ottawa , on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1976 , Thomas Clarence Leishman of Ottawa . In his 76 year, beloved son of Mrs. Thomas Leishman (Mit­chell) and the late Thomas Leishman, beloved hus­band of Maude James, lov­ing father of Ann (Mrs. Wil­liam Buckland) of Shawville; Thomas, (Tommy) of Powell River, B.C.; Charles (Chuck) of Edmonton, Alta.; also sur­vived by one sister, Mar­garet (Mrs. Howard McNeely) Carleton Place. Three brothers, Robert and Arnold of Almonte and Ar­chie of Gravenhurst. Pre­deceased by two brothers Allan and Bordon and one sister, Eileen all of Al­monte, also survived by six grandchildren, Laura, Jon, Christopher Buckland; Caroleann and Tye Leish­man, and Liesl Leishman. Resting at the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church St., Almonte where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Thursday, Sept. 2, and where service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. Rev G. F. Mrs. John J. Groves Dies in Pakenham (1950) - PAKENHAM, Jan. 20. - (Special) - Mrs. John James Groves, a highly esteemed resident of Pakenham, died suddenly on Tuesday at the home of her brother G. Harry Scott. Mrs. Groves, the former Laura Esther Scott, was born in Pakenham, daughter of the late Robert Scott and his wife Agnes Inglis, and was in her 73rd year. On October 19, 1904 , she married John James Groves, at Pakenham, and went to live on a farm in Fitzroy Township , where she resided until 1918, when she moved to Ottawa . In 1936, after the death of her husband, she came to make her home with her brother, G. Harry Scott. She was an attendant of St. Andrew's United Church , here, and a valued member of the! Women's Missionary Society and Women's Association. She was an active member of the Red Cross Society, and for a number of years was an enthusiastic curler. Surviving are; one daughter, Mrs. J. Bier, Toronto; one son, Dr. Walton Groves, Ottawa; three sisters, Mrs. G. E. Wilson, Pakenham; Mrs. J. F. Merillees, Vancouver, BC.; Mrs. (Dr.) J. Smithwick, La Canada, California; three brothers, Albert, William I., and G. Harry Scott, all of Pakenham. She was one of a family of 13 children. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, to St. Andrew's United Church , for service, by Rev. W. Sunter. Interment will be in the United cemetery.

Georgina Elliott Weds Mr. R. E. Blair (Sept. 5, 1953) - Almonte United Church, in Almonte, on Saturday afternoon at four o'clock, was the scene of the marriage of Miss Georgina Caroline Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Elliott, of Almonte and Mr. Ronald Edward Blair, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Blair, of Pakenham, Ont. Rev. H. C, Wolfraim, of Lakefield, Ont., performed the ceremony, and gladioli and ferns were used in decoration. Mr. Dan McCuan. was the organist, and Miss Eleanor Blair, sister of the bride, sang the solos. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by Miss Shirley McDougall as maid of honor, and her sisters, Miss Olive Elliott as bridesmaid, and Miss Joan Elliott as flower girl. Mr. Gordon Andrews was best man for his cousin, and ushers were Mr. Merril Elliott, brother of the bride, and Mr. Kenneth Munro. The bride wore a floor length strapless gown of imported Chantilly lace over net and white satin, with panels of nylon marquisette in the skirt. Her bolero had long sleeves coming to points over the hands. Her fingertip veil of tulle illusion, appliquéd with lace, fell from a heart-shaped, Mary Tudor headdress of white satin and nylon net, trimmed with rhinestones, and she carried a semi cascade bouquet of white gladioli and stephanotis. She wore a single strand pearl necklace, a gift of the bridegroom. After a reception in the church hall, the couple left on a wedding trip to Manitoulin Island . Travelling the bride wore a rust colored suite, with a yellow flowered hat, green accessories, and a corsage bouquet of yellow roses. Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Charles Purdy Campbell (1974) - Charles Purdy Campbell of Pakenham, died at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 18. He was born 66 years ago in Winnipeg , but spent most of his life in Arnprior. He was the son of Fred Campbell and Maude Purdy. Both predeceased him. Mr. Campbell leaves as his widow the former Irene Ethel Singard. He had two sons: Ronald, of Toronto and Gordon of Pakenham; and a daughter Susan (Mrs. Gerry Sabourin) in Toronto . He had two brothers: John of Wasago Beach, and Kenneth of RR 1 Carrington Place. His sister Helen (Mrs. Helen Younger) lives in Stainer, Ontario . He had two grandchildren. Funeral service for Mr. Campbell was held Tuesday, May 20 at the Boyce Chapel. Rev. Allan Meakin (Legion Padre) conducted the service. Mr. Campbell was buried at St. Mark's Cemetery in Pakenham. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion served as pallbearers and a special Legion service was held Tuesday.

MRS. STUART FULTON - The death occurred suddenly in Almonte on Wednesday, April 14, 1971 , of Mrs. Mary Letitia (McCann) Fulton . She was 69. Born on June 3rd, 1902 , she was a daughter of the late James Twible McCann of R.R. 1 Pakenham, and his late wife, Emma Needham. She received her education at Cedar Hill school, Pakenham Continuation School and, Ottawa Normal. During her teaching years, she taught at Union Hall, Cedar Hill and at Garson , Ontario . She was married at her home at Pakenham in 1926 to Mr. Stuart Fulton, who survives, together with a son, Hugh Fulton of Ottawa ; a daughter Jean (Mrs. Robert Drysdale) of Arnprior and two grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Hiram McCann of Pakenham, and two sisters, Irene (Mrs. James Snedden) of Almonte, and Alice (Mrs. John D. Smithson), Pakenham. She was predeceased by two bothers, Edgar and Albert McCann. Mrs. Fulton was a member of Zion United Church , Cedar Hill, and was an active worker in the W.M.S. and U.C.W. of Zion Church . She was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years, and was always very interested in young people. She was also an active member of Cedar Hill Women's Institute. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Friday afternoon, April 16, to Zion United Church , Cedar Hill, for service at 2:30 o'clock . Burial was made at Pakenham United Cemetery . The services were conducted by the minister, Rev. Harold Davies. The pallbearers were David Donaldson, Mae Camelon, John Lawson, William Lowe, Oliver Toop and John Fulton.

MERRILL ROBERT JOHN  METCALFE - The death of Merrill Robert John Metcalfe of Lot 10, Concession 11, Pakenham Township , occurred early Sunday morning, January 19, 1975 , as a result of a snowmobile accident near his home. He was 36. Born in Pakenham Township , on July 9, 1938 , he was a son of the late Albert Metcalfe and his late wife, Anne Barr. He received his education at Pakenham Public and Almonte High Schools . Merrill was a carpenter by trade and was employed with Pitts Construction at Arnprior. Active in sports and outdoor activities, he enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling and camping. He was a member of the Pakenham Curling Club, Pakenham Fire Department and Pakenham Hockey teams, and was a leader of the Pakenham Boy Scouts and Cub Packs. He was a member of Pakenham United Church . On October 28, 1961 , he was married at Almonte Presbyterian Church to the former Colleen Dorothea More, who survives, together with three sons, Brian, Alan and Randy and a daughter, Leanna, all at home. He was predeceased by a sister, who died in infancy. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street , Almonte, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, with interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery . Rev. A. C. Dodds conducted the service, while a solo was rendered by Mr. Charles Tate, accompanied by Mrs. Thora Pugh. A firemen's service was held on Monday evening. Pallbearers were Peter Dodge, Eldon Cavanagh and Harvey Smithson of Pakenham, Jack Borrowman, Whitney, Ont., David Neron, Kingston, and Albert Maynes, Eastend, Sask.

CECIL A. BURGESS - Cecil A. Burgess passed away at his residence, 82 Cleadon Drive on Sunday, December 26th, 1976 , at the age of 61, following a heart attack. He worked as a Lab attendant at the National Research Council, Ottawa , for 20 years, and retired in 1975. He was fond of fishing as a hobby. He was the son of the late Preston H. Burgess and Mrs. Burgess and was predeceased by his first wife, Helen McArthur Burns, and a sister (Nettie) Mrs. Gordon Beall, Renfrew , Ontario . On June 19, 1971 , he married Helen Mangione, who survives, and leaves one son, Kenneth P. Burgess, Ottawa , and a sister, Mrs. John T. (Lola) Forsythe, Pakenham. The body rested at the McEvoy and Shields Funeral Home, 235 Kent Street , Ottawa , where service was conducted in the Chapel on Wednesday, December 29th, at 10 a.m. Father Patrick Playfair officiated. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery in the Spring. Pallbearers were: Lyle Burgess, Beachburg; Fred Forsythe, Pakenham; Robert Renwick, Almonte; Kenneth Burns, Frank Alberti and John Mangione, Ottawa .

Pakenham parade story in New York newspaper - The following article on the Pakenham Christmas parade appeared in the Dec 10 Wall Street Journal and was given to the Chronicle Pakenham correspondent. Santa Claus is coming to town tomorrow, but the Chicken Pox got here first. Santa is coming anyway. He had chicken pox before back in the winter of 1911 and isn't worried about catching it again. But lots of folks are worried about catching it or already have it, and may stay home tomorrow instead of taking part in the welcoming parade. Which means that of all the Christmas celebrations around the globe, there is at least one, this tiny population of 371 rural communities annual do -it-yourself Santa Claus parade, that may not be bigger than ever this year. The parade here is no match in any case for the televised Thanksgiving and Christmas extravaganzas put on by the big department stores, Macy's in New York , Gimbels in Philadelphia , Hudsons in Detroit and Eatons in Toronto spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on theirs. But this cattle raising community, 40 miles from Ottawa and hundreds of other small towns continue to stage their own celebrations. The town of Pakenham is spending say $125 and individual residents spend some of their own money. Float is threatened Chicken pox certainly is complicating things. Mrs. Esther Timmins says she may have to forget about her Dairy Fare Float saluting Dairy Products. One of the girls who were supposed to ride on it came down with chicken pox last weekend on a 4 -H outing, and the other girls were all exposed to it. Mrs. Lois Timmins, Esther Timmins' daughter -in -law, is worried about her Raggedy Ann and Andy float. Her three children Scott 10, Paul 8 and Julie 6, were all exposed to the disease at school and Julie and her cousin Erica are supposed to be Raggedy Ann and Andy. Come what may the parade will go on. A pox on it isn't going to stop it. Santa will arrive on a sleigh rigged by Jim Barr and pulled by Evan Keatley's tractor. By 1 p.m. when the parade leaves the playing field for the 1/2 mile trip across town practically everybody will have contributed energy or farm equipment to the affair. The fact that everybody pitches in, on parade day, and during all the weeks leading up to it is what makes the parade a success every year. A former Pakenham resident recalls a poem that captures the flavour of the event. The fun's homemade And all you could want At the big parade In Pakenham , Ontario . One suspects that the former Pakenham resident manufactured the poem on the spot. Nobody in Pakenham, or in all of Ontario could be found who had ever heard of it. Still it rings true. The object here is entirely fun whereas the big department store parades are partly designed to impress potential customers. And Pakenham parade sure is homemade. "People here can stand on their own feet and they want Pakenham recognized as a town that can do that," says Jutta Barker who has recently moved here from Ottawa . Noah on a Wagon . So every year, people take their farm equipment out of their barns and put together the Christmas parade. Assorted pick -up trucks, hay wagons and tractors are volunteered, community and church group decorate the vehicles and children rummage for Hallowe'en costumes. The floats depend on the ingenuity of the residents. Among other things, this year's parade will include the local Anglican church's Noah's Ark on a hay wagon. A highlight this year will be a fly past by five private planes. As usual, four members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's famed Musical Ride will lead the parade. The Mounties stable the show horses near here. Anyone can get in the parade and many do. "Last year I saw a bunch of kids freezing on the corner when I drove by on my float," says Harry Barr, Jim's cousin , so I just invited them to hop aboard. If a sizeable group of onlookers shows up tomorrow the parade may just go around the block twice," figures Ian Paige a local shopowner. Even without chicken pox, the parade sometimes has problems. The route was shortened a while back when floats could not navigate the icy hill. And last year Jack Wall, a paunchy civil servant, who was supposed to be Santa Claus, never showed up. "A terrible catastrophe," he concedes. He says someone who was supposed to give him a ride to the parade failed to arrive. Also there won't be a band this year. The one from nearby Carleton Place that usually performs has folded. It is hoped that transistor radios, massed on one float and all tuned to, the same musical station will take up the slack. Jutta Barker and her husband Michael, an engineer will decide who wins the $25 prize for the best float. Mrs. Barker thinks Pakenham may be the voluntarism capital of Canada . "I've only been here four months she says, and I already have a Brownie Troop and I'm judging this parade".

Christina Beatrice Baxter - Christina Beatrice (Lillie) Baxter of Pakenham, a lifetime resident of the area, died on November 9,1975 . She was predeceased by her husband William Baxter whom she married in 1927. Born in Kinburn in 1900 she was also predeceased by her parents William John Lillie and Susan Lyon. Mrs. Baxter was a member of the Pakenham Senior Citizen's Club and the Pakenham Curling Club. She is survived by a daughter Shirley (Mrs. Ed Mebril) of West Point , Virginia , U.S.A. , a brother James Lillie of Kinburn and a sister Mary (Mrs. H Caldwell) of Arnprior. Mrs. Baxter leaves three grandchildren Bobby, Nancy and Leslie. She was predeceased by brothers Allan, Roy, Mac and Bruce Lillie and two sisters Jean (Mrs. Reg Serson) and Margaret (Mrs. Don Caldwell). Funeral services were conducted by Reverend H D Roberts on Wednesday, November 12, at the Boyce Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in St Mark's Anglican cemetery in Pakenham. The pallbearers were Bruce Serson, Robert Lillie, James Lillie, Arnold Polk, Ernest Cavanagh and Eric Craig.

Herbert Norman Fumerton, - Herbert Norman Fumerton of Ottawa and formerly of Arnprior, died in Ottawa Civic Hospital on Wednesday, November 12, at the age of 39, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert  Fumerton. After receiving his education in Arnprior Public and High schools, he was employed for many years by Ontario Hydro. He was  a member of the United Church and in recent years was an active member of the Anglican Community of Ottawa at St George's , St Christopher's and the Anglican Social Services office. He is survived by his brother, Bill, of Brampton ; and sisters Mary (Mrs. W A Craig of Ottawa ; Lorraine (Mrs. Barrie Hanson) of Carp; Harriet (Mrs. Warren Campbell); Audrey (Mrs. Ted Bayford); Alma (Mrs. Ken McNab) and Shirlianne (Mrs. Harvey Ellis) of Arnprior; and his nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Boyce Funeral Home on Friday, November 14, with Reverend Ian MacDonald and Reverend Charles Boole officiating. Burial was in Arnprior Cemetery . The pallbearers were Harvey Ellis, Ted Brydges, Phil Bayford, Robbie Bayford, Randy McNab and Richard Fumerton.  

Russell Remigus Levi - Russell Remigus Levi passed away in the A & D Memorial Hospital November 16th after a brief illness. He was born February 20, 1905 the son of the late Michael H Levi and his wife Maria Bond. He was educated in Pakenham and Arnprior schools. He worked with the Department of Justice in Ottawa and then for 13 years in the Post Office in Arnprior. He is survived by two brothers Robert Francis and John Peter, and three sisters, (Leeta) Mrs. Alex Holbein, (Alice) Mrs. John Shaw and (Jean) Mrs. Harvey Shaw. He was a member of Elgin Street Baptist church. He was Worshipful Master of Madawaska Lodge 196 for the 1954 -55 term. A memorial Masonic service was held on Tuesday evening November 18. The funeral was conducted November 19, from the chapel of the Boyce Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with the Rev M R Simmons officiating. Interment was in the White Lake cemetery. Pallbearers were; Kenneth Campbell, Carl Graham, Arthur Levi, Harold Levi , Wayne Levi and Sandy Holbein.

Denis L. Sine - Denis L Sine of RR 1 Pakenham, died at the Carleton Place Hospital on Monday, November 17, 1975 . Mr. Sine had farmed in Pakenham Township for the past seven years. Born in Pembroke Ontario in 1933, he received his education there. He was a former member of the Ottawa Fire Department for 16 years. He is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J Ross Sine, Ottawa , his wife Myrlad Margaret Paget, 3 sons, Brock of Calgary, Steven of Arnprior, Derrick at home, one daughter Donna at home, and grandson Mark of Arnprior, one brother Glenn of Vancouver. He was predeceased by a brother Marvin. Funeral services were held from the Carry Funeral Home, Almonte , Ontario on Wednesday, November 19, with Reverend Cecil Dodds and Reverend Harold Davis officiating. Cremation was at Pinecrest Crematorium.

William Harvey Young - William Harvey Young, a lifelong resident of the Arnprior area, died in an Ottawa hospital January 29, at the age of 67. Mr. Young was born in McNab Township and educated in McNab and Arnprior. He was successfully self employed as a farmer until retirement in 1966. He was a member of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church and had been an elder in the church for nearly 40 years. He was a past president of the Ottawa Valley Seed Growers, past president of the Arnprior Agricultural Society. He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows for 38 years, was past Noble Grand of the Vivian IOOF Lodge and past District Deputy of Renfrew District No 56. Mr. Young was the son of William and his wife Elizabeth Robertson, both late of McNab Township . He is survived by his wife, the former Annie Etherington, and had celebrated their 40th anniversary with family and friends in May. He is also survived by sons Robert, Edward, Kenneth and David, all of Arnprior; a daughter Eleanor (Mrs. Len Watt) of Pakenham; a sister Marion (Mrs. Harry Slaughter) of Arnprior; and eight grandchildren. A sister Gladys and a brother John predeceased him. A funeral service was held at the Boyce Funeral Home on Saturday, January 31. A church service was held at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church under the direction of Reverend Leo Hughes. Burial is in Arnprior Cemetery . Milton Symington, Kenneth Brydges, Rhinhart Mathisen, Mac MacMillan, Duncan Campbell, and Duncan Miller served as pallbearers. The session of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church served as honorary pallbearers.
