JOHN E. POYNTER (1946) - Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon for John Edward Poynter, who died at the home of his son - in - law, James Williams, Carleton Place , Tuesday morning, October 29th. The funeral was held from his late residence to St. Mark's Church Pakenham. Interment was made in the church cemetery. Mr. Poynter, in his 66th year, was born in England and came to Canada about 32 years ago. He resided in Pakenham for many years where he was employed as a section man with the C.P.R. He moved here about six years ago and was employed at the CPR gate shanty until four years ago when he retired an account of ill health. He was married to the former Mary Eleanor Mitchell, who survives. Other survivors include a son, John, of Chapleau; a daughter, Mrs. Williams of Carleton - Place; five brothers, Joseph , James and Henry, of Carleton Place; William, of Long Lac, and Charles, in the United States; and five sisters, Rosie, Daisie and Lizzie, of Carleton Place; Mary Ann, of Oshawa, and Lily, of Windsor. His mother, Mrs. John Poynter, also survives.

CARSON STEEN. (1947) - KINBURN, Jan. 24. - (Special) - Word has been received here by Sedley Steen of the sudden death of his brother, Dr. Carson Steen, Tuesday at his home in Moncton, NB. In his 47th year, Dr. Steen was a son of the late James Steen and his wife, Harriett Timmins, of Pakenham. Surviving are his wife, the former Ella McArthur, of Meaford, Ont., one daughter, Anna, and two brothers, Earl, of Ottawa , and Sedley, of Kinburn; several nieces and one nephew. Sedley Steen left on Wednesday for Moncton to attend the funeral which will be held on Friday. The body will be placed in a vault and interment will be at Meaford in the Spring. Mrs. Steen is a niece of Rev. H. S. Clugston, of Ottawa , who also will attend the funeral.  

J. F. Dunlop Die's (1947) - CARLETON PLACE , Jan. 23. - (Special) - One of the outstanding millwrights of his day, James Fitzcharles Dunlop died at the residence of his son - in - law, Nelson Humphries, RR3, Pakenham, on Tuesday. He was a native of Carleton Place and was in his 87th year. He was the son of James Dunlop and Anne Chambers and was born at Carleton Place on January 31, 1860 . On December 10, 1890 he married the former Mary Anne Bremner, who survives. While in Carleton Place , he, attended Zion United Church . Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, J. Arthur, of Smiths Falls; three daughters, Clara, Mrs. Nelson Humphries; Molly, Mrs. Frank Cryderman, of Vancouver, and Della, Mrs. R. J. Burns, of Detroit; two sisters, Mrs. Andrew W. Cram, of Carleton Place; Mrs. C. C. Allan, Toronto, and a brother, A. C. Dunlop, of Carleton Place. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Patterson and Son Funeral Home, Lake avenue west , conducted by Rev. E. C. Kelloway. The body will be placed in St. James' vault.

LEACH - WAUGH ( Feb 14 1947 ) - CARLETON. PLACE, Feb. 19 - (Special) - A quiet wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's Church Friday afternoon when Mrs. K. Waugh, the former Kathleen Mary Bissonett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bissonett, Smiths Falls, was married to Thomas Harold Leach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Leach. Rev. J. G. Clancy officiated. The bride chose a powder blue street - length crepe dress trimmed with sequins with black hat and accessories to match. She was attended by Miss Patricia "Pat" Ogilvie. Jack Bissonett, brother of the bride, was best man. The wedding music was played by Mrs. W. C. Cummings. Following the ceremony, a buffet lunch was served at the home of the bride here. The table was set with Pink carnations and pink candles. Miss Leona Stead and Miss Dorothy Gill served. The couple then left on a wedding trip to Montreal and other points. They will reside here.    

Ada Elizabeth Mason Dies in Renfrew (Jan 29, 1947) - RENFREW, Jan. 31 (Special) - Ada Elizabeth Mason, a native of Renfrew, Ont., and a resident here until a year and a half ago, died here Thursday at the home of her brother - in - law, F. X. Plaunt. The daughter of the late W. J. Mason and Mary Ross, she was educated in Renfrew Public School and Renfrew Collegiate. Over a year ago she moved to Ottawa , where she had been employed as a stenographer by J. M. Garland and Son. She was a member of Stewarton United Church and the evening Auxiliary of that church. She is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Arthur McLeod and Mrs. Duncan Angus, of Cobden; Mrs. J. C. Hopkins, of Ottawa ; Mrs. F. X. Plaunt, of Renfrew; Miss Iva Mason, Noranda, Que., and one brother, Ross Mason, Renfrew. The funeral will be held Saturday from the Plaunt residence for church service at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in the Renfrew vault.

Miss Anne Miller (1946) - The death occurred at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 10th, of Anne Miller, an old and highly esteemed resident of this community after several months illness. The late Miss Miller was born on the 10th concession of Pakenham township 89 years ago: where she spent all her life. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Miller. She was a member of St. Mark's Anglican church. The last member of a family of seven, she is survived by one niece and two nephews, Beth Miller and Allan Miller of Elgin , Man. , and Allan Scott of Pakenham. The funeral was held from the home of her nephew, Allan Scott on Tuesday, May 14th, at 2 p.m. to St. Marks church. Canon Carryer conducted the services. Interment was made in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers were  Messrs. Craig Johnston, Wm. Scott, D. J. Smith, J. E. Mulligan, Geo. Comba and Lance Downey.

Mrs. James Bennett Given Final Honors (Apr 17, 1947) - ALMONTE, April 20. - (Special) - Impressive tribute was paid to the memory of the late Mar­garet Edson (Lang) Bennett at her fun­eral hold here Saturday afternoon from the home of Mr. Joseph Gib­bons. Rev. William Aird of the Baptist Church , conducted the service and interment was made in the Auld Kirk cemetery. Born at Almonte 86 years ago, Mrs. Bennett was educated here and spent all her life in this town. She was the daughter of the late Alexander Lang and Ganet Smith and granddaughter of the late Arthur Lang who came to Ramsay township in 1820 and was the first school teacher in Almonte, Mrs. Bennett was a staunch supporter and oldest member of the Baptist Church . Almonte and was the oldest member and honorary president of the Almonte branch of the Women's Institute. In 1885 she married James Bennett, an overseer in the Rosamond Woollen Company for 50 years. He predeceased her 12 years ago. Since the death of her husband she had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gibbons and had been in failing health for the past six years. Six weeks ago she suffered a bad fall and died on Thursday, April 17. She was the last member of her generation. Surviving are two nieces and two nephews. Among those attending the fun­eral from a distance were a niece, Miss Grace Cockroft, professor of history, Skidmore College , Saratoga Springs , NY : Mrs. Gordon Schultz, Westmeath, Ont., and Mrs. Lorraine Desjardins, of Pembroke.

OBITUARY - MRS. JAMES W. MUNRO (Feb 23, 1947) - Arnprior lost a every esteemed citizen last Friday in the death of Mrs. James W. Munro, who passed away in the Arnprior and District Memorial hospital after an illness covering several months. Her demise came as a distinct surprise to, many citizens who had not known Mrs. Munro was so seriously ill. She was born in the Clay Bank section of Pakenham township, but was as intimately known in McNab and Arnprior as in her native municipality. Born 73 years ago her maiden name was Bella Jane Campbell, daughter of the late Neil Campbell and his wife, Jean Leckie. Married in the ninth line of Pakenham to Mr. Munro by the late Rev. D. J. McLean of Arnprior in 1903, she came here to reside at that time and down through the years has enjoyed the esteem of a large circle of friends. The funeral on Monday to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the Arnprior cemetery was largely attended by people from town and countryside. Rev. Alexander Mills conducted the services and the pallbearers were Messrs. William and John Campbell and four sons - in - law, P. J. Morin, Hugh Lynn, W. S. O'Neil and F. W. Meyer. Chief mourners were her husband, four daughters, one son and three step - daughters, namely, Mrs. P. J. Morin of Corbeil, Mrs. W. S. O'Neil of Matawatchewan, Misses Edythe and Doris Munro and James Munro, all of Arnprior; Mrs. F. W. Meyer of McNab, Mrs. A. T. Broome of Havana, Cuba and Mrs. Myra Lindsay of Arnprior. Mrs. Hugh Lynn passed away a few months ago. Friends from a distance were Hugh Lynn, Geo. Fleming, Felix Cannon of Temiskaming, Que.; Robt. Bole, E. J. Bartett of Warren, Ont.; Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Rev. Leo LeSage Bereaved In Death of Father (1947) - ARNPRIOR, Aug 27, - (Special) - Alexander LeSage, a native and lifelong resident of Pakenham, one of its oldest and most esteemed residents, and descendant of one of the pioneer families, died on Tuesday night in his 91st year. Throughout his long and active life, Mr. LeSage always took, a keen interest in matters of a community nature and was long an ardent curler. In recent years he instructed and coached many of the younger curlers of the district, in the game. He contributed much to the promotion of curling and to him goes much of the credit for the great interest which developed locally in it. Mr. LeSage was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph LeSage, who settled in Pakenham shortly before the birth of their son. Following his education in the local schools, he became a shoe merchant, continuing in that business until his retirement a few years ago.     Mr. LeSage was married 65 years ago to Elizabeth McFarlane, of Pakenham, who died in 1941. He was particularly devoted to his church, his home and family and in recent years derived­ much pleasure from garden and the company of his many friends. Throughout his life he had enjoyed particularly good health and last year took a trip to the Pacific Coast to visit his sons. Left to mourn are, five sons and one daughter: Rev. Leo LeSage of South March, formerly of Ottawa , who served overseas as a padre; W. L. LeSage, Edward LeSage, and Alex. LeSage, all of Vancouver; Lorne LeSage and Mrs. L Bernard Sands, of Ottawa . The funeral will take place to St. Peter Celestine Church, Pakenham, on Friday morning at o'clock and interment will be made in the Roman Catholic cemetery at nearby Indian Hill.

RICHARD W. BARBER (1947) - The death occurred at the family residence, Pakenham, Friday, March 21st of Richard William Barber, a highly esteemed resident In his 83rd year. The deceased had been in failing health for about four months. Born on the homestead, 5th line of Fitzroy, a son of the late Richard Barber and his wife Eliza Cavanagh, he is survived by his widow, the former Mary Elizabeth Mulligan, one son, J. Wesley at home, one sister, Eliza Jane, Mrs. Wm Neil and one brother, Michael J., both of Kinburn. Mr. Barber was an agent for the International Harvester Co. and had been a member of the Pakenham Council for a number of years. He attended St. Mark's Anglican Church and was treasurer of the cemetery committee for many years. Rev. Canon Gordon Carryer conducted the funeral service which was held from his late residence on Sunday, March 23 at 2.30 p.m. to St. Mark's Church and cemetery The pallbearers were six nephews - Norman Barber, Ellwood Cameron, Beattie Timmins, Kenneth Mulligan, R. V. Cavanagh and Horace Cavanagh. The large number who assembled to pay respect to his memory was an evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held and the many floral tributes included florals from the International Harvester Co., the Maple Leaf Milling Co., St. Mark's Church and St. Mark's Cemetery Committee.  

Rev. J.  L. LeSage Says High Mass For His Father - ARNPRIOR, Aug. 29. - (Special) - Impressive and beautiful was the ritual of the Church this morning as Major the Rev. J. L. LeSage of Ottawa officiated at solemn requiem mass at the funeral of his father, Alexander LeSage, in the Church Of St. Peter Celestine, Pakenham. The celebrant was assisted by Msgr. John O'Neill of Ottawa as deacon and Rev. M. J. Mooney of Chelsea as sub - deacon, both former sons of the parish. Master of ceremonies was Rev. D . D. MacDonald of Ottawa . The church was crowded, in tribute to Pakenham's venerable citizen. The pastor of the parish Rev. George Larose, met the casket at the door of the church and during the solemn requiem at the main altar low masses were celebrated at the side altars by Rev. J. R. Dobell, vice - president of St. Augustine 's Seminary, Toronto , and Rev. J. R. Murray of Ottawa . Archbishop Vachon was represented by Rt. Rev. J. H. Chartrand, Vicar General of Ottawa archdiocese, and other clergy present were Rt. Rev. T. P. Fay, Rt. Rev. P. E. Brunet, Rev. Fathers J. R. Smith, T. A. Kemp, Alphonse O'Neill, A. J. Gorman, F. Included among the many spiritual and floral tributes were those from the Pakenham Curling Club of which the late Mr. LeSage had long been a foremost supporter, and the Department of Finance, Ottawa . The Pakenham choir was augmented by the presence of Rev. Father Moore of Ottawa, A. Ingram of St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, and R. A. Jeffrey, Arnprior.

Mrs. Thomas Tosh (1947) - The death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norman Gillan, Forester's Falls on Saturday, October 11 of Mrs. Thomas Tosh, an old and highly esteemed resident in her 91st year. She failed to rally from a stroke she received one month ago. Annie Dunlop was born at Pakenham, daughter of the late Charles Dunlop and his wife, Annie Houston. Sixty years ago she married Mr. Tosh of Pakenham and had resided here most of her life, except nine years at Renfrew, until the death of her husband ten years ago when she went to reside with her daughter. She was a member of St. Andrew's Church here and a valued member of the Missionary Society. Surviving are one son, Wm. Tosh of Ottawa and one daughter, Annie, Mrs. Norman Gillan; three grandchildren, Mrs. C. H. Loken of Ottawa, Mrs. Delmer Bennett and Miss Helen Gillan of Forester's Falls. Of a family of nine she is survived by one brother, Mr. Chas. Dunlop of Regina . The numerous floral tribute, included a sheaf from the WMS and WA of the church and the Women's Institute. The funeral service at her late home was held Monday, October 13th at I p.m. with interment in the Union cemetery, Pakenham. Rev. H. S. Cooke of Beachburg officiated. Pallbearers were Messrs. Stanley Groves, Harold Fishenden, Holly Smith, Wes Barber, Ernie Ritchie, Walter Scott.

Harvey Andrews (1947) - The death occurred at the R.M. hospital, Almonte, on Wednesday, October 15th of Harvey Andrews, a life long resident of this community, after one days illness. He was born 52 years ago on the ninth concession of Pakenham township, a son of the late Adam Andrews and his wife, Rebecca Thompson. Twenty - five years ago he married Gertrude Hunt of Pakenham, who survives, also two daughters, Edna, Mrs. Joseph Duffy of Almonte, and Margaret of Ottawa. Of a family of fourteen he is survived by five brothers and three sisters; William of McLeod, Alta.; Hugh of Oshawa, Sam of Alaska, Eddie of Sedrowoolley, Wash.; Gordon of California, Jennie, Mrs. J. E. Brown of Sedrawoolley; Martha, Mrs. Potter of Edmonton; Emma, Mrs. Dick Morris of Oshawa and Alex Barclay a foster son. Funeral service was held at his late home on Saturday, October 18th at 2 p.m. with Rev. H. A. Turner officiating. Out of town people attending were Hugh and Mrs. Dick Morris of Oshawa, Mr. and Mrs. L. Hamilton, Mr. and Mrs. E. Rathwell, Mr. and Mrs. T. Rathwell of Carleton Place; Miss Orma Morris of Oshawa, a nephew Adam Andrews of Chapleau, a nephew Reginald Andrews of Wrightville, Que.; Mrs. Ellard Farrell of Arnprior. Pallbearers were Messrs. Milton Lindsay, Wm. Wood, Ed. Ross, Emerson Dean, Abe McWatty and Jim Connery. Interment was in the Union ceme­tery, Pakenham.

Former Councillor Alexander Clarke Paid Final Honors (1947) - ARNPRIOR, Nov. 13. - (Special) - Residents from all parts of the Community today paid tribute to Alexander Clarke, who had lived here almost 60 years, had served as municipal councilor, and was prominent as a member and elder in the former Grace Methodist Church. Alex Clarke was a native of Fitzroy township, son of Irish pioneers, Thomas Clarke and his wife Mary Shannon. As a young man he went to Pakenham to learn the trade of blacksmith under the late John Givens and he followed that avocation until increasing years forced him to lay down his tools. It is more than half a century ago since he came to Arnprior to establish his business and shortly before that he was married to Agnes Tosh of Almonte, who died a little more than six years ago. They celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage in 1940. Mr. Clarke who was 89 years of age, retired from business in 1941, and went to live at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Holly Smith in Fitzroy where he died after a brief illness. Rev. H. Turner of Pakenham conducted services at the home and the Arnprior cemetery.

WILLIAM NOONAN (1927) - William Noonan, who had been in failing health for upward of two years, died on Monday in the Arnprior and District Memorial hospital, aged 62 years. He was born on the farm homestead of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Joseph Noonan, in Bathurst , member of a family who were and still are among the most prominent in Lanark county. As a young man Wm. Noonan moved to Pakenham and farmed there until about 25 years ago when he came to Arnprior to Make his home. A few years before coming here he was married by the late Rev. A. Chaine of Arnprior to Elizabeth Legree of the Clay Bank section of McNab township, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Legree. Mrs. Noonan survives as do, two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Frank Burns of Clandeboye, Ont., Mrs. Tims of Toronto . Ont., Patrick Noonan of South Roxton , Que., and John Noonan of St. Catherines. There are also four brothers and three sisters living, namely, George Noonan of Pakenham, Dr. Frank Noonan of Perth, Peter Noonan in Northern Ontario and Harry Noonan of Perth. The funeral took place Wednesday morning 29th inst., at 8.45 o'clock from the Convey Funeral Home to the R.C. Church and cemetery, Arnprior.

In St. Mark's church on Sunday afternoon an unusually large congregation met in remembrance of Pte. Arthur W. Fishenden, one of a very gallant family who gave his life for freedom's cause in Feb. Last. The following was the order of the service: Hymn 608, Rock of Ages. Sentence,, "I am the Resurrection, etc." Psalm 23 - 90. Lesson 1 Cor. Chap. 15, Verse 20. Hymn 593, When the tence, "Man this is born,"  "I heard a voice from heaven," etc.  Lesser Litany, Lord's Prayer, Col­lects. Hymn 562, Nearer My God to Thee.  Sermon - Text, Colossians, Chap. III, Verse IV. "When Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory." Offertory, Hymn 560, My God My Father While I Stray. God Save the King. Collects for Sailors and Soldiers. Benediction. Hymn 772, Safe in the Arms of Jesus. Dead March in Saul. The chief mourners of the family present at the service were Mrs. A. W. Fishenden and two little boys, Mr. Wm. Fishenden, and three sisters of deceased, Mrs. Prime of Carleton Place, Mrs. Mitchell of town and Miss M. Fishenden of Almonte, together with the absent ones, Mrs. Scott of Toronto, Mrs. T. Fishenden of Renfrew and three brothers in France whom have the sincerest sympathy of the community.

MRS. WILLIAM J. McDONALD (Sept 14, 1947) - PAKENHAM, Sept. 17 (Special) - The funeral of the late Mrs. William J. McDonald, whose death occurred at the Civic Hospital, Ottawa, last Sunday, after an illness of nine months' duration, was held from her residence, Pakenham village, to Andrew's United Church on  Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment  took place in the Union cemetery, Pakenham. Service at the church and graveside were conducted by the minister, Rev. Harold A. Turner. During the funeral service Mrs. C. H. Campbell sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Many beautiful floral tributes were received. The late Mrs. McDonald, formerly Miss Bella Jane Gunn, was born in Darling Township , daughter of the late George Gunn and his wife the former Jane Robertson. She was in her 64th year. She was one of a family of 13 children. About 35 years ago she married William J. McDonald at Balderson Corners, living for a time at Perth . Twenty four years ago she came to Pakenham village to reside. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church and a member of No. 2 Sewing Circle of the church. Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Miss Pearl McDonald, Ottawa, also two sisters, Mrs. James Ring, White Lake; Mrs. William Rintoul, Tatlock, eight brothers, Daniel Gunn, Almonte; James, Climax, Sask.; Alec, Arnprior; George, Clayton, Ont.; Bert, Brantford; Grant, Clayton, Ont.; Stewart, Winchester; Ernest Gunn of North Battleford, Sask.

Many Pay Tribute To Well Known Pakenham Resident At His Funeral (Aug 26, 1947) - Alexander LeSage, a native and lifelong resident of Pakenham, one of its oldest and most esteemed residents, and descendant of one of the pioneer families, died on Tuesday night, August 26th,  in his 91st year. Throughout his long and active life, Mr. LeSage always took a keen interest in matters of a community nature and was long an ardent curler. In recent years he instructed and coached many of the younger curlers of the district, in the game. He contributed much to the promotion of curling and to him goes much of the credit for the great interest which developed locally in it. Mr. LeSage was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph LeSage, who settled in Pakenham shortly before the birth of their son. Following his education in the local schools, he became a shoe merchant, continuing in that business until his retirement a few years ago. Mr. LeSage was married 65 years ago to Elizabeth McFarlane, of Pakenham, who died in 1941. He was particularly devoted to his church, his home and his family and in recent years derived much pleasure from his garden and his many friends. Throughout his life he had enjoyed particularly good health and last year took a trip to the Pacific Coast to visit his sons. Left to mourn are, five soils and one daughter: Rev. Leo. Le­Sage of South March, formerly of Ottawa , who served overseas as a padre; W. L. LeSage, Edward Le­Sage, and Alex LeSage, all of Van­couver; Lorne LeSage and Mrs. Bernard Sands, of Ottawa . The funeral took place in St. Peter Celestine Church, Paken­ham at 10 o'clock on Friday, Aug­ust 29th, and interment was in the Roman Catholic Cemetery at near­by Indian Hill.    

Mrs. Wm. J. McDonald - The death occurred in the Ottawa Civic hospital on Sunday. September 14 of Mrs. Wm. James McDonald, a highly esteemed resident of this village, who had been in ill health for the past nine months. Mrs. McDonald, who before her marriage was Bella Jane Gunn, daughter of the late Geo. Gunn and his wife Jane Robertson. She was born in Darling township, and was in her 64th year. Twenty - five years ago she married William James McDonald of Balderson and soon after came to reside in Pakenham where she lived until her death. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Pearl Isabel of Ottawa. Of a family of thirteen she is survived by eight brothers and two sisters - Daniel of Almonte, James of Climax Sask., Alex of Arnprior, George of Clayton, Bert of Brantford, Grant of Clayton, Ernie of North Battleford, Sask., Stewart of Winchester, Zelda, Mrs. Jas. Ring of White Lake; Janet, Mrs. Wm. Rintoul of Tatlock. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, among these were a wreath from a Rooming Group Ottawa, Staff Decorate of organization National Defence and Circle No. 2 of St. Andrew's Church, Pakenham. The funeral was held from her late residence to St. Andrew's Church at 2 p.m. where service was conducted by Rev. H. A. Turner. Pallbearers were four brothers, Daniel, Alex, Grant and Stewart Gunn, Allan McCann and Chas. Brown. Interment was in Union cemetery.    

ALEXANDER LeSAGE - Impressive and beautiful was the ritual of the church last Friday morning as Major the Rev. J. L. LeSage officiated at Solemn Requiem Mass at the funeral of his father, the late Alexander LeSage, in the church of St. Peter Celestine , Pakenham. The celebrant was assisted by Rt. Rev. Monsignor John O'Neill of Ottawa as deacon and Rev. M. J. Mooney of Chelsea as sub - deacon, both former sons of the parish. Master of Ceremonies was Rev. D. D. MacDonald of Ottawa and the church was crowded in tribute to Pakenham's venerable citizen. The pastor of the parish, Rev. George Larose, received the remains at the door of the church and during the Solemn Requiem at the main altar Low Masses were celebrated at the side altars by Rev. J. R. Dobell, vice president of St. Augustine 's seminary, Toronto , and Rev. J. R. Murray of Ottawa . His Grace Alexander Vachon was represented by Rt. Rev. J. T - T. Chartrand, vice general of Ottawa archdiocese and other clergy were present. At the Roman Catholic cemetery on Indian Hill Rev. Father LeSage recited the committal prayers and bearing the remains to their last resting place were Messrs. George Noonan, Daniel Smith, Edmund Coady, Gerard Cox, Lorne LeSage, Jr., and Leonard LeSage. Included among the many spiritual and floral tributes were those from the Pakenham Curling Club, of which the late Mr. LeSage had long been a foremost supporter, and the Department of Finance, Ottawa . The Pakenham choir was augmented by the presence of Rev. Father Moore, of Ottawa , A. Ingram of St. Augustine 's seminary, Toronto , and R. A. Jeffery, Arnprior.

In her 49th year, Mrs. McCann died early New Year's morning at her late residence after a lengthy illness. Born at Goshen in McNab township, she was educated at S.S. No. 3, McNab, Renfrew Collegiate Institute and Ottawa Normal School . Her eight years teaching included service at No. 2 Ross, No. 2 Fitzroy and No. 2 Pakenham. At the time of her marriage in 1925, her home was on the 3rd line of Fitzroy, to where the family had moved in 1918. Mrs. McCann is survived by her husband and two sons, Stewart and Keith of Pakenham; her mother, Mrs. Andrew Stewart of Pakenham; one sister, Miss Helen Stewart, Reg. N. of Northampton, Mass., and five brothers: Dr. John from Bellow's Falls, Vermont, Barclay and Lloyd from Kinburn, Dr. William from Waterfleit, N. Y., and Arthur from Almonte. Mrs. McCann had been an active worker in community affairs and particularly church organizations. Interment was made in the family plot In the United Church cemetery in Pakenham with service conducted by Rev. H. A. Turner. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. Pallbearers were Edgar McCann, John Early, Gordon Sadler, Dan Early, Stuart Fulton, Allan Early, all first cousins of the deceased. Among those attending from distance were an aunt, Miss Mina Early from Montreal and two cousins, Dan Early and Allan Early from Alton . During her illness she was constantly remembered by friends near and far and on her death many beautiful floral tri­butes were received which show­ed the appreciation of loving friends. For years she taught a class in Sunday school, was a valued member of the Woman's Association and gave unstintingly of her time and talents to the work of the Woman's Missionary Society. Besides holding various offices in the local auxiliary she was well known throughout Renfrew Presbyterial, through her work as Mission Band secretary with such efficiency, love and devotion did she fill this office that she was dearly beloved by all those who had contact with her and especially by the members of the executive. Her contribution to the work of the Presbyterial was so outstanding that after completing her term of office there she was asked to occupy the same office in the Branch which she did until forced by ill health to resign.

J. C. Fulton (Nov 21, 1947) - Tribute to the memory of John C. Fulton was paid when many friends from this community and outside points attended his funeral which was held from his late home Saturday afternoon, November 22, at 2 p.m. Rev. H. A. Turner conducted the burial services. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jas. Currie, Stewart Currie, Herb Stanley, Leonard Fulton, Lorne Melanson, Jack Towey. Numerous floral offerings were in evidence. Interment was in the Union cemetery, Pakenham. The late Mr. Fulton was born at Cedar Hill on the farm where he spent his entire life, 54 years ago, son of the late Thomas Fulton and his wife, Marion Reid and was an only child. Twenty - eight years ago he married Effie Melanson, who survives with two sons and one daughter, Arthur of Appleton, Helen of Kinburn and Raymond on the homestead. Mr. Fulton and family had spent Thursday evening at a birthday party, had motored, home feeling as well as usual, ten minutes after he retired he passed away with a heart condition.

Mr. and Mrs. John Comba Die Within 9 Hours of Each Other - RENFREW, Jan. 18. - (Staff) - Five months before celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. John Comba, resi­dents here since 1915, died within nine hours of each other at Victoria Hospital, Saturday morning. Mr. Comba, town foreman for the past 15 years, entered hospital January 10, after being in failing health for a period of seven weeks. He died in the early hours of Saturday morning, while Mrs. Comba (Margaret Lynch), who had been ill for one year, died shortly after 11 o'clock . A double funeral service will be held from the Comba Opeongo street residence Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock . Rev J. W. Houston, of Trinity St. Andrews United Church , will officiate at the joint service. Burial will be in Thomsonville cemetery. Married in Pakenham, the couple would have commemorated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 15. Mr. Comba was in his 73rd year, while Mrs. Comba celebrated her 73rd birthday New Year's Day. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Comba, Mr. Comba was born in Pakenham, where he received his early education. For a number of years he was employed by the McLachlin Lumber Mill at Arnprior and later engaged in farming in the Palmer Rapids area. In 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Comba moved to Renfrew. He was em­ployed by the late W. A. Moore, of Renfrew, before accepting a position with the corporation as town foreman. Born in Carleton Place , Mrs. Comba was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lynch. Mr. and Mrs. Comba were par­ishioners of Trinity St. Andrews United Church . Surviving are six sons, Delbert and Carl, both of Renfrew; C. I., of Sudbury; Kenneth, of Copper Cliff; Irvin, of Falconbridge, and John, of Niagara Falls;  two daughters, Mrs. Ross Mason of Renfrew, and Mrs. Howard Redtman, of Arnprior. Also surviv­ing are 17 grandchildren. A brother and sister of Mr. Comba survive, George and Annie, both of Pakenham. Mrs. Comba has one sister, Mrs. Archie Byron, of Almonte.

Margaret M. Tait (1948) - The death occurred at Rosamond Memorial hospital Almonte on Saturday, May 1st of Margaret MacDougall Tait of Pakenham, in her 75th year, after a lengthy illness. She was a daughter of the late Alex H. Tait and his wife, Mary A. Quigley. Of a family of three she is survived by one sister, Mary Belle of Brockville and a niece, Mrs. B. J. Howard of Toronto , She was a faithful member and attendant of St. Andrew's United Church , and an active worker in Red Cross Society in both of which she will be greatly missed. The funeral was held Monday, May 3rd from the home of Mrs. G. E. Wilson, a life long friend to St. Andrew's United Church for service, with interment in the Union cemetery. Numerous floral offerings were received and many friends attended from outside points, Rev. H. A. Turner officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Preston Burgess, Lance Downey, Fred Dickson. William Scott, Aldred Blair, Alex Wood.    

Impressive Tribute In Dual Funeral. - RENFREW, Jan. 20. - (Staff) - Corporation employees joined numerous friends in paying impressive tribute Monday afternoon to Mr. and Mrs. John Comba, whose death occurred within nine hours of each other at Victoria Hospital, Saturday morning. JOHN CURRAN (Dec 14, 1947) - People of this community in large numbers paid tribute to one of the oldest citizens of this district at the funeral on Sunday afternoon of John Curran, who throughout most of his long life was a resident of Arnprior, but in later years made his home in Pakenham. Mr. Curran was the son of pioneer parents who came from Ireland and carved for themselves a homestead in Fitzroy, today a township of great agricultural worth. His parents were Michael Curran and Mary Jane Costello and in that home in the forest he was born 93 years ago. There in the first schools of the district and at his mother's knee he was educated and while still a young man he came to Arnprior to engage with McLachlin Bros., continuing with them until they discontinued their lumbering business. Twenty years ago he moved with his wife to Pakenham to reside at the home of his brother - in - law, G. A. Harvey. He was twice married, first to Miss Margaret McMahon, who died here in 1884; then in 1908 to Miss Minnie Harvey of Pakenham, who survives with one adopted daughter, Mrs. Cyril Turcotte of Arnprior. The only surviving member of the original family is one sister, Mrs. Timothy Mulvihill, sr., of Arnprior. Another sister, Mrs. John Mulvihill, died here some years ago. In failing health for some months, due to the weight of years, Mr. Curran passed away hospital. The funeral took place from the Convey Funeral Home to the Church of St. John Chrysostom here with Very Rev. Dean Warnock chanting the Libera and interment was made in the R.C. cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews; C. A. Mulvihill, K.C., T. C. Mulvihill, J. P. Mulvihill, W. A. Whyte, all of Arnprior, John Mulvihill of Ottawa and W. L. Mulvihill of Pembroke.

OBITUARY - CECIL ROBERT RITCHIE (1948) - Cecil Ritchie passed away suddenly on Monday morning, June 14th, in his car on returning home from driving his son to school. He had been about his farm work as usual and his death was great loss and shock to the community. He was of a very cheery disposition and everybody's friend. Mr. Ritchie was in his 55th year, the eldest son of the late Evans Ritchie and Annie Ferguson. In 1924 he married Beatrice Meredith of North Gower, who survives, also a, daughter Marion, Mrs. Grenville Pierce of Pakenham; one son Allan; one sister, Anna, Mrs. Robert Spees of Vancouver, B.C.; two brothers, Mort Ritchie of Arnprior and Dr. James E. Ritchie of Cobden. The funeral was held from his residence on Wednesday, June 16th at 2.30 p.m. to St. Mark's Anglican Church. Rev. Canon Carryer conducted the service. The funeral was one of the largest seen in the community for a long time, and was attended by friends from Ottawa, Richmond, North Gower, Pickering, White Lake, Arnprior, Renfrew, Cobden, Pembroke, Fitzroy Harbour, Carp, Kinburn Pallbearers were - Walter Bradley, Harold Blair, Craig Johnston, Jack Lesway, Willie Barr and Armistice Pierce. JOHN REGAN (June 25, 1948) - A farmer at Pakenham, where he was born, John Regan, passed away at his home there on Friday of last week. He was a bachelor and leaves to mourn him a brother and a sister, both residents in Pakenham. They are Gerald Regan and Mrs. A. J. McWatty. Born on April 17, 1886 , Mr. Regan was a son of the late John Regan and Bridget Foy, of Pakenham township. He received his education there and later at Arnprior before commencing to farm. Eight years ago Mr. Regan, in partnership with his brother Gus, took over the Wayside Inn which he operated until his sickness two weeks ago. Of a genial disposition he will be missed by his many friends. The funeral was held on Monday from his late residence with a service at St. Peter Cel­estine Church of which he was a devout member. Interment was made in Indian Hill cemetery. Requiem high mass was chanted by Rev. Father Larose. Among the numerous floral and spiritual tributes were two sprays from the town boys. Pallbearers were, Wm. Connors, Abe McWatty, Wm. McKibbin, George Comba, Lance Downey, Joseph Legree Friends attended from Ottawa , Hopetown. Lanark, Braeside, Arnprior, Almonte and district.

Pakenham and District Pay Tribute To Esteemed Citizen Allan Elliott Wilson (1945) - Tribute was paid to the memory of one of Pakenham's foremost citizens on Saturday afternoon when people from all parts of the countryside assembled there for the funeral of Allan Elliott Wilson, who died at his home in Pakenham on Thursday last after having been ill for one month. Mr. Wilson was the Worshipful Master of Madawaska Lodge, A.F. and A.M., Arnprior, at the time of his death. He was also president and a motivating force in Pakenham Curling Club and had been active in Pakenham's St. Andrew's United Church , serving for a time as a member of the Board of Stewards, in fact anything and everything pertaining to the good or progress of the community enlisted his general support. Born in Fitzroy township 51 years ago, he was the son of the late Mr. John J. E. Wilson and his wife, Minerva Miller. In 1920 he was married to Miss Florence Scott, of Pakenham, and four years later they moved to their present home on the outskirts of Pakenham village. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Miss Margaret Wilson; one son, Pilot Officer J. A (Bert) Wilson; and a sister; Mrs. T. Edgar Wilson of Vancouver , B.C. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from his late home to St. Andrew's United church, the pastor, Rev. H. A. Turner officiating. Madawaska Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Arnprior had charge of the service under direction of Past Master J. C. MacDonald and Chaplain R. H. Laughlin, accompanied by members of the order from Almonte. Pallbearers were Donald Caldwell, Russell Andrews, H. Stanley Groves, W. P. Wilson, W. E. Ritchie and J. T. H. Gordon. Interment was in the Pakenham United cemetery.  

William J. Drummond (1948) - The death occurred suddenly at his home at Prospect Park , Pa. on Tuesday, January 13th, of William J. Drummond, an old and highly esteemed resident. Mr. Drummond was born at Clayton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Drummond and was in his 78th year. He was an accounting employee for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 39 years retiring four years ago. He was a mason, a member of the Old Timers Club and of the Fire Company of Prospect Park . Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Flora May Lowe, two sons and two daughters. Of a family of three, he is survived by one brother, John F. Drummond of Renfrew, who was present at the funeral which was held on Friday.

GREGOR ALEX. MacGREGOR (1948) - One of the most outstanding auctioneers in this area for a forty - five years, and a familiar figure with all who knew him, passed on last Sunday. It was with sincere regret that his many friends learned of the death of Alec MacGregor, at the home of his son - in - law , Mr. Fred Shaw Hugh street ,  Arn­prior, following a brief illness. Born 83 years ago in Pakenham township, the late Mr. P. MacGregor was a son of Gregor and Christina MacGregor and farmed in that township until moving to Arnprior about twenty years ago. Sixty-one years ago he married Martha Martin, who deceased him in 1931. They had a family of four sons and five daughters. Two sons, J. P. and F. M. MacGregor predeceased and surviving are; J. K. McGregor of Lethbridge, Alta., Dr. S. A. MacGregor, Toronto, and his daughters; Mrs. Fred Shaw of Arnprior, Mrs. R. H. Stewart of Winnipeg, Mrs. J. H. Steele of Ottawa, Mrs. W. J. Morgan of Hamilton, and Mrs. Enos David of Belleville. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the residence of his son - in - law to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with Rev. Alexander Mills officiating. Interment was made in Pakenham Union cemetery. Six nephews, John and Andrew McNab, Elmer Moore, Jack  and Gordon Martin, and James  Johnston were the pallbearers. WILLIAM ALBERT FLOYD (1948) - Friends from far and near gathered at the home of W. A. Fulton, Pakenham to pay their last respects to one of the oldest citizens of the community who passed away peacefully on Saturday night, February 14th. The deceased sustained a fractured hip some four weeks ago, from the shock of which he never recovered. Friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. John Morphy of Cobden, Mr. Joe Morphy of Renfrew, Mr. W. E. McNeely, Mrs. J. Hawkins, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Cameron, Mr., and Mrs. Archie Cameron, Mrs. J. A. Bowland, Mr. and Mrs. W. Morphy of Carleton Place. The pallbearers were Leonard Fulton, Marshall Cameron, John Girouard, John Early, John Ostler and John McNab. Included in the floral offerings were sprays from the Session and Board of Managers of Almonte Presbyterian Church and Cedar Hill W.I.

EARL BREMNER CAMPBELL (Feb 23, 1947) - His large circle of friends, and indeed the whole community, grieved to hear of the death of Earl Bremner Campbell, at his home, 4th line of Pakenham, White Lake , on Monday. Mr. Campbell was in his sixty - fifth year and had not been ill. He attended church as usual the previous day. A farmer all his life, he was born on the farm where he died, a son of James Campbell and Jessie Stewart. On June 24th, 1908, he married the former Elizabeth Ann Stewart at her home at Waba, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. James Miller. Earl Campbell was a hardworking member of the community who served faithfully and for many years in public life. He was superintendent of White Lake United Church Sunday School, a member of Pakenham council, official board member of the church and an elder, and secretary - treasurer of Union School Section 5 and 6. Besides his wife, Mr. Campbell is survived by one son Robert James, who resides on the farm, and three daughters; Mrs. Alex Snedden of Almonte, Mrs. Donald Scott and Mrs. Sam Cunningham Jr. of, White Lake . Mrs. Louise Devine of Moose Jaw and Mrs. Elpha McNaughton of Perth are sisters and three brothers - Stewart and Murray Campbell of Moose Jaw and Dr. Lorne Campbell, Clear Lake , Wisconsin , complete the immediate family. The funeral was held from Mr. Campbell's late residence, to White Lake cemetery Wednesday afternoon with Rev. A. E. Jaster conducting the service. Pallbearers were Bernard Wilson, Lilburn Wilson, Wilfred Beck, Ermel Bole, Russell Headrick and Oliver Headrick.

Former Pakenham Resident Now 104 - Henry Timlick, a native of Pakenham, last Sunday, March 14th, celebrated his 104th birthday in the Winnipeg nursing home in which he has lived for the last two years. Mr. Timlick does not like to be referred to as "old". He'd rather you'd say he was "getting on". He went west in 1881 to St. Jean Baptiste, 48 miles south of Winnipeg . Later he began farming at Newbridge. Of his ten children, five still are living. One of Mr. Timlick's uncles lived to be 108.

WILLIAM HUNT (Jan 28, 1948) - Impressive tribute to the memory of William Hunt, who died on Thursday morning at the home of his son, W. Aubrey Hunt, Pakenham, was paid Saturday afternoon at his funeral, which was held from his home to St. Andrew's United Church . Services at the church, and graveside were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Harold A. Turner. Included in the numerous floral offerings were tributes from Lorenz Schruder Co. Inc., Queen Village , New York , Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Parsons, Detroit Among those who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Brown, Detroit , Richard of Floral Park, N. Y., Stanley of Toronto, also friends from Quyon, Smiths Falls , Ottawa , Arnprior, Almonte and surrounding district. Pallbearers were Messrs. Erwin Boyle, Henry Hudson, Fred Hutchison, T. S. Shaw, William Connors and George Comba. Interment was made in the Union cemetery. Mr. Hunt, who would have observed his 94th birthday on February 9, this year, was born in Fitzroy township, son of the late Robert Hunt and his wife, the former Ellen Latimer on September 5, 1854 . He married sixty years ago, the former Sarah Ann May, who predeceased him in 1930. To them was born a family of eleven children, five of whom survive. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. R. J. Brown, Detroit, Mich.; four sons, W. Aubrey Hunt, Pakenham; Percy Hunt, North Battleford, Sask.; Richard Hunt, Floral Park, N. Y., and Stanley Hunt, Toronto, He was a blacksmith by trade and a member of St. Andrew ' s United Church , Pakenham. About 27 years ago, he went to Pakenham to reside. He is the last member of a family of eight children.
