'CROSS
TOWN (Aug 30, 1957)
- Devoted Telephone Man Was Arnold
G. Timmins
- By Austin F. Cross Citizen Staff
writer
- One of the most pleasant men I ever
knew died the other day. He was Arnold G. Timmins, formerly of
Ottawa
, and more recent of
Montreal
. So universally was he known as
"Tim" that I imagine few when living identified him by his Christian
name, Arnold.
"Tim" spent most of his life in and around
Ottawa
, but he was born in Pakenham, and he lived
the last 11 years in
Montreal
. Officially he was Bell Telephone staff engineer in charge of toll
projects and defence co-ordination. But his love of and Interest in telephones
went far beyond that. I always said that, if my cousin the former Lorena Cross,
his wife, ever had cause to sue for alienation of affections, she would have to
name as co-respondent, the telephone company. He ate and slept and dreamed of
phones.
I never saw a man so wrapped up in his work. Keen a bridge player as Tim was,
you could get him away from the card table merely by mentioning toll dialing, or
a seven pull system, or some other - to him - enchanting project. Away would go
Tim on the principle of the phone, and the bridge game went down the drain till
we cleaned up the communications system.
Once Tim disgraced himself in the eyes of his wife at
Dominion
Church
. They were seated down near - the front where apparently the hard of
hearing had some hearing aids. Tim promptly put one on. The preacher did not
come through clearly. Tim shook the machine, while his wife blushed, he
desecrated the Sabbath in church by trying to do repairs then and there in the
midst of the preacher's homiletic eloquence. But Tim was the incurably curious
phone man.
Let it not be thought either that he was not a good bridge player. He played by
the book but he exacted no such discipline from his partner. He smiled
pleasantly at your biffs, he laughed off your boneheads. Bridge was just a game,
and it was all fun, after all.
Obviously, such a man was marked for the top. But an suspectedly bad heart ended
everybody's plans. Even on his deathbed, he wise-cracked about his successive
attacks.
He had many friends who admired him for many things. But as long as I live, I
can never forget Tim's whimsical little smile.
