Palmer—Died, in Bathurst on Monday, 23rd August, Minnie Wilson Palmer, daughter of Alex Palmer, aged 2 years, 6 months and 8 days.

Fold the cold hands closely,

Lay them gently on her breast,

For our darling Minnie’s left us,

Gone to mingle with the Blessed.

Lay the golden hands so fondly

Down beside the dimpled cheek;

And then close the sweet lips comely—

N’er on earth we’ll hear her speak.

But in heaven, we’ll hear her singing,

Midst the glorious angel throng,

Singing songs of joy and gladness

With the seraphs around the Throne.

Oh! ‘Twas hard to lay our darling

Neath the cold and silent sod;

But we know that her pure spirit;

Has ascended to her God.

Yes, we know the angels took her

To a minion built on high

Bore the little spirit gladly

To her home beyond the sky.

Death in Gaol—An old man named John Manioner died in Perth Gaol last Monday from apoplexy at the age of 91 years.  Deceased had been confined in the gaol as a vagrant for the past ten years and latterly was quite helpless, especially after losing an arm a few years ago to cancer.  He formerly lived near the town line of Bathurst and Sherbrooke near Christy’s Lake.  On Tuesday an inquest was held on the remains by Dr. Kellock, Coroner, and the verdict rendered was that the deceased died from apoplexy brought on by old age and weakness.

Melancholy Accident—It is our painful duty to record the death from supposed drowning of one of the oldest subscribers to the Courier, Mr. John Mitchell.  The deceased left his home on Monday, 17th Jan., to go and cull some saw-logs for several persons on the Addington Road who were taking them out for J.J. Playfair. Esq., of Bathurst.  He had proceeded on his journey as far as Marina Lake in the Township of Barrie which was open in places at the time and judging from the time he was last seen, it must have been dark when he got to this lake which he had to cross to reach his destination and mistaking the open water for ice in the darkness, he must have walked into the water and drowned.  His family thought him at work until about 10 days ago when an immediate search was made but up to this time his body has not been recovered.  The deceased was about 60 and leaves a wife and large family.

Sad Accident—On Monday last the seven year old daughter of Mr. Thomas Bourke, brewer, Smith’s Falls, met her death under very peculiar circumstances.  She was descending the stairs carrying a tumbler in her hand when she tripped and fell, the edge of the tumbler coming in contact with the neck and severing the jugular vein.  Before three minutes she was dead.  Dr. Anderson arrived within ten minutes of the accident but the vital spark had fled.

Cram—Died, at Perth, on Sunday evening the 30th April, of Pysemic Fever, Nettie McPhail Cram, daughter of Peter, aged 14 years and 8 months.

(Further on Nettie Cram from the May 12 newspaper) Died of Pysemic Fever, Nettie McPhail Cram, 14 years and 8 months—The subject of the foregoing brief obituary record passed to her eternal rest before she had completed her 15th birthday.  Summoned to the better life beyond the tomb she has left behind her many schoolmates who mourn her untimely death with all the freshness and fervor of genuine sincerity characteristic of the young.  We could not help participating in the sorrow of her associates who stood beside the coffin which held their dead companion as silent and solemn she lay in that last sleep which knows no waking even until the eternal morning and we sympathize with those tears of grief and affection that started unbidden to the eyes of stranger and friend while we thought to ourselves “Alas! For love if this were all and nought beyond  this vale of tears.”  Poor Nettie was cut down on the verge of womanhood even at a time when her character was fast ripening into uncommon loveliness.  Yet withal the conviction remains with those who knew her best that the early blossom has merged into a full blown flower transplanted unto a higher sphere.  During her last illness, while bearing much, she still hoped that she might be spared to remain for a longer sojourn with those she loved and with whom she was so happy but alas nothing is certain in this transitory life of ours.  Day by day the disease gradually asserted the mortal prerogative and in a brief period her delicate bloom withered.  Yet on the very verge of existence her intellectual clearness became only at brief intervals clouded.  Even when the shadow of the dark valley enveloped her she still expressed anxiety for those around her and finally without a murmur or struggle she passed away leaving as a legacy a memory that ever will remain green in the hearts of those who loved her.

Her young face shown with happiness

And love beamed in her eye

Alas! We never thought that one

So young so good must die.

Submissively she bore each pain

Until the angel passed

And took from her a wicked world

Home to Heaven at last.

We should not weep when God has said

Enter into my rest.

But Joy that Nettie rests in heaven

Upon her Saviour’s breast.

Thanks to the Almighty God

For Jesus Christ his Son

Who taught her while on earth to pray

Thy Will, Oh God, be done!   M.M.

Almonte:  Little Girl Drowned—A very sad case of drowning occurred here on the evening of Friday last.  It appears that the two little girls of Lawrence Maher had been playing about the river behind Metcalfe’s Shingle Mill for a good part of the afternoon.  The younger sister of the two went home unaccompanied by her sister.  After a diligent search of a couple of hours under the thick coating of driftwood and mill refuse which covers the dam, the body of the little thing was found washed up against the flume rack and completely hidden by the rubbish.  It is supposed that the surviving child had been playing at some distance from the shore when the other fell into the river and there is little doubt that what the child took to be a dog floating about in the water was nothing else than her sister.  The victim of this misfortune was a handsome and interesting child about six years of age and it is untimely and is a great blow to the parents who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
