BATHURST COURIER - 1834 - 1839.

Transcriber’s Note:  When I started this project, I had no plan.  When I started doing transcriptions paper by paper, I just did deaths.  For these early years, 1834-1839, there was very little local news and even fewer birth, marriage and death announcements.  I have gone back and recaptured what few births, marriages and not already transcribed deaths I could find.  Along the way, I have picked up what probably appears to be non consequential information but early information is so scarce in Canada that sometimes it is helpful just to be able to find out where one’s ancestor was at a given point in time. If there are large gaps between issues below it just means there was either nothing at all in the papers or the papers were not there.  There are large gaps sometimes between issues of these early editions.  In these early days, this paper was called the Bathurst Courier and Ottawa Advertiser.  Apparently it later became the Perth Courier.

Bathurst Courier, June 19, 1835

My mother has been for many years among the glorified in Heaven, her look, her manner, her tones of voice are embalmed in my memory.  The most distinct impression of these ever made and the one which is still the most vivid in my eye was implanted when I was quite small.  I cannot readily tell how old I was perhaps six or seven.  The circumstances are fresh in my recollections as if they had occurred yesterday.  It was a cool evening in autumn—the fire burned briskly on the old kitchen hearth.  My mother sat in the corner of the fire place, at the right, and just upon her left hand I had seated myself upon the last stone hearth in front of the fire; after watching me for some time she dropped her knitting in her lap and in a mellow subdued tone such as mothers only can use she said “My child I wish I could see you as much engaged in serving your God as you are at play”.  She said not another word but it went directly to my heart—I turned around and shyly wiped a tear from my eye.  My heart even then had pride enough to prompt a wish to conceal my tears yet the arrow remained in my bosom and the scene upon the kitchen hearth was never driven from my mind.  In all the folly of childhood and wildness of youth it returned at intervals to haunt my soul.  I seldom think of her except in connection with that scene, the fixed look of her blue eyes, her look, her mellow and subdued tone, her very gesture as she dropped her knitting in her lap—are all present to my eye.  After the lapse of more than a quarter of a century I have to drop a tear as I think of that day.

Between 6:00 and 8:00 this morning a gale was experienced from the south east upon Lake St. Peter’s, so violent that four rafts have been completely broken up and caused the loss of 25 lives.  One raft of red and white pine was wrecked from which 12 men were lost among whom were two brothers of Mr. Raymond.  Another raft, property of Messrs. Rodger and Thompson of Perth was this morning found scattered upon the beach and all of the crew of 13 in number perished.  8 of the latter crew were found this morning upon the shore at this place in an awful state of mutilation among whom was the pilot Jeremiah Campbell, one of the oldest and most experienced pilots on the river.  Another raft, property of Messrs Porter Gemmell and Cameron of Perth is a complete wreck but the crew are all safe.  Another raft of red pine owned by Mr. Thompson and brother is likewise broken up, no lives lost and the timber may be saved.

Lanark, 29 Nov., 1836--On Sunday last a body of a man was found lying near a barn in a field belonging to John McLaren about a mile and a half from this village.  It proved to be that of Michael McKittrick, a farmer whose place of residence was about two miles distant.  It appears that he had been in the village on the evening previous which he left about 7:00 in the evening with the intention of going home but as he had been drinking spirits previous—although he did not appear to be the worse for it—yet it is supposed that the cold had seized him after he went out and that he had become bewildered and wandered off his road to the place where his body was found.  An inquest was held on the body on Monday at 2:00 pm and J. Hall, Esq., one of His Majesty’s Coroner’s for the District of Bathurst and the jury returned a verdict “that the deceased came to his death from the effects of the cold and ardent spirits”.

Drowned, on Sunday morning last from off the Steamboat Cataraque about 15 miles from Oliver’s Ferry, John Dean, the stewart of the boat.  The deceased was not missed nor was any one aware of the unfortunate incident until something was wanted from the bar, when an immediate search was made on board the boat but in vain.  It was then that the truth became manifest.  The steamboat retraced her curse a few miles when at first the hat was found with the garment all tattered and torn from which, it was supposed that the deceased was inadvertently observing the gyrations of the paddle wheel from the door and the entrance to it was caught by either some part of his clothes or body and carried with it.  The victim was a native of Ireland and was about 17 years of age and for some time was a bar keeper to William Matheson’s inn in this place where he had conducted himself with the utmost sobriety and steadiness.  The grief of the helpless parents who reside here is beyond our power to describe but may be imagined when it is considered that the deceased was an only son upon whom they entirely depended for their worldly subsistence.

On Friday last an attempt to commit rape of a very atrocious nature took place in the township of Fitzroy.  A young woman named Helen Taylor who resides in the township of Ramsay was traveling from there towards Fitzroy Harbor.  On her way she stopped at Andrew Forbes’ tavern to get dinner where, it appears, an Irishman named Michael Fox asked her to drink with him but she refused.  On pursuing her journey she had not gone two miles when Fox came up and demanded that she would instantly comply with the most unlawful request, which she refused upon which he began to abuse her in a most un-human nature.  He dragged her by the hair of the head—tore her clothes almost to tatters—and inflicted several wounds on her face and arms.  Being a woman of considerable strength she resisted until from wounds received and loss of blood she was almost overcome when providentially John O’Donnell came up on horseback upon seeing whom Fox fled.  The other gave chase and overtook Fox who attempted to give battle with O’Donnell but O’Donnell gave him practical proof that he had met with more than his match—he took Fox and brought him to Fitzroy Harbor where after in investigation before the magistrates the charge against Fox was proved.  He was committed to the gaol in Perth to take his trial at the ensuing Assizes.  The exertion of John O’Donnell on this occasion deserves the greatest commendation.  Had it not been for him there is every reason to believe that Fox (who was intoxicated) after having accomplished his purposes would have completed the tragedy.

On Friday afternoon in the Rideau, Oliver’s Ferry, John Oliver, son of William Oliver, aged about 10 or 12 years, was drowned.  It appears that the deceased and an elder brother had been repairing a skiff during the day and the boy being anxious to try it out went out into the river without either paddle or oars.  The wind being high, the skiff went further from the shore than was expected.  The anxiety of the poor boy became so great that in his exertions to get to the shore the skiff upset and not being able to swim the boy sank to rise no more.  The body was found the following day and was interred on Sunday.

Bathurst Courier, Feb. 15, 1839

Origin of the word ‘Canada’—The name of Canada according to Sir John Borrow originated in the following circumstance:  When the Portugese under Gaspar C - - ereal in the year 1500 first ascended the great River St. Laurence they believed it was the strait of which they were in search and through which a passage might be discovered into the Indian Sea, but on arriving at a point whence they closely ascertain that it was not a strait but a river.  They, with all the emphasis of disappointed hopes exclaimed repeatedly “Canada!” (here is nothing) which words were remembered and repeated by the natives on seeing other Europeans arriving in 1534 who naturally conjectured that the words they heard employed so often must denote the name of the country.

On Sunday night last the stable and barn of James Beverage of Bathurst were accidentally destroyed by fire—also about one ton of hay, four horses and one cow with a set of harness and other articles.  We regret to learn that Mr. Beverage has of late years been particularly unfortunate in the loss of cattle and had barely surmounted the difficulties attending it when the above occurrence took place.

The unfortunate individual Leslie is no more, having died from the effects of his wound Sunday night.  An inquest found John Dean is guilty of willful murder.

Transcriber’s note:  no more information on this other than the above of in previous paper, but a detailed copy of the doctor’s report is printed, only partially transcribed here.  For further details on what happens to poor Leslie, see future editions.

Doctor’s notes in part read:  On Tuesday evening, 23rd July, I was called in great haste to attend John Lesly who had just been stabbed by his father-in-law John Dean with a shoemaker’s knife.  On my arrival I found him faint from loss of blood and upon examination found a wound about an inch in length between the 6th and 7th rib on the left side…..on the day following he became very feverish and that formidable enemy inflammation was making rapid progress…..on the 2nd day he was much better and gave us great hopes for his recovery and we closed the wound with adhesive plaster……he became much worse toward night and the next day he became delirious…..he lingered until night and death closed his sufferings at 10:00 pm.

Archibald McNee, an industrious and wealthy farmer of this place had a reaping bee on Friday last which was truly a grand rural spectacle.  There were 60 in attendance—lads and lasses—and in about 7 hours work a field of near 16 acres of wheat was in that short space of time cut down and bound.  Competition was great but the mead of praise is due to the females alone who certainly outvied the men in both reaping and binding.  This speaks a great deal for the esteem in which Mr. McNee is held by his countrymen—but it looks clannish.

On Tuesday last a young man named Donald Anderson met with an accident by which his life is despaired of.  On stopping at a house about six miles out on the Drummond Road and having a spirited horse it is thought that in dismounting the animal took fright and brought the unfortunate young man a considerable distance trailing on the ground with one foot fastened in the stirrup.  When found he was senseless and still remains so in a very helpless state.  Thursday evening:  The young man has since died.

Died, at Fitzroy on the 25th Aug., last, Eliza Evans Richey, wife of John Richey, Esq., aged 48, of apoplexy.

Owing to the haste in preparing an account of the trial of John Dean for our last paper, several errors remain uncorrected.  The jury were not out more than an hour and a half before the verdict.  James Coldman, for misdemeanor, was the only other prisoner tried who was found guilty and sentenced to three month’s imprisonment.  (note, nothing could be found about this trial in the previous issue.)

The undersigned have received a power of attorney from Simon F. Robertson, Esq., late Clerk of the Court of Requests authorizing them to collect all debts due him hereby not all to whom this may concern that unless the same are immediately paid he will be compelled to sue them in the regular course of the law.

On Sunday morning last a Dragoon arrived here from Kingston with a pardon for John Dean whose punishment is commuted to Transportation for Life to Botany Bay instead of death according to the sentence.  It appears that it was through the appeal of the wife of Dean who recently got up a petition and proceeded to Toronto together with the favorably timing at which she arrived there (when the Prescott and other convicts were about to be sent to transportation) that Sir Arthur George was induced to spare the life of the old grey headed criminal and ship him also with the others.  Accordingly on Friday morning last he was put on board one of the Rideau boats which had 81 other convicts on board for Botany Bay.

Died, at the house of his brother, in this town (London, U. C.) on Tuesday last at 2:00 in the morning aged (illegible, maybe 20?) Harris William Hales Fraser, youngest son of James Fraser, Esq., late of Perth, now of Newport in the District of Talbot, after a sickness of ten days.  The disease which terminated his life was overexertion in the cause of his country ever since the outbreak of the rebellion in 1837.  As soon as McKenzie took possession of Navy Island, he hurried to the spot and was there actively engaged under the command of Capt. McKenzie of this township, he had charge of the 12 gun battery.  He afterwards joined Capt. Wilson of the Royal Artillery and served under his command on the St. Clare front until their services were no longer required.  He next joined Hon. J. Elmsley when he was ordered to lay a crew for service on Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair and lastly he joined the Simcoe troop of cavalry.
