Obit for Mr

Obit for Mr. C. Rivett - April 06.1906

Another of Almonte’s older residents has been called away, this time in the person of Mr. Christmas Rivett, whose demise took place on Monday, he having reach the age of 75 years. The deceased was born in England and came to Canada when eight years of age. The early years of his life were spent in North Gower until about thirty years ago, when he came to Almonte. Before coming to Almonte he was married to Ann Carr and to them a family of five children, three sons and two daughters, were born. The eldest son died at the age of eleven years from an injury received while employed in a mill. The others are Mrs. John Ward, Mrs. H. Owrid, Messrs. L.H. and Elias Rivett of town. Mrs. Rivett died three years ago last December. A brother of the deceased, Wm. Rivett, died a few months ago, aged 87 years and two sisters are still living, who are over 80 years. They are Mrs. Broom of Cobden and Mrs. McEwen of North Gower. The deceased was a shoemaker by trade, an occupation he has followed even in recent years. For the past eight years he has made him home at Mr. H. Owrid’s, with his wife until her death and has here enjoyed comforts in his declining years. He was a member of the Methodist church and a regular attendee at services until failing strength debarred him. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the eight line cemetery.

Going West - April 06.1906

The Rivett brothers - L.H. and Elias, with Lorne and Roy Barr, sons of Messrs: Thos. and John Barr, respectively, of Hall’s Mills, loaded a car of effects for the Northwest this week. They took along six horses and other outfit required. Mr. Lem Rivett left on Tuesday with the car. Messrs. Alex. Dunlop, Wm., Hugh and Charles McIntyre. Austin and Wm. Finlayson are also going out to the same place and are taking their families. The whole party is going to locate between Saskatchewan and Battleford, where Messrs. Harry Davis and Clarence Barr are already living. They will be about five miles from the C.N. Railway, the nearest station being Fielding, but as there is an intervening river that place can only be reached in winter. Their nearest summer station is Langham, thirty miles distant. An effort is being made to induce the government to grant aid for the construction of a ferry to Fielding, which is likely to be successful, as a large number of settlers are going into that district. Mr. Elias Rivett and the balance of the party leave on Sunday.
