Mrs. Barbara Scott is killed in two-car collision Friday afternoon

The Ashton community was thrown into shock with the tragic death of one of best known residents, Mrs. Barbara Scott, last Friday. Mrs. Scott, 37, died suddenly when she was involved in a two-car collision near Prescott last Friday afternoon.

The first snow storm of the year which hit last Friday afternoon, made driving conditions hazardous, causing the two car collision which took the life of Mrs. Scott and also of a Toronto-area woman, the accident happened on highway 16 about half a mile north of where it meets highway 401. Mrs. Scott had served as the leader for the Ashton 4-H homemaking club in recent years. She also helped out with senior citizen events and could always be counted on to lend a hand at undertakings such as the community fun days held at Ashton. Mrs. Scott is survived by her husband, Jim, who is also well known for his community work and sports  involvement, her daughter Laurie and son Mark, her mother Mrs. Jean McKay, and her sister Betty (Mrs. Neil Lewis) of RR2 Ashton. She was predeceased by her father, William Alvin McKay. Mrs. Scott's funeral was held at the chapel in Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place last Monday afternoon, with burial in Dewar’s cemetery.

Scott, Barbara Edna nee McKay

Barbara Edna (McKay) Scott, of RR2 Ashton, was killed in a car accident near Prescott on November 4, 1983. She was 37 Years Old. Born in Almonte on December 27, 1945, Barb was the daughter of Jennie and the late William Alvin McKay of Ashton. She received her elementary education at Ashton Public school and completed her secondary schooling at South Carleton High School, which she attended until the end of Grade 12. Along with being employed as a secretary at Bell Northern Research, Barb was quite active in the community. She was a member of the Ashton United Church, an active leader in the Ashton 4-H Homemaking Club and assisted in senior citizen and other community activities. Her friendly, cheerful and helpful disposition made her everybody's "friend". On October 9, 1965 Barb was married to James R Scott in Ashton. Along with her husband and mother, she is survived by daughter Laurie, 17, and son Mark, 12, both at home. Also survived by Sister Betty (Mrs. Neil Lewis) of RR2 Ashton. Funeral service took place from the Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place, on November 7, 1983 at 2 p.m. with Rev Erik Lynk officiating.

Interment was in Dewars Cemetery, Ashton. Pallbearers were friends and relatives, Gary Rylott, Garry Scott, Steven Lewis, Jim McKay, William Lowe and Tom Woods.

Simpson, Eliza Eveline

Fairview Manor resident Eliza Eveline Simpson died in the Almonte General Hospital Jan. 30. She was 90 years old. She was born Nov. 17, 1901 in Goulbourn Township in Carleton County, the daughter of the late John Kidd Simpson and his late wife Mary Jane Duncan. Miss Simpson never married and spent her life working as a piano teacher. She was a member of the United Church of Canada Ashton Charge (U.C.W, choir, C.B.C, etc.). She is survived by her niece Norma Kathleen Simpson (wife of James C.D. Simpson) of Trenton, and grand nephews James Kidd Simpson of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Danny Ormond Simpson of Stoney Creek, Carl Richard Simpson of Thunder Bay and Scott David Simpson of Hamilton. Miss Simpson was predeceased by her brothers Joshua Ormond and James Garland Simpson as well as her sisters Zelma and Eliza Mary Simpson. She was also predeceased by her nephew James Carl Duncan Simpson. The funeral took place at the Ashton United Church Feb. 9 with the Rev. James Baldwin officiating. Remains resting at Kerry's Funeral Home with interment in the Dewar Cemetery in Ashton in the spring. The pallbearers were James Simpson, Danny Simpson, Scott Simpson, Bill Simpson, Vern Menzies and Clarence Lewis.

Simpson, Wilfred

Wilfred Simpson passed away suddenly at the Ottawa Civic Hospital Jan. 12. He was in his 85th year. Born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, he was the son of the late Arthur Simpson and his late wife Annie Butler. He was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters. Three of Mr. Simpson's brothers served in World War I and a sister served in World War II with the R.A.F. In 1930, Mr. Simpson came to Canada in 1930 and settled in the Appleton area. He was employed in the district and Ashton, Almonte and Carleton Place areas until 1940 when he joined the R.C.A., going overseas and serving for Canada until February 1945 when he was wounded. Returning to Canada in August 1945, he worked for Findlay's Foundry until January 1956 and then was employed with the Ontario Government Department of Health in Smiths Falls until his retirement in January 1977.

Upon his return to Canada after the war, Mr. Simpson married Olive Aitken of Appleton in October 1945. They have resided in Carleton Place. In October 1995, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with family, friends and a grand-nephew from England. Mr. Simpson was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and choir. He is survived by his wife Olive, sisters and brothers-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews in England and Canada. The funeral service took place at Kerry's Funeral Home in Carleton Place, Jan. 15. Rev. Hugh Jack officiating. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery in the spring. Mr. Simpson's pallbearers were Gary Aitken, Cameron Philips and nephews John McCracken, Kenneth McCracken, Peter Helgason and David Helgason. Honorary pallbearers were Don Montgomery and Joe Mahoney.

Don moved from Ottawa with his family to his farm "Erinmoor", Carleton Place in July 1966 and enjoyed life in the country and the many good friends and associations he made through the years. He was always a very compassionate person and never knowingly harmed anyone, but has done many a good turn and given a helping hand when and where he could throughout his lifetime and sincerely appreciated the many courtesies extended to him from time to time by friends and neighbours. Passes Away at Middleville

The messenger of death visited the community of Middleville on Monday evening, April 18, 1949, claiming Helen Edna Bowen, wife of R. L. Somerville. On Sunday morning deceased was stricken with a paralytic stroke from which she failed to gain consciousness and passed away the following evening. Born in Lanark Township on December 9, 1878, she was the last surviving member of the family of the late David Bowen and his wife, Charlotte Henderson. Four brothers and a sister predeceased her, namely, George of Grand Forks, N.D., Elizabeth, (Mrs. Kingsley) and Lewis of Saskatchewan, David M. of Brockville and Fred of Windsor. Deceased spent practically her entire lifetime in her native county. She followed the vocation of teaching at Raycroft's, in Darling township, Bulloch's, Boyd's and Middleville in Lanark township and was well and favourably known in the districts she served. Of a retiring disposition, her chief interest was her home and family. In her home community she gave support and co-operation to the Women's Institute, and in the church especially to the Women's Missionary Society she gave long and loyal service. On September 23, 1914, she was united in marriage to Robert Lewis Somerville of Middleville and to this union was born one daughter, Charlotte Marion Cavell, now of Toronto. Also to mourn her losses are two step-sons, Ralph L. of Woodroffe and J. Earle of Ottawa. In the absence of the pastor, Mr. J. E. Atkinson, Rev. R.J. McNaught of Lanark conducted the funeral service from her late residence to St. Paul's United Church on Thursday afternoon. During the service Messrs. Raymond Paul and Harry Stead sang, “Good-Night and Good Morning". The pallbearers were Messrs. Robert Nairn, James; Bowes, William R. Somerville, William R. Affleck, Lionel Barr and Frank Manson. Joseph George F Rust Taylor

A former resident of Ashton, Joseph George Frederick Rust Taylor, who lived at the Rideau Veteran's Home in Ottawa, died at the home on June 29, 1986. He was 94 years old. George was born in Buckinghamshire, England on February 7, 1892, the son of the late Joseph Taylor and his wife Francis Rust. In 1910, he emigrated from England. A farmer for most of his life near Ashton, George was also a long-time member of the Ashton United Church and was an active choir member. As well, he served overseas during World War 1 as a private in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. On June 8, 1927, George was married to the late Annie Mabel Kennedy Fleming in Ashton. He is survived by one son Allen J of Carleton Place and two daughters Rena (Mrs. Peter Parkman) and Jean (Mrs. Bert Leach) of Stittsville. Also survived by several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Funeral service was held at the Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place, on July 1, 1986 at 2 p m. Rev Eric Lynk officiated at the service. Interment was in Dewar's Cemetery, Ashton. Pallbearers were Barry, John and Michael Parkman, Dale and David Leach and John Taylor.

13-year-old girl dies in accident

 Alix Karina White

PERTH (Staff) - A 13-year-old Ashton girl was killed instantly Tuesday night after she was struck by a half-ton truck on Concession Road 9, five kilometers east of Highway 29. Alix Karina White died about 7:35 when she attempted to cross the road and join five friends in a parked car on the south side. White had left the car with her friend’s minutes earlier to visit another group of friends who had parked on the north side of the road. Debra Anne Mcnulty of RR 2, Carleton Place was driving the truck that struck White. Police reported that Mcnulty said she was travelling about 95 kilometers an hour when the accident occurred. Police said Mcnulty sideswiped the car parked on the south side before striking the girl.

No charges have been laid but police said there still may be an inquest.

The investigation continues.
