ODE TO DADDY

 Harry (Henry) Lloyd Mather

26 October 1876 - 27 January 1952

How do we remember him?

The gentleness most of all

The absolute knowing

That we were his whole world

Loving eyes looking down onto tousled heads;

The soft Pats and warm smiles

For his Precious tots

Remember the big old armchair

Where we snuggled on his lap:

The strong arm encircling

The feel of his rough shirt

A bead framed in the window

As we walked up the street;

A volume of the Book of Knowledge

Balanced on his knee

The kindling that he shaved each day

To fight the morning fire:

The smell of the crackling wood stove

As we settled down at night

All-day trips he'd take to town:

We awaited his return

To get our treats of plums to eat

And barrettes for our hair

A garden full of vegetables

To last as through the year:

Weeding In the evenings

Smudge smoke through the air

Remember how he dressed for Church

The way he out on his socks;

The old but well kept suit of clothes

Brought out on that day?

We all trooping down the street

Toward the corner Church:

Can you still see the tilt of his hat?

The shine on his old black boots

How proudly be sat with us at his side inside the little church;

Listening carefully to what was preached

Bowing far down for the Prayer

Gatherings around the piano at home

To sing those great old hymns:

His favourites - "Softly and Tenderly"-"Beaulah Land" and "Abide with Me"

How could be have left as with so much in so short a time?

How lucky we are to have tad a Dad

So fine and gentle so kind

He Is a Part of us forever.

Of all our children too:

Do you feel his Presence Sometimes?

As though he's watching over you?

Well-known auctioneer H B Montgomery dead

Well-known Carleton Place Auctioneer Henry Burnett Montgomery died in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital last Thursday following a short battle with cancer. He was 86. HB, as he was affectionately known throughout the Ottawa Valley, had a career which spanned 40 years in the auction sale business and despite his illness of recent months he was involved in an auction sale as recently as late August of this year. A former farmer and butcher he handled as many as three or four auctions a week for years and over the past 26 years teamed with another well respected local auctioneer, Howard McNeely. "I always said the auction sale was part of Burnett and he was part of the auction," McNeely said Monday in reminiscing about his many years of working with Montgomery. "He was a good fellow to work with, a perfect gentleman with a great respect for everyone," McNeely fondly recalled. "He worked hard for the person he was doing the sale for, but he was also fair with the person buying the item," he noted. "In all the years together we never had a (bad) word," McNeely stated. "We worked a system and he often said to me 'Howard there aren't two men in a million who get along as we do,' and I'd tell him that it was because neither of us was power hungry and we worked for the betterment of all concerned." Despite his age Montgomery couldn't completely quit the auction business. "He'd tell me many times he was going to quit, but he never really did," McNeely mentioned. In a feature story with appeared in The Canadian in June of 1982 Montgomery said he began auctioneering to help "make ends meet". At that time he was operating a general store in Ashton.

Cattle-buyer

For many years he combined the auction business with cattle-buying which was his main business. At one time he owned 850 acres of land in the Appleton, Carleton Place area. He used to buy feeder cattle out west and ship them east to sell to farmers here: One year he shipped 50 carloads back. In the feature Montgomery recalled come of the major sales he'd done over years. "The largest sale in town we ever did was when we sold the Mississippi Hotel by auction," he said. "Mr. McNeely and I sold the contents the same day. The bedroom suites were all pine and. oak." He often said he enjoyed the business because it gave him the chance to meet people. "I get acquainted with an awful lot of very nice people," he stated.

H B Montgomery

He was born in Goulbourn Township and later lived in Ashton where he operated the store and a farm. He moved to Carleton Place in the early 1940s where he eventually got into the auction business. Montgomery is survived by his wife Helen and daughters Shirley (Mrs. Don Lashley) and Iola (Mrs. Bob Blackburn) both of Smiths Falls as well as a sister Jean (Mrs. Ted Andison) of Jasper, Ontario, Also by six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Sunday at 2:30pm at Zion-Memorial United Church in Carleton Place with Rev Wesley Mitchell officiating, Interments was in the United Cemeteries. In commenting on the future of the auction sale business he ran in partnership with Montgomery for so many, years Howard McNeely said Mondays that he will continue to operate the business. "I've been asked by a few people since Burnett died
