January 20, 1966         Mrs. J. E. Dezell Dies In Vancouver

            Mrs. Edna Alma Dezell, widow of  the late John Edward Dezell., 1745 Fern St., Vancouver, B.C., passed away in Vancouver Hospital on January 20, 1966, following a period of ill health. She was in her 82nd year. The late Mr. and Mrs. Dezell were former well known residents of Carleton Place and Appleton, where they had resided for many years before moving to Vancouver. Mrs. Dezell is survived by one daughter, Mae, Mrs. William Fulton of Hamilton, Ont.; one son, Forrest of Vancouver; a sister, Mrs. James Dezell of Vancouver and four grandchildren. The funeral was held on Monday, January 24th from the Burrard Funeral Home, where the service was conducted in the chapel. Interment was in North Vancouver Cemetery.


1966         Mrs. J. Maley Dies At Prescott

            The death occurred at her residence, Centre Street, Prescott of Mrs. John Maley, well-known resident for over 25 years. The funeral was held on Monday, with Rev. A. E. Pepper, of  Brockville, conducting a memorial service at the Appleton Funeral Home in Prescott, after  the remains were conveyed  to St. James Anglican Church, Carleton Place, where Rev. E. D. Fleming officiating a service  preceding deposition in St. James Vault to await burial in the family plot. Pallbearers were Messrs. Charles Bradley, James Brooks, William Elliott, E. Martin , Elzie Nesbitt and Richard Shaver, all of Prescott. Mrs. Maley, the former  Ethel Langtry was born on March 17th, 1881, at Jellyby, the daughter of James Langtry and his wife, Mary Jane Smith. She received her education in Carleton Place where her girlhood years were spent. On October 9, 1913 was united in marriage to John Maley and they took up residence on a farm at Roebuck, later  moving to Prescott. Predeceased several years. by her husband, she is survived by one brother, Mr. I. C. Langtry of Carleton Place; two nephews, J. Franklin Boyd of Boyd’s , Ont., J. Francis (Sam) Langtry of Carnegie, Pa., and five nieces, Mrs. J. Herbert (Ethel) Stewart, Mrs. William K. (Eleanor) Bailey; Mrs. Blair (Betty) Deale and Miss Margaret Langtry of Toronto, and Mrs.. T. A.. (Mary) Rogers of Perth, Ont.. Two sisters, Margaret, Mrs. D. R.. McNeely of Carleton Place and Maude, Mrs. Hayes Boyd of Boyd’s, Ontario, a brother, Frank Langtry and a nephew, Gordon Langtry of Carleton Place predeceased her.


August 7, 1966         Mrs. Herbert Henery Dies At 76 Years

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Herbert Henery, well known resident of Carleton Place, at her funeral which took place on Tuesday, August 9, 1966, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., to St. James Anglican Church where Rev. E. D. Fleming, conducted the service at 1:30 p.m. Interment was in East Gloucester Cemetery, Ramsayville, Ont. Mrs. Henery, who had resided at 127 Victoria St., passed away suddenly at her residence on Sunday, August 7th. She was 76 years of age. Born in Ramsay Township on September 29, 1889, the former Margaret Jane Dowdall, she was a daughter of the late George Dowdall and his wife the late Anne Jane Gardiner. She attended St. James Anglican Church and was a member of St. James W. A. She was married to Herbert Henery, who survives, on June 28, 1911, in St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville, Ont. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters' Anne (Mrs. James Johnson) of Omemee; Hilda (Mrs. Cecil Dugdale) of town and Margaret (Mrs. Oscar Sweeney) of Ottawa; three brothers, Charles Dowdall of town, Norman Dowdall of Ramsay Township and Oliver Dowdall of Perth; one sister , Elsie (Mrs. Herb Rathwell) of town. A son George predeceased her a few years ago. Mrs. Henery, who had resided at 127 Victoria St., passed away suddenly at her residence on Sunday, August 7th. She was 76 years of age. The pallbearers, six nephews of the deceased, were Lloyd Rathwell, Dan Rintoul, Bob Dowdall, Mae Dowdall, Bill Dowdall and Mel Dowdall.


July 22,1966         G. W. Weir Paid Final Tribute

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of George Wellington Weir at his funeral from Fleming Bros. Funeral Home to St. John Church, Innisville, last Friday afternoon, July 22, 1966. The rector Rev. F. Maxwell and Rev. F. Allsopp. of Ottawa, (a former rector) officiated at the service. Interment was in adjoining cemetery. Mr. Weir (a retired C.P.R. conductor), who resided at his home in Ramsay, died suddenly Monday. July 18. He was born August 8, 1887, a son of the late John Weir and Anne Stein. He had been an employee of the C.P.R. forty-one years, retiring in 1952. In 1923 he married Myrtle Bowland who predeceased him February 28, 1945. To them were born a son, Lyle Weir of Carleton Place and a daughter, Geraldine (Mrs. M. Henderson), of Tennyson. In June, 1951, he married Beatrice Bowland who survives. Also surviving are three sisters Zephyr (Mrs. J. Turner) of Carleton Place, Zelina (Mrs. R. J. Langford) of Whitby, Ethel (Mrs. H. Morphy) of Smiths Falls, a brother, Cecil of Ramsay; three grandchildren, Murray and Marlene Weir and Rae Anne Henderson. He was also predeceased by two brothers, John Weir of Ramsay and White River in 1900 and William Weir of Carleton Place in 1957. He attained his public school education in S.S. No. 1 Ramsay and was a faithful member of St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville. His funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from Cobden, Clayton, Smiths Falls, Toronto, Ottawa, Whitby and Newboro. The pallbearers were Burnet Montgomery, Harwood McCreary, Clark Greer, George Doucett, Stanley Thackaberry and Herb G. Stanley.


September 29, 1966         Charles Stewart Dies In 73rd Year

            Funeral service was held at Calgary on October 1st for Mr. Charles E. Stewart, who died in the Calgary General Hospital on September 29th in his 73rd year. Born in Carleton Place, lie, moved to Medicine Hat in 1909 and entered the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1911.  In 1932 he transferred to Calgary  and retired in 1958 from the position of locomotive engineer after 47 years with the railway. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the CPR Pensioners' Association. He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Warren and son, Warren Stewart, who is Chief Inspector with the Calgary City Police, two grandchildren and one brother, James W. Stewart of Toronto.

        In hospital, Carleton Place, Wednesday , Jan. 4, 1967, Sadie A. Gardiner, beloved wife of the late Frank Cooke, dear mother of Evelyn (Mrs. Pete McGregor) and Audrey (Mrs. Wallace Kilfoyle), Kingston; dear sister of James Gardiner, Ida (Mrs. Eddie Rathwell), and Ellen (Mrs. Ossie McNeely). Resting at the Fleming Brothers Funeral Home, Lake Avenue W. Service in St. James Anglican Church, Friday, Jan. 6 at 1.30 p.m. Interment St. John's cemetery, Innisville, Ontario.


Jan. 5, 1967         GILES, Ella Jane

        At the Shail Nursing Home, Carleton Place, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 1967, Ella Jane Thompson,  wife of the late Elizah W. Giles, in her 89th year. Resting at the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte. Funeral service at St. George's Anglican Church, Clayton, on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2.30 p.m. Entombment United cemetery Vault. Burial in the spring at St. George's Anglican cemetery, Clayton.


January 6, 1967         DOWDALL, Charles Gardiner

        At his home, High Street, Carleton Place, Friday, Jan. 6, 1967, Charles Gardiner Dowdall, beloved husband of Annie Menzies, dear father of Harold, Waterloo, Bob of Perth, and five grandchildren, dear brother of Oliver, Perth, Norman, Elsie (Mrs. Herb Rathwell), Carleton Place. Resting at Fleming Brothers Funeral Home, Lake Avenue West. Service in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, on Monday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. Interment Auld Kirk cemetery. Almonte. Masonic service Sunday evening at 7.30.


February 4, 1967         John W. Cram Paid Final Tribute

            This community was saddened last week by the passing of a beloved and respected citizen, John Wallace Cram.  He died in  Hospital, Carleton Place, Saturday morning, February 4th. Funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. J. E. MacPhail at the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Tuesday, February 7th. John Cram was born on Glen Isle November 1896, the  third son of Daniel Cram and his wife Euphemia Houston. He went to school in Ramsay and the Carleton Place High School. He farmed till uncertain health induced  him to retire and later moved to 27 Albert St., Carleton Place. He is survived by his widow, the former Eva F. Stevenson, a daughter Barbara, (Mrs. E. G. Cameron) of Ottawa and a son William with Ontario Dept. of Lands and Forests, (Air Service) at Sault Ste. Marie and nine grandchildren. Two brothers survive, Glen in Three Hills, Alta., and Boyd in Ottawa; and two sisters, Grace (Mrs. Benjamin Guhl) of Cleveland, Ohio, and Florence (Mrs. Harwood McCreary) of Glen Isle. Two brothers predeceased him, Murray and William and two sisters, Laura and Jessie (Mrs. Morley Wilkinson). He was a life-long Baptist and active in that Church's affairs, serving at one time as Clerk and on the Board of Managers for many years. At one time he was on the Beckwith Council and also a Trustee at Ramsay S. S. No. 8. He took an active interest in agricultural matters, His sound judgment and keen, kindly sense of humour will be missed by a host of friends. Pallbearers were: Elmer Reid, Bill Anderson, Hollie Lowry, Robt. Hawkins, Bert Lowry and Arnold Jackson.


  Thursday, August 31, 1967         Albert Crampton Dies In 76th Year

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of Albert Austin Crampton at his funeral, which took place on Saturday, August 26 1967, from, the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., to St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville, where Rev. F. Maxwell conducted the service at 2:30 p.m. Interment was in John’s Cemetery, Innisville. Mr. Crampton, who had resided at 77 Lisgar St., passed away in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Thursday evening, August 24, following a lengthy illness. Born in Innisville, on March 19, 1892, he was a son of the late Samuel Crampton and his wife, the late Elizabeth Bolton. He received his education at Innisville and attended St. John’s Anglican Church. He had lived in Innisville nearly all his life, moving to Carleton Place just a short time ago. For a number of years he had been employed by the Ont. Department. of Highways. He was married in St. Mark’s Church, Pakenham, in 1921, to the former Vera Mabel Jackson who survives . Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Garfield and Irwin, both of Carleton Place; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Lewis (Edna) of Tennyson and Mrs. Archie Marr (Verna) of Kingston. The pallbearers were Charles Menzies, Ernest Hammond, Gordon Cumming, Herb McManus, William Armstrong and Alex Hueston. The flower bearers, nephews of the deceased were Art Evoy, Jack Greer, Ken Jackson, and Wayne Crampton.


Thursday, November 3rd, 1967         R. H. Willows Dies Innisville

            The death of Mr. Russell Hammond Willows occurred on Friday, November 3, 1967 at his home near Innisville. Born on October 6, 1896 at Boyd's Settlement, he was the son of the late Wesley Willows and his wife, Margaret Hammond. After receiving his education at Boyd’s and Carleton Place, he farmed in the district all his life time moving to Innisville last June. Mr. Willows took an active part in the life of his community. He was an elder in Boyd's United Church for many years. He served on the local school board and after its inception on the Lanark Township School Area Board. At the time of his death he was president of Boyd’s Cheese Factory and a member and past president of the Lanark County Milk Committee. He was a former county director of the Ontario Cheese Producer's Association and a committee member on the Ontario Cheese Marketing Board. His first wife, Hattie Walker, predeceased him in 1928. He is survived by his wife, Merle Henrietta Tennant; four sons, Gerald, Keith, Raymond of Boyd's; Sterling of Peterborough; six daughters, Dorothy, Mrs. Cecil Munro, Kingston; Feryn, Mrs. John R. McGill, Pakenham; Elva, Mrs. Alvin Kelford, Ferguson's Falls; Ellen, Mrs. Gilles Lalonde; Beth and Heather Ann of Ottawa; a brother, Earl of Boyd’s; sisters, Mrs. Russell Craig; Olive and Mabel of Carleton Place and 11 grandchildren. A brother, Wilbert  predeceased him in 1949. The body rested at Fleming Brother's Funeral Home, until Sunday, November 5, thence to Boyd’s United Church for the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Services were conducted by Rev. K. J. Murray and Rev. W. L. Henley. Interment was in the United Cemetery, Boyd’s. Pallbearers were Wesley Craig, Lyall Grant, David Munro, Bill Prohaska, Ervin Sweeney and Doug Weir.


November 21, 1967         JOHNSTON, John Allen, MD

        At his home Bridge Street, Carleton Place, Tuesday, Nov. 21, 1967, John Allen Johnston, MD, beloved husband of Annie Thompson, dear brother of Delia, Ottawa Civic Hospital, and Russell, Kars, Ont., aged 71 years. Resting at his home Bridge Street, until 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, thence to St. James Anglican Church to rest until time of service at 2 p.m. Interment St. James cemetery. Arrangements by Fleming Funeral Home.

  Dr. Johnston Died Suddenly Tuesday Night

            Dr. J. A. Johnston, one, of the best known medical practitioners in the Ottawa Valley, died suddenly at his residence on Bridge Street Tuesday evening at the age of 71 years. He will rest at his residence until 10 a.m. on Friday. thence to St. James Anglican Church where the service 2 p.m. Interment parish cemetery. Dr. Johnston is survived by his wife, the former Annie Thompson, a brother Russell of Kars, Ont. and a sister, Miss Della. Johnston, Ottawa Civic Hospital.

Final Tribute Paid Dr. J. A. Johnston

            Dr. J. A. Johnston, a "dedicated" family physician in Carleton Place for the past 43 years, was paid final tribute by the community at large and numerous friends at his funeral last Friday afternoon. The doctor died suddenly at his residence on Bridge street during the evening of November 21, at the age of 71 years. The remains rested at his residence until Friday morning when it was taken to St. James Anglican Church for service in the afternoon, conducted by his rector, Rev. E. D. Fleming. Interment was made in the parish cemetery. A fitting tribute to his memory as an outstanding physician was paid by the medical fraternity of the district who formed a guard of honor at the church and at the cemetery. They numbered the medical staff of Carleton Place and Almonte and Dr. Brannan, president of the Lanark County Medical Society, Dr. J. C. Samis and Dr. W. H. Caven of Ottawa. The field of politics within the Progressive Conservative party of the province and the country was long one of Dr. Johnston's greatest interests. The honorary pallbearers consisted of three representatives of the Progressive Conservative Association, the Hon. George E. Gomme, Ontario Minister of Highways; Desmond Code, MP for Lanark and George H. Doucett, a former MLA and MP for Lanark. Others were George E. Findlay representing Findlays Ltd.; Roy McKittrick representing the Canadian Legion; Mayor Howard W. McNeely representing the Corporation; G. W. B. McDonald representing the Industrial Commission and a personal friend, Dr. E. J. Walroth. The active pallbearers were members of C Company of the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment. The doctor was medical officer for many years. He was born in North Gower Township, a son of the late James Johnston and his wife, Martha Allen. He received his primary and secondary education there and graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine degree at the University of Toronto. He practised at St. Luke's Hospital in Ottawa for a year and came to Carleton Place on July 29, 1924, occupying the present residence. Here he began his 43 years of dedicated practise in Carleton Place and the surrounding farming community. He was elected to Carleton Place Council in 1929 and served as a councillor, reeve and warden of Lanark County and in 1937 as mayor of Carleton Place. One of his greatest interests was  the field of politics and he became an adviser and friend of those in high positions today. He was a member of the of the Lanark County Progressive Conservative Association for many years and also served as president of the Carleton Place Association. One of his hobbies was the raising of sheep and saddle horses on his farm at North Gower. While many people may have thought Dr. Johnston's life was in narrow ways, his interests were varied and his presence  behind the scenes .was always felt by those with whom he worked. An example of this as the acquisition of new industry in Carleton Place. Dr. Johnston was a power to the Industrial Commission. He thought much of Canada and as a result used his influence in advancing Eastern Ontario particularly. He was married in St. Paul's Church at Almonte on April 5, 1926 to the former Annie Thompson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Thompson. During his years here he did not miss attending the 8 o'clock service at St. James Anglican Church. He served for years as a  church warden and in other capacities. Another interest was the University Club of Ottawa. He was an associate member of the Mississippi Golf Club and a member of the I.O.O.F for 51 years. He and Miss Evelyn Wilson were founders of the St. John Ambulance Brigade here. Dr. Johnston served as medical officer of Carleton Place, Beckwith, Ramsay and Pakenham for many years. He was also medical officer for Findlays Ltd. Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister, Della Johnston of Ottawa and a brother, Russell of Kars, Ont.


1967         T. E. Rathwell Dies - 73 Years

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory Of Thomas Edward Rathwell at his funeral which tool, place on Sunday, December 3, 1967, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west to St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville, where the service was held at 1 p.m. with Rev. H. Horsey officiating Family prayers at the Funeral Home were conducted by Rev. J. K. Murray. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery. Mr. Rathwell passed away suddenly at his late residence, 355 Clayton St., on Thursday, November 30. He was 73 years of age. Born on February, 9, 1894, in Beckwith Township, he was a son of the late Samuel Rathwell and his wife, the late Mary Anne Andrews. He was educated at McCreary’s school and attended St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville and St. James Church at Carleton Place. Prior to his retirement he had farmed for a number of years in the Scotch Corners area. He was married in St. John's Church, Innisville, on April 7, 1920, to the former Alice Ellen Dowdall who predeceased him a few years ago. He is survived by a son Loyde and a daughter, Elsie (Mrs. Dan Rintoul) both of Carleton Place; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by a son, Earl who was killed in action in 1942 while serving with the R.C.A.F. Two brothers, Ernest and Benjamin and two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Gardiner and Mrs. Winnifred Andrews, also predeceased him. The pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, were George Dowdall, Bill Dowdall, John Tennant, Stanley Kilfoyle, Keith Morphy and Wayne Kenny.


1968         R. W. Douglas Dies - 86th Year

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of Richard William  Douglas at his funeral which took place on Thursday, April 11, 1968  from the Alan R . Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., to St. John's Church. Innisville, where Rev. A. Horsey conducted the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery, Innisville. Mr. Douglas, who had resided in the Scotch Corner's area, passed away in the C. P. & D. Memorial Hospital on Monday, April 8, following an illness of about two months. He was in his 86th year. Born on January 22, 1883 at Scotch Corners, he was the son of the late Richard Douglas and his wife the late Elizabeth Dowdall. He had farmed all his life on the homestead at Scotch Corners. He attended St. John's Anglican Church at Innisville. He is survived by a brother Melvin of Carleton Place and two sisters, Miss Ethel Douglas, on the homestead and Mrs. Gavin (Florence) Hall of Carleton Place. He was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters. The pallbearers were Stanley Dowdall, Clifford Gardiner and nephews, Keith Gardiner, Douglas Lowe, Harold Robertson and Lloyd Douglas.


July 21, 1968         Dan B. Cram Dies - 65th Year

            The funeral of Daniel Boyd Cram took place July 23, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Avenue to the Baptist Church where Rev. John MacPhail assisted by Rev. Ron Crawford of Ottawa conducted the service. Interment was made in the United Cemeteries. Mr. Cram died in an Ottawa hospital, July 21 after an illness of many years. He was in his 65th year and had resided at Glen Isle. He was born October 22, 1903, a son of the late Daniel Cram and his wife, Euphemia Houston of Glen Isle. He attended the Carleton Place Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his four brothers. Murray, Glen, Jack, and William; also by two sisters, Miss Laura Cram and Jessie, Mrs. M. Wilkinson. Survivors include two sisters, Grace, Mrs. Ben Guhl of Cleveland and Florence,  Mrs. Harwood McCreary of Glen Isle. The pallbearers were Robert Anderson, Robert Hawkins, Bert Lowry, Dr. E. G. Cameron, Dan McCreary and Glen Robertson.


September 21, 1968         Ebert Morris Dies At Elgin

            Mr. Harold Ebert Morris, late Mr. and Mrs. of the J. H. Morris of Innisville and Carleton Place, passed away at his home in Elgin, on Saturday, September 21, 1968. The late Mr. Morris had attended High School in Carleton Place and had worked in town for several years. In Elgin he was a barber by trade. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Taylor; one daughter, Arlie, Mrs. Harry Beckstead) of Prescott:, a sister Doris (Mrs. T. L. Gibson) of Kingston and a brother Mervyn P. Morris of Carleton Place. The funeral was held on Tuesday, September 24. from the Scotland Funeral Horne to St. Paul's Anglican Church for service. Interment was. in Elgin Cemetery. The pallbearers were local businessmen of Elgin.


September 28, 1968         J. N. Dezell Dies Suddenly

            James N. Dezell passed away suddenly in North Vancouver on Saturday, September 28, 1968. Born in McCreary Settlement, Ramsay Township. son of the late James Dezell and Sarah Cooke, Mr. Dezell married the former Victoria Pratt in Bethel Methodist Church, Maberly, Ont. on August 29th, 1906. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1910 and to North Vancouver in 1926. They later went to Prince George , where Mr. Dezell formed the Construction Co., now operated by his son. He is survived by his wife, one son Garvin, Mayor of Prince George. B.C., one daughter, (Laura) Mrs. Ralph Evjen,  North Vancouver, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Wilfred of London, Ont. He is predeceased by four brothers, Oliver H., Howard and George of Ramsay and John of North Vancouver and one sister Pearl of Ramsay. In 1950 Mr. and Mrs. Dezell retired to North Vancouver, where they both enjoyed good health. Two years ago they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.


October 3, 1968         Mrs. G. Nolan Dies -71st Year

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Grace Nolan at her largely attended funeral which took place on Thursday, October 3, 1968, from the Patterson and Son Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west, where Rev. K. J. Murray conducted the service at 2 p.m. Interment was in Boyd’s United Cemetery. Grace, who had resided at 266 Bridge St., passed away suddenly, following a heart seizure at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Monday, September 30. She was in her 71st year. Born in Scotch Corners on November 12, 1897, the former Grace Cooke, she was a daughter of the late George Cooke and his wife, the late Elizabeth Hughes. She was educated at the Scotch Corners school and was an active member of Zion-Memorial United Church Grace had been employed as a nurse’s aide at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, since it was first opened in 1955. She was a member of the Mississippi Rebekah Lodge, the Cancer Society, the I.O.D.E. and St. John’s Ambulance. She is survived by one brother, Lorne Cooke, four sisters, Gertrude: Mrs. Clarence Emerson (Mary); Mrs. James Miller (Edith); Mrs. George Malloch (Dorothy) and a number of nieces and nephews . The pallbearers, nephews of  the deceased were James (Bud) Miller, Gerald Reid, Lyman MacMillan, Ronald Cooke, Kenneth Cooke and Carl Cooke. On Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m. the Mississippi Rebekah Lodge held a memorial service at the funeral home.


October 12th, 1968         Miss S. Rothwell Dies Suddenly

            The funeral of Miss Susie Rothwell was held Saturday afternoon, October 12, 1968, from the Patterson Funeral Home, Carleton Place, to St. John's Church, Innisville where service was conducted by Rev. D. Fleming assisted by Rev. Stalter. Interment was made in the family plot in St. John's Cemetery. Miss Rothwell died on October 10 in Memorial Hospital, Carleton Place, following a short illness She was born in Ferguson Falls, a daughter of the late T. A. Rothwell and his wife, Matilda Graham. She was educated in Lanark,  Perth and Teacher's College, Ottawa. She came to reside in Carleton Place in 1947. She was a member of St. James Church being the treasurer for several years, a member of the Ladies Guild and of the Altar Guild. Beside her parents she was predeceased by three sisters, Eleanor (Mrs. A. M. Sheppard), Annie and Blanche and one brother Corporal J. G. Rothwell who lost his life in the first World War. She is survived by two brothers, William of Carleton Place and Harold of Ottawa. The pallbearers were Sam Rothwell, Kenneth Davidson, Robert Dezell, Jack Rothwell, James Miller and Thomas Graham.


October 13, 1968         Mrs. L. Lowe Dies - 53 Years

            The funeral of Mrs. Linton Lowe of R. R. # 1, Carleton Place, took place on Wednesday, October 16, 1968, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave. where Rev. H. Horsey conducted the service at 1:30 p.m. Interment was in St. Johns Cemetery, Innisville. Mrs. Lowe passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 13, in the C. P. & D. Memorial Hospital. She was 53 years of age. Born in Pakenham Township on December 2, 1914, the former Mary Agnes Campbell, she was a daughter of the late James Campbell and his wife Christine McLaughlin of Pakenham who survives. She was educated at Clay Bank, and St. Mary's, Ont. and attended St. Johns Anglican Church, Innisville. She was married in Carp to William Linton Lowe who survives. Besides her husband and mother she is survived by two sons, Donald of Richmond and James of Carleton Place; four daughters, Elinore (Mrs. Robert Lay) of Carleton Place; Mary of Perth; Myrtle ( Mrs. Jack Neron) of Carleton Place and Marjorie at home; four sisters, Jean (Mrs. Jack Vanstone) St. Mary's, Ont.; Helen (Mrs. John Levi) and Christine (Mrs. Ted Wood) both of Pakenham; Dolly (Mrs. Frank Finner) of Winnipeg; a stepsister Margaret (Mrs. Don Neron) of Carleton Place and two step-brothers, Joseph Legree of Ottawa and Edward Legree of Pakenham. She was predeceased by a sister Eva. The pallbearers were Alfred Poole, John Southwell, Alex Hueston, Ken Drummond, Lloyd Carnahan and Clifford Campbell.


October 16, 1968         M. D. Graham Dies - 92nd Year

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Milton David Graham, well known district farmer, at his largely attended funeral which took place on Wednesday, October 16, 1968, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home to Munster United Church where the service was held at 2:45 p.m. with Rev. W. H. LeGrow officiating. Interment was in Munster Union Cemetery. On Tuesday evening a large group of Orangemen attended the Orange Service which was held at the Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Mr. Graham, who had resided on the 7th Line of Goulbourn, passed away on Sunday, October, 13, in the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was in his 92nd year. Born in Goulbourn Township on April 28, 1877, he was a son of the late David Graham and his wife, the late Mary Simpson. He attended Wesley United Church. He was an active and long time member in the Orange Association. For 77 years he was a member of Munster O.Y.B. No. 30, being a Past Master and an honorary member. For 72 years he was a member of Mansfield L.O.L. 69, being a Past Master and an honourary member. He had farmed all his life in the Goulbourn district and had served on Goulbourn Township Council from 1926 to 1947. He was married in St. Stephens Anglican Church, Munster, on June 12, 1912 to the former Cora Cassidy, who survives. Besides his wife he is survived by six sons, Denzil, Russell and Sterling of Stittsville; Claude and Dalton, 7th Line of Goulbourn and Gilmour of Hamilton, Ont.; three daughters, Hazel (Mrs. Rankin Bradley), Helen (Mrs. Willis Ludlow) and Shirley (Mrs. Ivan Seabrook ) all of Stittsville; 24 grandchildren, also survive. The pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, were Clifford Graham ,  Earl Graham, Lorne Vaughan, Allan Cassidy, Leonard Dowdall and Clarence Dowdall.


November 15, 1968         I. G. Kilfoyle Dies Suddenly

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Ivan Gerald Kilfoyle at his largely attended funeral which took place on Sunday, November 17, 1968, from the Alan R. Barker, Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., where the service was held at 2 p.m. with Rev. E. D. Fleming officiating. Interment was in Franktown Cemetery. Gerry, who had resided on High St., passed away early Friday evening, November 15, as the result of an accident on Highway 7, just west of Stittsville, Ont. He was 47 years of age. Born in Franktown on September 7, 1921, he was the son of the !ate Willard P. Kilfoyle and his wife, Elsie McLaren of Innisville who survives. He was educated in Carleton Place and was a member of St. James Anglican Church. He served overseas during the second World War and on returning to Canada remained in the Canadian Army for a number of years. For the past few years he had been employed with the Ontario Department of Highways on technical surveys. He was a member of Branch 192, Royal Canadian Legion. He was married in Ottawa in 1946 to the former Mary Catherine (Casey) Stafford, who survives. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three brothers, Stanley of 0ttawa, Wallace of Seeley's Bay and Murray of Innisville. Honourary pallbearers were Joe Drader, Bob Menzies, John Gavin, William Flynn, Len McKay and Doug Duff. Active pallbearers were Jock Mailey, Bill Clapp, Charlie Clarke, Bill Ryan, Joe Turner and Blair Bittle.


December 25, 1968         Mrs. H. Stanley Dies - 71st Year

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs. Herbert J. S Stanley, well known area resident, at her funeral which took place, on Wednesday, December 27, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west, to St. James Anglican church, where Rev. E. D. Fleming conducted the service at 2 p.m. Internment was in St. George's Cemetery, Clayton, Ont. Mrs. Stanley, who had resided on High St., passed away suddenly on December 25th in Ottawa. She was in her 71st year. Born in Lanark Twp., on  April 23, 1897, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edward James and his wife, the late Hannah McNeely. She was educated at the Carleton Place High School, Trinity College and was a graduate of Ottawa Teachers College. She attended St. James Anglican Church and was a member of  Group I St. James Guild and the Rocky Ridge W.I. Mrs. Stanley was keenly interested in growing flowers and oil painting. She is survived by her husband, Herbert J. Stanley, a retired farmer; two sons Henry of Milton, Ont. and Herbert of Laugher, Co. Seaway, Ireland; three daughters, Ellen (Mrs. Clare Chesney) of Kingston, Hannah (Mrs. Mel Gilmour), and Lillian, Mrs. Sid Mohr, both of Ottawa; two brothers. Ben James of Almonte and Ed James  of Carleton Place and a sister Ellen (Mrs. Hal  Cundell) of Toronto. The pallbearers were Harold James, Barnie James, John Chamney, Ivan Gardiner, Ross Stanley and Donald Lashley.


Mrs. G. Munro Dies, Kingston

            Following an illness of a few months there passed away in the General Hospital, Kingston, on Monday morning, January 31st a well-known resident of Lanark Village, Mrs. Gerald R. Munro. Born in the Hopetown area of Lanark Township on June 19, 1899, Annie Lena Pretty was the second daughter of the late William Pretty and his wife the late Annie Code and she spent her early girlhood there. On September 1st, 1920, she was united in marriage to Gerald R. Munro and the young couple took up residence on the groom's farm at Appleton, coming to Lanark Village in 1925 where the remainder of her life was spent. She was predeceased by an infant son and her sister Minnie, Mrs. Raymond Paul. To mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother are her husband Gerald, their three daughters, Isobelle (Mrs. John Muff) of Deep River, Marjorie (Mrs. Jo Turner) of Carleton Place and Frieda (Mrs. Ted Kidd) of Perth, also nine grandchildren; her sister Ida (Mrs. W. H. Stead) of Lanark Village and her brother Lloyd Pretty of Lanark Township. She will be missed by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the district, not the least of whom are her fellow members of St. Andrew’s United Church Women. Throughout the years she had given generously of her time and talents toward the interests of the Women's organization of the church. The many floral tributes and donations to various societies bore silent testimony of the esteem held by deceased in the hearts of her many friends. The largely attended funeral service held Thursday afternoon, February 3rd, 1972, from Young's Funeral Home in Lanark Village, was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. M. B. Jose of St. Andrew’s United Church. Interment in the United Cemeteries, Carleton Place will take place in the spring. The pallbearers were, Herb Snedden and Hubert Syme, of Appleton and four nephews, Brien Paul of Dalhousie Township, Jack Pope of Perth, Wilmer Pretty and Frank Stead of Lanark Township.


Mrs. M. Dezell Dies-75 Years

            The funeral of Mrs. Milton Dezell took place last Wednesday afternoon from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Avenue west, where the service was conducted by Rev. Henley, assisted by nephew Rev. Gordon Hammond. Interment will be in the United Cemeteries In the spring. Mrs. Dezell died in Memorial Hospital February 2nd, after an illness of several months. She was 75 years of age and had resided at 133 Town Line. The former Florence B. Best, she was born January 2, 1895 at Forfar in Leeds County, daughter of the late Benjamin Best and his wife, Dorcas Langdon. She attended Zion Memorial Church and was a former member of Boyd’s United Church. She is survived by her husband and three sisters, Mrs. Sara Kerr of Elgin, Mrs. Ethel Lowe of Ottawa General Hospital and Mrs. Hattie Arbuckle of town. The pallbearers were Ross Dezell, Eldon Sample, Ivan Gardiner, Lloyd Carnahan, Burton Hands and Mac Dowdall.

        At the Brow Infirmary an Friday, April 25, 1969, Bertha Elizabeth Mueller, beloved wife of Thomson S. Bowman, 33rd Street in her 66th year, dear sister of Mrs. George S. Smith (Amelia), aunt of Mrs. H. E. Burrows (Lorraine), and great aunt of Dale, Paul, Ian  and Nancy. Resting at the Dodsworth  and Brown Funeral Home, Main Street at Bay. Service in Grace Lutheran Church, Cline Avenue, Main Street West on Monday at 3.30 p.m . Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Bowman was a retired elementary school teacher with Hamilton Board of Education. Memorial gifts to Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund are preferred to flowers.


May 4, 1969         Mrs. P. McNeely Dies - 84 Years

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Phoebe Agnes McNeely, well known area resident, at her funeral which took place on Friday, May 9, 1969, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west, where the service was held at 2 p.m. with Rev. J. J. Murray and Capt. Jackson officiating. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Mrs. McNeely, who had resided at 4 Victoria St., passed away suddenly at her home on May 4. She was 84 years of age. Born in Ramsay Township, April 23, 1885, the former Phoebe A. Houston, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Houston and his wife, the late Hannah Galbraith. She was an active member of the Zion-Memorial United Church and was a life member of both the Rocky Ridge W. I. and the U.C.W. She was the widow of Ernest Howard Turner by first marriage and William James McNeely by second marriage. She is survived by a son, Alex H. Turner of Victoria, B. C., Deputy Minister of Agriculture, British Columbia; a step-son, Arthur E. McNeely of Carleton Place; a daughter, Mrs. Hannah McArton of Carleton Place;  and a brother, Archie Houston of Winnipeg, Man. The pallbearers were P. R. Leach, E. Foote, E. Hale, W. J. Anderson, G. Cox and A. E. McNeely.


July 5, 1969         C.M. Emerson Dies -72 Years

            The funeral of Clarence MacAllum Emerson took place July 8  from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur avenue, where Rev. Ken  Murray conducted the service. Interment was made In Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Mr. Emerson, who resided at 84 Herriott street, died In hospital July 5 after a lengthy illness. He was 72 years of age. He was born at Carleton Place, son of the late James Emerson and his wife, Charlotte MacAllum. He lived in the United States for 20 years and returned here in 1947. He was in the grocery business from that time until his retirement in 1964. Mr.  Emerson was a member of the 100 Club, a Past Grand of the Odd Fellows, an active Legion member and a member of the Mississippi Golf Club. He served with the 51st Battery  for four years in the first world war. He was married to the former Mary Cooke on June 22, 1927 at Carleton Place. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Beverly, Mrs. L. J. MacMillan of Ottawa, a brother Clyde of town and four grandchildren, Bruce, Robert, Sandra and Sheryl MacMillan.. The pallbearers were Jock Mailrey,  George LeMaistre, Stewart Comba, William Colborne, Cleve Thorpe and Roy McKittrick.


August 5, 1969         Mrs. Margaret Toop Dies - 76 Years

            Relatives, friends and neighbours paid final tribute to the memory of Mrs. Margaret Matilda Toop at her funeral which took place on Wednesday, August 7, 1969, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west, where Pastor Russell Spangler conducted the service at 2 p.m. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, Ont. Mrs. Toop passed away at the Stonehaven Nursing Home on Monday, August 5th, at the age of 76 years. Born in Ramsay Township, April 29, 1893, the former Margaret Matilda Doucett, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Doucett and his wife, the late Martha Irwin. She was educated at McCreary's School and attended the Almonte Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was married in Carleton Place to the late Charles Gordon Toop, who predeceased her some years ago. She is survived by seven sons, Arthur, Fred and Aylmer of Carleton Place; Ewen, Ottawa; Harry, Arnprior; William, Pembroke, and Albert, Clinton, Ont.; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. L. Gimbel) of Brunswick, Maine and Maybeth (Mrs. L. Goyne) Olympia, Wash.; a brother George Doucett of Carleton Place and a sister, Mrs. Annie Wiggins, Oshawa, Ont. The pallbearers were Messrs. Norman Paul, Alan Thompson, George Hilliard, Allan Doucett, Murray McRae and Stanley Brunton.


August 1969         Mrs. Gardiner Dies-66 Years

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs. Mabel Gardiner at her funeral which took place on Friday , August 15, 1969, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., to St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville, where Rev. H. Horsey conducted the service at 2.30 p.m. Interment was In St. John's Cemetery, Innisville. Mrs. Gardiner, who had resided at Scotch Corners, passed away in General Hospital, Ottawa, on Thursday, August 14, following a short illness. She was 66 years of age. Born at North Gower, Ont., February 9, 1903, the former Mabel Mather, she was the daughter of the late Frank Mather and his wife, the late Elizabeth Phillips. She was educated at North Gower School and Ottawa Normal School. She attended St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville and was active In church work being president of the A.C.W. She was predeceased by her husband, the late George C. Gardiner in 1962. She is survived by one son, Thomas A. Gardiner, on the homestead at Scotch Corners; a daughter Lillian (Mrs. Lyle McNab) Chesterville, Ont., a brother, William Mather of Ottawa; a sister Ethel (Mrs. Byron Storey) of Kemptville and nine grandchildren. The pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, were Albert Storey, Francis Gardiner, Kenneth Gardiner, Allan Gardiner, Howard Jackson, and Arnold Jackson.


Thomas Command Dies In 65th Year

            The funeral of Thomas Command  of Appleton was held on Monday morning from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Avenue west, to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at Almonte where Rev. French celebrate requiem high mass. Interment was made in the United Cemeteries at Clayton. Mrs. Command, died in the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Saturday after all illness of a month. He was in his 65th year. Born July 26, 1898 at Galbraith, Ont., he was a of late son  Thomas Command and his wife, Hannah McGuire. He was educated at Ferguson's Falls. Mr  Command attended St. Mary's Church in Almonte. He was married to the former Elizabeth Cameron on November 24, 1934, at Clayton. Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, two sons, Lloyd and Tony at home; three daughters, Eleanor, Mrs. Donald Wright, Lorna, Mrs. Frank Wright and Helen Command of Appleton; two brothers, Wilfred Command of Ferguson's Falls, and Kenneth Command of KAS, B.C.; also a sister, Mrs. Hilda Cameron of Clayton. The pallbearers were Allie Yuill, William Yuill, William Cameron, John Dickinson, Gordon Elliott and Michael Murray.


October 30, 1969         Mrs. Sheppard Dies-84 Years

            Following a brief illness, Mrs. William A. Sheppard, the former Eliza (Tot) Graham, passed away on October 30, 1969 at the GWM Hospital in Perth, at the age of 84 years. She was born in Dumfries, Scotland. In Saskatchewan, in1913, she was married to the late William Archibald Sheppard. Left to mourn her loss are three sons and three daughters, namely, James and Graham, of Saskatchewan, Edward of British Columbia, Catharine and Ella, Hamilton; Jean (Mrs. Ray McEwen) of Lanark. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and two sisters living in England. The funeral service was conducted on November 1, 1969 from George Young's Funeral Home in Lanark, Ont., to St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery. Rev. Herbert Horsey officiated, assisted by Rev. Charles R. Judd of St. Andrew's United Church in Lanark. Pallbearers were Robert McEwen, Charles Hollinger, Thomas Ireton, Elmer Couch, Thorpe Moulton arid Carmen Crosbie.


January 17, 1970         Mrs. Gardiner Dies - 90 Years

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs. Robert 0. Gardiner at her funeral, which took place on Monday, January 9, 1970, from Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west,  St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville where the service was held at 2 pm. with Rev. H. Horsey, parish priest, assisted by Rev. J. Salter of Stafford, Ont. officiating. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery. Mrs. Gardiner who had resided at Scotch Corners, passed away on January 17, 1970 , at the Four Winds Private Hospital, Perth, following a lengthy illness. She was in her 90th year. Born July 9, 1880, in Beckwith Township, the former Mary Ellen Dowdall, she was a daughter of the late John Dowdall and his wife, the late Margaret Ledgerwood of Cedar Hill, Ont. She attended St. Johns Anglican Church, Innisville. She was predeceased by her husband, the late Robert 0. Gardiner, whom she had married on February 27, 1901, at Cedar Hill. She is survived by two sons, John C. and Clifford H. Gardiner of Scotch Corners; two daughters, Edna (Mrs. Joseph Ireton) of Drummond Centre and Gladys (Mrs. William J. Sample) of Carleton Place; a brother,  Wilbert Dowdall of Perth and a sister, Sara Jane (Mrs. William Downey) of Almonte. In 1967 she was predeceased by a son Herbert 0. Gardiner of Beckwith Twp. and a brother, John Dowdall of Cedar Hill. The pallbearers were Messrs. Oliver Gardiner, James C. Gardiner, Alfred Poole, Lorne Cooke, Lloyd Carnahan and Ross Dezell.


February 3, 1970         J. H.. Chamney Dies - 62 Years

            The funeral of Joseph Henry Chamney, well-known area resident, was held on Friday, February Anglican Church, Innisville, where the service was conducted at 2 p.m. with Rev. H. Horsey, assisted by Rev. E. D. Fleming, officiating. Interment was In St. John's Cemetery, Innisville. Mr. Chamney, who had resided at 176 Town Line, passed away on February 3, In C.P. & D Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 69 years of age. Born in Scotch Corners on December 31, 1900, he was a son of the late George Chamney and his wife the late Bertha Stanley. He attended St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville and was a member of L.O.L. No. 92, Innisville. He had farmed for many years at Scotch Corners before retiring to Carleton Place a few years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Horne; three daughters, Mrs. Murray Code (Muriel) of Drummond, Mrs. Robert Ferguson (Ruth) of Scotch Corners an Mrs. Peter Cann (Joie) of New York; a brother John G. Chamney of C Carleton Place. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward M. Chamney and a sister Mrs. Robert Laidlaw (Anne). The pallbearers were Messrs. James Gardiner, Clifford Gardiner, Oliver Gardiner, Lloyd Carnahan, Ross Dezell and Alfred Poole.

            Friends and relatives from Carleton Place attended the funeral of Mrs. Sterling Graham in Smiths Falls on Saturday, February 28. Mrs. Graham, the former Mildred McCreary, was born in Ramsay, daughter of the late Hiram McCreary and his wife, Catherine McKay. She spent many years in missionary work in China and Egypt. After returning to Canada she and her family resided in Jasper, Ontario. Surviving besides her husband, Rev. Sterling Graham, are two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Taylor (Catherine) Cardinal, Mrs. Johnston Shannon (Mabel) Brockville; one son Keith in Malaysia, three sisters, Mrs. Ebert Blanchard (Annie) Tompkins, Sask., Misses Harriet and Mabel Carleton Place, and one brother Harwood, Glen Isle.


April 4, 1970         W. D. Napier Dies-39 Years

            Final tribute was paid to the memory of William Donald Napier at his funeral which took place on Tuesday, April 7, 1970, from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., to St. James Anglican Church, where the service was held at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. E. D. Fleming officiating. Entombment was in the United Cemeteries with burial to take place in United Cemeteries in the spring. Mr. Napier, who had resided at 254 Lake Ave. west, passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday evening April 4th. He was 39 years of age. Born in Ottawa on September 28, 1930, he was the son of William Napier and his wife, the late Mabel B. Buffam. He was educated in the Carleton Place schools and was a member of St. James Anglican Church where he was a Sunday School teacher. Don, who was quite active in community affairs, was a member of Stella Lodge No. 125, being a Past District Deputy of the Oddfellows. He was also a member of St. John's Lodge A. F.& A. M. Carleton Place; a member of Mississippi Rebekah Lodge and had been on the executive of the Marching Saints Drum Corps. He was employed as a buyer with Computing Devices of Canada Ltd., Bells Corners and had formerly been employed in the pay office at International Nickel Co., Sudbury, Ont. The honorary pallbearers were Messrs. Ernest Buffam, John F. Fraser, Ormond Giles, Roy McKittrick, Ross McCall and Ted Ferrill. The active pallbearers were Messrs. Andy Villeneuve, Lynwood Buffam, Gordon McIntyre, Mac Camelon, Doug Guerard and Eldon Henderson.

May 26, 1970         STEWART, Duncan W.  

        At Carleton Place District Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, May 26, 1970, Duncan W. Stewart, beloved husband of the late Isabel Cavers and dear mother of Alex, Almonte; Neil, Perth; Douglas, Almonte, and Mae, of Ottawa; 9 grandchildren; in his 81st year. Resting at the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte where service will be held on Friday, May 29, at 2 p.m. Interment  United Cemeteries, Carleton Place.


June 1st, 1970         Dr. S. W. Houston Dies - 77 Years

            Dr. Stuart William Houston, a former native of Carleton Place passed away at his late residence 64 College St., Kingston, Ont., on Monday, June 1st, 1970 in his 77th year. Mr. Houston is survived by his wife, the former Christena McDonald, his son, Stuart of Lake Louise, Alta., a brother, Dr. J. F. Houston of Hamilton, two sisters, Mrs. George Loosemore and Mrs. James Gardiner, both of Carleton Place. The funeral took place on Wednesday, June 3rd, from the Robert J. Reid and Sons Funeral Home, corner of Barrie and Johnston Sts., Kingston, to St George's Cathedral where the service was held at 11:15 a.m. Interment took place at the Houston Cemetery on the 8th line of Ramsay.

        Graduate of Queen’s University, class 1920. In hospital at Carleton Place, Ont., Friday, October 2, 1970, Charles Wolseley Ferrill. M.D., C.M. in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Laura McCreary; dear father of Mrs. Percy Hay (Mabel) and Mrs. John R. Stewart (Alice M.) ; also survived by 3 grandsons and 2 great grandsons. Private funeral was held from his late residence, 67 Bridge St., Carleton Place, on Sunday, October 4th. Interment  Boyd’s United Cemetery.

Priest of the Archdiocese of Kingston, formerly assistant priest, St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, former Dean of Studies, Regiopolis College, Kingston, former pastor Sacred Heart Church, Lanark; St. Mary's, Carleton Place; St. Gregory's, Picton;  St. Peter’s, former Dean of Trenton and Belleville area until retirement in 1967. Resting at Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Avenue West, Carleton Place, until Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. Thence to St. Mary’s Church to lie in state until solemn funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.       


December 11, 1970         Miss Quinn Dies - 85 Years

            The funeral of Miss Alice A. Quinn took place on Monday, December, 14, 1970, from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Ave. west, to St. Mary's Church for Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. Rev. P. F. Murphy officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Miss Quinn, who had resided on Napoleon St., passed away in the Pembroke General Hospital, on Friday, December 11, following a short illness. She was 85 years of age. Born in Ferguson's Falls on June 24, 1885, she was a daughter of the late John Quinn and his wife, the late Mary McKittrick. She was the last surviving member of a family of ten. Prior to her retirement, Miss Quinn had been a secretary for many years with the former Renfrew Woollen Mills. She attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and was a member of St. Mary's C. W. L. She Is survived by several nieces and nephews. The pallbearers were Messrs. Frank Quinn, James Quinn, Charles Hollinger and David McCann.


December 20, 1970         Mrs. Cresswell Dies - 78 Years

            The funeral of Mrs. Myrtle Lillian Estelle (Watchorn) Cresswell took place December 22 from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Avenue, to Westlawn Free Methodist Church where Rev. James Poynter and Rev. Bruce Dawson conducted the service. Interment was in Boyd’s United Cemetery, Boyd’s Settlement. The pallbearers were William Munro, Harold Stevens, Donald Strong, Murray HiIIiard, Harold Churchill and Kenneth Campbell. Mrs. Cresswell died tragically as a result of a car accident opposite her Town Line home December 20, 1970. Her death occurred in Memorial Hospital at the age of 78 years. She was born April 27, 1892 at Morin Heights, Que., a daughter of the late Abraham Watchorn and his wife, Mary Ann Seale. She was educated and married there on June 8, 1910 to William John Cresswell. She attended the Free Methodist Church in Carleton Place and belonged to the Women's Institute. Besides her husband, a retired farmer, she is survived by a foster son, Robert N. Cresswell of Shelbyville, Ill.; a foster daughter, Myrtle, Lydia Willa (Watchorn) Strong of Carp; brothers, Rev. W. J. Watchorn of Syracuse, N.Y.; Robert H. Watchorn of Dunnville, Ont., and Ralph A. Watchorn of Pembroke; also a sister, Lois, Mrs. A. E. Collins of Carleton Place.


December 20, 1970         Mrs. Cresswell Killed By Truck

            First road fatality in Carleton Place for several years, Mrs. William J. Cresswell was killed in an accident on the Town Line on Sunday afternoon. Her death occurred about an hour after her admittance to Memorial Hospital. She was 78 years of age. Mrs. Cresswell was returning home with Mrs. Bordon Hilliard after making a hospital visit. She got out of the car beside her Town Line residence, apparently not noticing an approaching vehicle and was struck by a half-ton truck driven Mr. Fred Streit, 27, of Arnprior. Mrs. Cresswell was taken to hospital by the Alan Barker ambulance. The accident was investigated by Constable Bill Shane. Mrs. Cresswell was the former Myrtle Watchorn. Besides her husband , she is survived by a daughter, Willa, Mrs. Kenneth Strong; a son, Robert N., brothers, Rev. W. J. Watchorn, Robert, and Ralph and a sister, Lois, Mrs. A. E. Collins. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Avenue, thence to Westlawn Free Methodist Church for service. Interment will be in Boyd’s United Cemetery.
