Married couples reunion

by Inez McCoy

The UCW members of Boyd's United Church take the lead in originality in their project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. They sponsored a special day, Sunday, Sept. 7, with a church service and luncheon following for all the congregation, with 20 couples who were married in the church since 1925 as special guests.

The church records as far back as 1925 were searched through and invitations for the special day were sent to all the couples who had been married in Boyd's United Church in the following 50 years. When the project was announced by the UCW, it received full support from the official board and members of the congregation.

Among the 30 couples attending the service were 25 children. Coming the farthest distance were Mr.  and Mrs. Thomas Woods of Canastota , NY .

Mr. Robert Bowker was in charge of the service assisted by the Junior Farmer Choir, with Mrs. Thora Pugh, Pakenham, as soloist and Mrs. Heather Skuce, organist of Pakenham United Church at the organ.

During the service Mrs. Pugh sang "Where er'e you walk” and "No Man is an Island ". In his usual story for the children, Mr. Bowker stressed the point of rowing a boat with two oars "Faith" and "Works", not rowing singly, as one oar does not work without the other.

The word “balance" was the subject of Mr. Bowker's sermon. He illustrated the meaning of the word in daily Iife. With balance, one gives a little, bends, adjusts until a balance is obtained and so it is with love, he said. Using examples applicable to all of us and all kinds of situations, he illustrated how balance and love go hand in hand.

Many of the ladies wore their wedding gowns and showed the changing styles in 25 years. The period following service and during the luncheon was a time for picture taking and visiting and reminiscing.

The present church was built in 1875. The first church building was of logs on the grounds of the present cemetery.

Following are the couples married in Boyd's United Church since 1925 with date of their marriage.
