OBITUARY

CLARA JANE POOLE - Clara Jane Poole passed peacefully away Monday, May 6, 1974, at the home of her daughter, Bernice, Mrs. Earl Cowan of Almonte. Mrs. Poole was the eldest daughter of the late Thomas Meredith and his wife, Mary Ann Johnston, and was born September 30, 1878, at Cedar Hill. On January 17, 1906, Clara Jane Meredith married the late George Poole of Pakenham Township, where they farmed until 1922, when they purchased the farm on the 7th line of Ramsay, known as the Steele Farm. Mrs. Poole was an Anglican, belonging to the Guild in St. George's Church, Clayton, for a number of years. Mrs. Poole leaves three daughters to mourn her loss, namely; Luella, Mrs. Stewart Paterson; Marjorie, Mrs. Wilbert McKay, and Bernice, Mrs. Earl Cowan, all of Almonte, and mother to John Mann of Pakenham; and eight grandchildren. Three sisters also survive, Luella, Mrs. W. M. Griffth Oshawa; Archina, Mrs. E, N. Sadler, Haileybury, and Myrtle, Mrs. J. S. Pritchard, Arnprior. Deceased sisters are Loretta, Mrs. R. G. Tripp, Fitzroy Harbour; Lila, Mrs. H. J. Tripp, Arnprior; Roxena, Mrs. T. H. Kippen. White Lake, and Lena Meredith of Arnprior. Funeral service was held from the Comba, Funeral Home, 127 Church, St., Almonte, Ont., on Thursday, May 9, to St. Paul's Anglican Church, Almonte. Rev. G. F. Bickley held a short service at the funeral home singing a favourite hymn of the deceased, "Nearer My God to Thee." Service at the church was conducted by Rev. H. H. Brown of St. George's Church, Clayton and Rev. G. F. Bickley of St. Paul's Anglican Church. Hymns sung were "Rock of Ages" and "For All the Saints Who From Their Labours Rest." Interment took place in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pakenham. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Delmer G. S. Paterson, Allan J. Mann, Raymond J. Cowan, George W. McKay, Harold J. McKay and Arthur C. McKay.

WILLIAM WOOD

The death of William Wood occurred at Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, June 8, after a brief illness. Born in Pakenham township, September 9, 1894, on the homestead, where he resided until his death, he was the youngest son of the late William Y. Wood and his wife Isabelle Moore. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Beatrice Smith, and his oldest son, William Smith Wood. He is survived by a son, Ted, and two daughters, Mrs. Robert Cochran (Jean) R.R.1, Almonte and Mrs. Don Dolan (Reita), Kanata. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home with Rev. Cecil Dodds officiating. Interment was in Pakenham Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carson Timmins, Andy Sadler, John Levi, Wilfred Lindsay, Dr. A. A. Hanna and Kenneth Penman.

SYMINGTON, Charles Earl - In hospital, Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, May 17th, 1987, Charles Earl Symington (Former member of Almonte Town Council), in his 76th year. Beloved husband of Reta Barr. Dear father of Wayne and his wife Lesley, Elaine and her husband Ed, all of Toronto. Dear grandfather of Mark and Andrew Symington, Rod and Ray Davies. Dear brother of Mary McIntyre, Saskatoon; Evelyn McIntyre, Almonte; Alex and Milton Symington both of Arnprior. Friends called at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte for visiting on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thence to St. Paul's Anglican Church on Wednesday at 12 noon until time of Service at 1 p.m. Rev. Jack Truman officiating. Interment St Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Almonte.
Cliff Graham Passes Away

Clifford Wesley Graham, retired Almonte pharmacist, passed away at his home, 157 James street, on Monday, June 24, 1974, following six months of failing health. He was 69. Mr. Graham had been a pharmacist on Mill street for 25 years, before retiring from business in January of this year. He took over the drug store here following the death of his brother Harold, who had opened the business some thirty years ago. Cliff was born on the 9th line of Ramsay on April 19, 1905, a son of the late William John Graham and his wife, Elizabeth Scott Ross. He received his education at Bennie's Corners school, Almonte High School, Alberta College in Edmonton, and the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon. He was a member of Almonte United Church. In 1938 he was married at Toronto to the former Marion Mahaffey, who survives, together with two daughters, Jane of Toronto, and Margaret (Mrs. Peter Buckholtz) of Kingston, and a grandson, Glenn Graham Buckholtz. Also surviving are two brothers, Sheff and Bert Graham, and three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Graham, Mrs. Nina Horton and Mrs. Emma Lawley. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street, Almonte, on Wednesday, June 26th, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. H. H. Brown of Clayton conducted the services. Pallbearers were Wilf Snedden, Art Smith, Carson Johnson, Henry Christie, John Graham and Peter Buckholtz.

HARRY A. McINTOSH

On March 22nd, 1974, following a short illness, Harry A. McIntosh passed quietly away at Lanark Lodge. Born at Clayton Ontario, on January 23rd, 1883, he was in his ninety-second year. A son of the late John and Mary McIntosh, he was the last surviving member of their family of fourteen sons and daughters. On May 1st, 1907, he was united in marriage to Ellen E. Robertson, who survives him, and to that union were born three children; Morley of Perth; Helena (Mrs. M. Roberts) of Lanark, and Margaret (Mrs. L. Duval) of Skaneateles, New York. Also surviving are four grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He attended Public School in the Village of Clayton and later, Dairy School, in Kingston. All of his active years were spent in the dairy business; first in Southern Alberta, later in Lanark and Perth. He was a member of the United Church; also serving on the Town Council in Perth, and was an active member of the Canadian and One Hundred Clubs in that town. Several of his retirement years were spent in the Town of Almonte, where he had many friends. During the past two and one-half years Mr. and Mrs. McIntosh have been residents of Lanark Lodge. Funeral service were held from Blair and Son Chapel, with Rev. Mr. McRae, of Almonte United Church, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in Clayton United Cemetery.

Charlie McKay Dies

A well known Almonte resident, Mr. Charles McKay, passed away Thursday, June 13th, 1974, at the Almonte General Hospital, in his 93rd year. Charlie was the son of the late Thomas McKay and his wife, Annie Rintoul. He was born in Lanark Township, Sept. 29, 1881, and lived on the homestead, where he farmed until March 15, 1949, then came to reside with his nephew, the late Wilbert McKay and his family of Ramsay. For the past 13 years he has lived with his brother, Welland McKay of Almonte. Charlie was well known, a friend of everyone, a great hunter, and a faithful and regular attendant of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Almonte. He leaves to mourn his loss a sister, Esther, Mrs. Mealy of Brandon, Manitoba, who will be 98 June 25, and a brother, Robert Welland, Almonte, who will be 90 Sept. 16. Three sisters and three brothers predeceased him; Margaret, Mrs. J. R. Reid, Almonte; Mary Ann, Mrs. J. Robertson, Manitoba; Hattie, Mrs. J. M. Rodger, Almonte; brothers John McKay of Almonte, Alec and Thomas, both of Sinclair, Manitoba. The funeral was held on Saturday June 15th, at 2.30 from the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte, to the Clayton United Cemetery for burial. Rev. Douglas C. McQuaig of St. John's Presbyterian, Church conducted the services. The pallbearers were James A. McKay, George W. McKay, Harold T. McKay, Arthur C. McKay, Ronald T. McKay and John R. McKay. Honorary pallbearers were, Donald H. Thurston, Roy Rodger, Ashton L. Jackson, Lloyd T. McKay, Alec. McKay and Charlie McKay.

S. R. SCISSONS

The death of S. R. "Bob" Scissons of Ottawa Street, Almonte, took place in the Almonte General Hospital on Wednesday, November 5th, 1975. He was in his 81st year. Mr. Scissons was born on July 5th, 1895, in Dunrobin, the son of the late Thomas Scissons and the late Margaret Ann Ryan. Mr. Scissons was a retail grocer in Almonte for many years. He was a member of St. Mary' Roman Catholic Church in Almonte. Mr. Scissons married Carmel Hurrell on May 18th, 1964, in Carleton Place. Mrs. Scisson survives her husband. Mr. Scissons is predeceased by Morleen Newton, his wife from previous marriage. Surviving is a son, James of Almonte; daughters Madeline of Ottawa; Dorothy (Mrs. Donald Tinslay) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Barbara (Mrs. John Farnham) of Bancroft; and a stepson Lawrence Hurrell of Long Sault. He is predeceased by a son Patrick. Also surviving are brothers Dominic of Dearborn, Michigan U.S.A.; Henry of Kanata; Isadore of Kingston; and sisters Mrs. Teresa Liberty, Almonte; and Mrs. Sarah Carroll of Kanata. Mr. Scissons is also survived by 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, to St. Mary's Church for funeral mass on Saturday, November 8th, at 10:00 a.m.; the Reverend Father K. Milaney officiated. Burial took place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Almonte, Ontario. Pallbearers were the nephews of the deceased, Tom Liberty, Mike Scissons, Desmond Carroll, Raymond Murphy, Chris Newton, and Pat Newton.

WADDELL, Jeannette Mary - in hospital at Almonte on Tuesday, August 7th, 1984. Jeannette Waddell (of Almonte in her 81st year). Beloved daughter of the late Thomas Waddell and his wife the late Jane McMeekin and dear sister of John Waddell of Almonte. Predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Bessie McKee and Lillian Waddell. Rested at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and where service was held on Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. Ken McBurney officiating. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery.
RATH, James Herbert - In hospital at Ottawa on Monday, August 6th, 1984. James Herbert Rath (Of Almonte in his 85th year). Beloved husband of the late Laura Myrtle Paul. Dear father of Elmer, White Lake; James, Clare and Mrs. Bob Timmons (Ann), all of Richmond; Mrs. Ken Forlippa (Mary), Orleans; Wilfred, Thunder Bay; J Raymond, Okotoks, Alberta; Charlie, Clayton and Mrs. John Fulton (Elaine) of Pakenham. Predeceased by a daughter Myrtle. Survived by 29 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Dear brother of Mrs. Muriel Sadler of Carleton Place and Mrs. Alice McMunn of Oxford Mills. MacDONALD, Lillian Eva (Lil) . In hospital at Ottawa on Saturday, March 7th, 1987, Lillian (Lil) Eva Dransfield (of Almonte in her 71st year). Beloved wife of the late Allan O. MacDonald and loving mother of Mrs. Thomas Wilding (Elizabeth) of Shilo, Manitoba; Jim of Nepean; William of Soulnierville, NS; Michael of Almonte and Mrs. Wayne Elliott (Nancy) of Carleton Place. Predeceased by her son Gary 13 days previously. Dear sister of Mrs. Jim Greigson (Viola) of Perth. Predeceased by one brother Howard (Abbey) and two sisters Genevieve and Bernadette. GLEASON, Rosemary - In hospital at Smiths Falls, Ontario, on Thursday, February 25, 1982, ROSEMARY GLEASON (of Dearborn, Michigan and formerly of Smiths Falls and Almonte). In her 78th year. The beloved daughter of the late James Gleason and his wife, the late Catherine Hunt and dear sister of John P. of Almonte. Predeceased by one bother William and three sisters, Mary (Mrs. John Jordan), Ann (Mrs. Leo Swift), and Nora. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. McMunn, Alice born at Clayton in 1901, Alice Catherine (Rath) McMunn joined Jesus in eternity January 15, 1989 after a seven-week illness in Kemptville hospital. Daughter of James and Catherine Rath, she is predeceased by sisters Mildred and Ethel, brother Herbert and husband Fraser McMunn, whom she married in 1924. As a teenager she took piano and as a young adult began teaching piano skills to many. From 1934-54 she lived with her family in Pakenham township and then moved to the Stittsville area. After her husband's death in 1965 she moved with her daughter Beula's family to a farm near Oxford Mills. She served as church organist in St. George's, Clayton, St. Paul's, Hazeldean and St. Augustine's, Acton's Corners. Her music brought joy to many weddings, Christmas concerts and other special occasions. Surviving are her son Ronald of Carleton Place, daughters Beula (Mrs. Ron Cooke), Oxford Mills and Margaret (Mrs. Rod Palmer), Richmond, B.C. and sister Muriel Sadler of Carleton Place. The family greeted friends at the Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place on Wednesday, January 18 and the funeral was held in St. George's Church, Clayton at 11 Thursday morning. Rev. Patricia Stewart officiated, assisted by Rev. Allan Lauder, Kemptville; Rev. Lorne Mitchell Oxford Mills and Rev. Don Spencer-Lee, Oxford Station. Readers were Margaret Graham and Florence Vavasour. Former music student Margaret Scott played the organ. Pallbearers were grandsons Brian and Brent Cooke, Jeff and Jamie McMunn and former music pupils Ian Moffitt and Billy Crawford. Honourary pallbearers were nephews Keith McKnight and James Rath, and church associates Bob Parfitt and Garnet Tompkins. Spring interment will be in Clayton Anglican Cemetery.

BONNIE LYNN McCARTNEY

On Sunday, Sept. 1, 1974, Bonnie Lynn McCartney, 17, of R.R. 4 Pakenham, was Instantly killed as the result of a motor accident on Highway 17. Bonnie is the beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave McCartney (nee Shirley Smith). Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers' and three sisters, Bill, Bruce, Beverly, Shelly and Sheila, all at home; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James McCartney, Pakenham, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Box, Almonte, and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Smith, Stittsville, and great grand parents, Mrs. Bill Smith and Mrs. Horace, Almonte. Born in 1957, she received her education in Pakenham and Almonte Public Schools and Almonte High School. Rev. George F. Bickley conducted the funeral service on Wednesday Sept. 4th, from the home of her parents, with burial in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Pallbearers were Ronnie and Gary Smith, Dennis Greene, Bill Grainger, Terry and Raymond Smithson.
