George Hilliard Passes

George Hilliard, Warden of Lanark County and Reeve of Ramsay Township, died in Ottawa Civic Hospital, Thursday, January 9, 1975, after a short illness of four weeks. Born in Ramsay Township, Feb. 3, 1903, Mr. Hilliard was the son of the late Robert Hilliard and his wife, Catherine Proctor. He received his education at SS No.5 (Galbraith's School), 5th line of Ramsay. He left school in 1916 on "farm leave" and farmed ever since that time, with his father and brother, Borden, and later with Borden. Mr. Hilliard served as a director and president of the former Goodwood Rural Telephone Co. He was a member of St. James Anglican Church. For nine years Mr. Hilliard was a councillor in Ramsay Township and for nine years was reeve of the township. He became Warden of Lanark County in January, 1974 and was Warden at the time of his death. He was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party. Mr. Hilliard strongly supported the Carlan Lodge board of directors in their work to have the building of the lodge approved. He was in charge of Ramsay township campaign in the public subscription canvass to be held soon. Among floral tributes and donations to charities, a substantial amount has been donated in his memory to the construction of Carlan Lodge. Mr. Hilliard is survived by his sister, Eliza of Perth and two brothers, Borden of Ramsay and T. Richard, present deputy minister of agriculture in the Ontario legislature. He leaves two nephews, Murray and Mervyn on the home farm with a grand nephew, Robbie, and a nephew and niece. Timothy and Marcia of Toronto. The funeral was held from the Barker Funeral Home to St. James Anglican Church, Monday January 13 for service at - 2.15 p.m. Rev. F. A. McGregor officiated, assisted by Archdeacon John A. Salter of Almonte. Entombment followed at the Auld Kirk for burial at St. George's Cemetery, Clayton in the spring. The funeral was one of the largest ever in this area. Honorary pallbearers included: Paul Dick, M.P., and Douglas Wiseman, M.L.A., as well as former wardens of the county; Gordon James, Ossie Rothwell, Reginald Warren, Stanley Brunton and John Creighton. Also acting as honorary pallbearers were the following reeves of Lanark County; Ray Poole, John Cochran, Charlie Miller, Stewart Munro, Bill Moore, Harry Haveron, Allan Code and county engineer, Bob Strachan. The following members of Ramsay township council were also honorary pallbearers; Bob Cochran, Douglas Stewart, Ralph Monette, and Ronald Robertson, as well as Robert Brydges, township clerk and former township clerk, George Thompson. The active pallbearers were; Murray and Mervyn Hilliard, nephews, Howard Hilliard of Renfrew, a cousin, and three neighbours, Alex Hazelwood, James Paul and Kelvin Rintoul. A TRIBUTE - The following is a tribute paid to the late Mr. Hilliard by a friend: "Although George has been taken from our midst may we all rejoice that we have the opportunity of being better citizens in our community because of our association with him. "For those of us who had the opportunity of working with George in municipal affairs, he leaves us with fond memories of the past and inspiration to continue with the zeal and unselfish dedication which he clearly displayed in his many years of service to Ramsay Township, Lanark County and his fellow men. "George will be sadly missed by family and friends alike because not only was he a good and kind man but a strong and dedicated public servant. "We will always remember George for his kind manner but more particularly for his ability to add a sharp and witty remark at precisely the right time to enlighten an otherwise troubled or dreary moment."

RUSSELL GORDON KENNY

On Friday, October 25th, 1974, in Almonte General Hospital, one of Almonte's oldest business men, in the person of Russell Kenny passed away in his 82nd year. Russell was born on the family homestead in Goulbourn the youngest son of James Kenny and Flora MacMillan. Several years later the family moved to Ramsay. In 1926 he married Evelyn Boyce of Almonte where they made their home. Russell worked as lineman for the Lanark and Carleton Telephone Company for a number of years and for the past 32 years had his own business in town. He was a member of Almonte United Church. He is survived by his widow, two daughters and a son; Marguerite, (Mrs. Norman Thirion) of Westlake Village, California; Barbara (Mrs. John Hilliker) of Vancouver; Boyce of Duncan B.C. V.I.; and eight grandchildren. Surviving also are his brother Lorne of Ottawa and his sister Ethel (Mrs. Gordon Wallace) of Toronto. Five sisters and two brothers predeceased him, Edith (Mrs. Elmer Campbell); Violet (Mrs. George Speiran); Pearl (Mrs. Andrew Argue); Georgie (Mrs. Charles Dake); Edna; Bert and Cameron. The funeral was held October 27th, 1974 from the Kerry Funeral Home in Almonte with interment at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. Robt. McCrea and Rev. Bob Hill conducted the service. Pallbearers were; Jack Campbell, Gregg Brown, Bill Campbell, Dean Drynan, Melville MacGregor and Gervais Finner.

ARTHUR DAVID MATHER

Mr. Arthur David Mather passed away at the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital on January 21st, after a lengthy illness. He was in his 70th year. Mr. Mather was born at Middleville, Ontario, on August 28th, 1905, the son of George Mather and his wife, the former Maude Anderson, who pre deceased him. He received his education at Middleville and Lanark. On November 17th, 1935, he married the former Mary Carnahan, who survives. He is survived by three daughters, Lois (Mrs. Bill Blakely) of Stirling, Ont., Eileen (Mrs. Earl Dennie) of Arnprior and Loraine (Mrs. Glen Manarey) of Almonte, and by six grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters, Elva (Mrs. O'Donaghue) of Smiths Falls, Jean (Mrs. Harold Millier) of Syracuse, New York, and Beatrice (Mrs. John Ball) of Smiths Falls, and by brothers Harry and Ivan of Middleville, Ross in Saskatchewan and Oris at Arnprior. A brother Keith predeceased him. Mr. Mather farmed for a number of years in Ramsay township, and was then employed at the woolen mill until his retirement two years ago. He attended the Congregational Church at Middleville. The funeral service was conducted at the chapel of the Alan Barker funeral home by the Rev. Kenneth Murray. Pallbearers were Elmer Rath, James Rath, Carl Currie, Glen Miller, Harold Mather, Bill Hawkins. Interment will be at Middleville in the spring.

CHARLES E. BELLAMY

There passed away on Saturday, May 10th, 1975 a member of one of the oldest families in the Clayton district in the person of Charles Ewart Bellamy. Death occurred at the Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, after a short illness. He was 67. Mr. Bellamy was born in Clayton on December 14th, 1908, the son of John E. Bellamy and his wife Catherine Bolger, both descendants of Pioneer families in that area of Ramsay Township. His father's family were the founders of Clayton, known then as Bellamy's Mills. Charles attended the local school at Clayton and the Almonte High School. In 1926 he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he entered the employ of Hygrade Food Products Corporation. He had the distinction of becoming the vice-president of the company some years prior to his retirement in 1969. He was married in 1928 to Winona Doherty who survives, along with a sister, Helen (Mrs. J. R. Chisholm, Ottawa), a brother William of Clayton and four nephews, John, Wilmer and Allan Bellamy of Perth and Ray Bellamy of Resolute Bay, N.W.T. Another brother, Powell, predeceased him in 1950. Mr. Bellamy was a member of Ionic Blue Lodge No. 474 F. & A. M. Sea Hill Rite Shrine of Detroit. A Masonic service was held at Schoedinger N. W. Chapel in Columbus on May 11. Burial was in Dublin Cemetery, Columbus, following a service conducted by Dr. R. Claire Warden on May 12, 1975. A large number of friends and associates from Columbus and Detroit were in attendance.

James H. Steele Dies Suddenly

Residents of Almonte and the surrounding farming community were saddened to learn of the sudden passing of James Harold Steele of the 8th line of Ramsay, on the morning of Friday, May 24th. Mr. Steele had gone to the mailbox about 10 a.m., when he was apparently stricken with a heart attack . He was in his 78th year. Mr. Steele was born on the 8th line of Ramsay, on April 26, 1897, a son of the late John Steele and his wife, Amy Coulter. Raised on one of Ramsay's pioneer farms in a family of brothers and sisters who chose a wide variety of careers, Jimmie, as he was affectionately known in his community, modestly referred to himself as a "tiller of the soil." It was his love of the land, his great knowledge of agricultural production and his ability to recognize and adapt to modern tillage methods, new strains and varieties of crops that enabled him to establish a reputation of being an outstanding agriculturist. Jimmie in his own quiet way was always prepared to share his experience, his knowledge and his energies with his friends and neighbours and help them in this way to share the success he realized in his own chosen career. In fraternal circle he was a member of Mississippi Lodge No. 147, A.F. and AM., Almonte, and was a Toronto Shriner. A Masonic service was held Saturday evening at 7.30 p.m. at the funeral home. He was married on September 19, 1934, Almonte, to the former Elsie Barker, who survives together with two sons, John of Almonte and Gerald, Montreal, and a daughter, Jessie (Mrs. Gordon Henderson) of Ottawa. Also surviving are two brothers, Art of Ottawa and Ernest of Toronto and two sisters, Beth (Mrs. Hal Kirkland) of Almonte, and Louise of Cobourg. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, May 26th, at 2 o'clock from the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church street, Almonte, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery for burial. Rev. A. C. Dodds of Pakenham, conducted the services. The pallbearers were Jack Snedden, Stewart Manary, Ken Duncan, Robert Cochran, Jim Cochran and Bob Naismith. Honorary pallbearers were James Jamieson, James and, Bill Serson and Cedric Mohr.

DAVID RAYCROFT

The death of David Clarence Raycroft of Clayton, former reeve of Darling Township, occurred at the Grace Hospital Ottawa, September 17, 1975, after a short illness. He was 71. Mr. Raycroft served as reeve of Darling Township for 15 years from 1949 to 1967, and was Warden of Lanark Township in 1959. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge, A.F. & A.M., Lanark. Born in Darling Township on October 3, 1904, he was a son of the late William Raycroft and his wife, Sarah Small. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Christena King. He is survived by sons Clarence David Raycroft, Almonte, and Raymond Gordon Raycroft, Clayton; daughters Sadie (Mrs. Ronald Barr) Carleton Place; Doris (Mrs. Alex Munro), Almonte; and Kathleen (Mrs. Bert Hoare), Ottawa. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Richard Evans (Christena), Pakenham; Mrs. Orville Peever (Elizabeth), Arnprior; Mrs. Bert (Theresa), Braeside, and Mrs. S. L. Saunders (Maude), of Ottawa. He was predeceased by a brother, William, and sisters Isabel (Mrs. W. Smithson) and Helen (Mrs. Lawrence Wilson). The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home on Friday, September 19, with burial at Clayton United Cemetery. Rev. Robert McCrea conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Bill Evans, Gordon Raycroft, Eric McKay, Bill McVey, Bill Storie and Cecil King. Flower bearers were Donald Raycroft, Allen Raycroft, Bill Barr, Dale Barr, Clark Munro and David Munro.

MISS SARAH JAMES, R.N.

Miss Sarah James passed away in Lanark Lodge, Perth, on Monday, March 31, in her 93rd year. Sadie, as she was known to all, was born on the James homestead, Concession 12, Lanark Township, daughter of Eleanor Ennis and William Hill James. After a successful nursing career in Port Huron, Michigan, she came to Carleton Place in 1943 and took up residence with her brother Frank, who predeceased her in 1960. Sadie continued her nursing in Almonte and Carleton Place hospitals for a number of years. She was a faithful member of St. James Anglican Church, Carleton Place, and had been given a Life Membership in the A.C.W. of St. James. Funeral services were held in the Alan R. Barker Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, April 1, with interment in St. George's Cemetery, Ramsay Township. Rev. H. H. Brown conducted the funeral services. She was predeceased by sisters; Emma, Mrs. R. A. Montgomery, Oak Lake, Manitoba; Bertha, Mrs. W. T. Hands, Drummond Township; Mary, Mrs. W. J. Rothwell, Ferguson Falls; Gladys of Lanark Township, Nellie, Mrs. Jas. M. Warren, Balderson; and three brothers, William E. of Lanark Township, Frank of Jasper, Alta., and Carleton Place, and Harold of Port Alberni, B.C. Sadie is survived by nineteen nieces and nephews of the surrounding area and of Oak Lake, Manitoba. The pallbearers were six grand-nephews John W. R. James, Charlie James, Ennis James, Stephen Bartlett, John Warren and Don Rothwell.

LOWE, William James (Jim) - Suddenly at Fairview Manor, Almonte, on Thursday, December 29, 1977, Jim Lowe of Pakenham, in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late Annabelle Kirk and by second marriage the late Sarah Ritchie, and dear father of Mrs. William Barr (Mabel) of Almonte; Arthur of Cedar Hill; Herbert of Braeside: Russell of Cedar Hill; Mrs. Harvey Wagner (Amelia) of Smiths Falls and Mrs. 0sler Steen (Margaret) of Bells' Corners. Dear step-father of Mrs. Elmer Goodfellow (Irene), of Almonte. Also survived by six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Rested at the Gamble & Comba, Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte where service was held on Saturday at 2.0o p.m. Rev. A. C. Dodds officiating. Spring interment Auld Kirk Cemetery.

Gordon M. Hill Passes Away

The death of Gordon Mills Hill, former Almonte automobile dealer, occurred in a Kingston hospital on Wednesday, November 28th. 1973, following a rather lengthy illness. He was in is 55th year. Mr. Hill was well known in Almonte, having been the proprietor of Hill Motors on Bridge Street for several years. He started the business in 1945 and operated it until he sold out in 1964. Born at Richmond on January 20, 1919, he was a son of the late Harold Hill and his wife, the former Maud Dobson. He received his education at Richmond school and Ottawa Technical School. During the Second World War he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, and was a former member of the Almonte Curling Club. Besides his wife, the former Muriel McDougall, he is survived, by a nephew, Douglas Wartman, and two nieces, Sharon, Mrs. Ron Payne, and Janice Wartman, all of Kingston. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin St., on Friday afternoon, with burial at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. G. F. Bickley of St. Paul's Church. Pallbearers were two cousins, Mervyn Brownlee of Brockville and Ronald Brownlee, Ottawa, Dr. A. A. Hanna and Edgar Carroll, Almonte, George Eady of Carleton Place, and a brother-in-law, Sherman Wartman of Kingston.

PAMELA HAMILTON

Great shock and sorrow was experienced on Monday, November 19, 1973 when news was received of the sudden death of Pamela May Hamilton at Almonte General Hospital youngest daughter of Frank Hamilton and his wife Edith Virgin of Huntley Township. Pamela, who was born February 28, 1963 is survived by her parents and Allan, R.R. 4, Almonte, Heather (Mrs. Robert Clement), Almonte and Sandy and Gwen at home. She was predeceased by a brother Ivan and was granddaughter of Mr. Harry Hamilton, Carleton Place and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Virgin, Clayton. Pam was a popular pupil at Huntley Centennial School and was in attendance in grade six until the beginning of her short illness. The body rested at the Kerry Funeral Home Almonte where service was held on Wednesday, November 21 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Robert McCrea of the United Church, where Pam had been a faithful Sunday School member. The pallbearers were six uncles, Bill Stewart, Ivan Hamilton, Alex Hamilton, Albert Hamilton, Robert McKenzie and Nathan Virgin. Flower bearers were Arnold Virgin, Alfred Hamilton, Robbie McKenzie, Bruce Stewart, Donald Stewart and Kevin O'Connell. Pam's funeral was attended by a great number of friends. Burial was in the family plot at the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

DOWDALL - In hospital at Carleton Place, Ontario, on Sunday, September 25, 1977, Hiram Stanley Dowdall, beloved son of the late Adeline Stanley and Hiram Dowdall. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Cardiff. In his 65th year. Resting at the Kerry Funeral Home, 61 Lake Avenue West, Carleton Place, after 7 p.m. Monday, thence to St. John's Anglican Church, Innisville, for service on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment St. John's Cemetery.

Charlie Finner Passes

Almonte and area lost one of its best known and highly regarded citizens in the death of Charles William Finner at the Almonte General Hospital on Saturday, December 21, 1974, following a short illness of only three days. He was 69. Mr. Firmer was born on August 5, 1905, on the 12th line of Pakenham, a son of John Joseph Firmer and his wife, Margaret Ann Farrell. He received his education at the school at Osceola. For 19 years, prior to this retirement four years ago, he was employed as a tool and die maker with Findlays, Ltd., in Carleton Place. He was a member of the Almonte Utilities Commission for the past 13 years, and in the recent municipal elections was re-elected for his seventh term. He served as chairman of the Commission in 1969-70. He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic- Church, Almonte and a member of both the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. Charlie, as he was familiarly called, was well known through out the valley, having supplied the sound system for innumerable fall fairs, entertainments and other events in the district. He was an accomplished fiddler and square dance caller and for 28 years had his own orchestra, the Hayshakers. On two occasions he had called squares for Don Messer and His Islanders. On January 9, 1928, he was married at St. Mary's Church, Almonte, to the former Gertrude Bolton, who survives, together with five sons and one daughter: Earl of Thunder Bay; Bernard, Almonte; Patsy (Mrs. Jack Hamill) Regina, Sask.; John, Eaton Rapids, Mich.; Dean, Plymouth, Mich.; Wayne, Aylmer, Quebec; six grandsons and five grand daughters. Also surviving are three brothers, Felix, Dominic and Gervase, all of Almonte and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Pendergrass), Sydney, Nova Scotia and Sister Gervase Lucy, of Cobourg. He was predeceased by two brothers, Isaiah and Hilary. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, on Monday morning, December 23, to St. Mary's Church for funeral mass at 10, o'clock, with Father K. Milaney officiating. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery. The pallbearers were Gervase Finner, Joe Bolton, Lorne Wilson, Angus O'Keefe, Lloyd Blackburn and Brian Gallagher.

JESSIE B. METCALFE

Mrs. Jessie B. (Anderson) Metcalfe, widow of the late Wilfred H. Metcalfe of R.R.2, Almonte, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 1975, at the Charlotte Nursing Home in Carleton Place, following a lengthy illness. She was in her 82nd year. She was born at Hopetown on February 8, 1893, a daughter of the late W. W. Anderson and his wife, Henrietta Watson. She received her education at Hopetown and at S.S. No. 14, Ramsay. Mrs. Metcalfe was a member of Almonte Baptist Church, and was married at the local church to Mr. Metcalfe, who predeceased her in 1963. She is survived by three sons, William G. and Raymond K., both of Almonte, and Wilmer W. of St. Catherines; two brothers, William J. Anderson, Almonte, and G. W. Anderson, Carman, Manitoba, and two sisters, Margaret, Mrs. H. Cable, Perth, and Lucy, Mrs. W. L. Thompson, of Ottawa. Predeceased are one son, Harry R.; a brother, Robert A. Anderson of Cornwall, and a sister, Mary, Mrs. Thomas Thompson of Newboro, Ontario. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte, on Saturday, January 11th at 2 p.m. with interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. William Leaton officiated. Pallbearers were Robert Metcalfe of Ottawa, Perry, Bruce and Dale Metcalfe of Almonte, Garry Metcalfe, St. Catharines, and David Metcalfe, Guelph, Ontario.

SARAH JANE DOWNEY

Final tribute was paid to the memory of Mrs. William John Downey at her funeral, which took place on Monday, August 13th, 1973, from the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte, to St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham, where the service was held at 2.30, p.m. The rector, the Rev. Douglas Roberts assisted by Archdeacon John A. Salter of Almonte officiating. Interment was in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pakenham. Mrs. Downey, a former well known resident of Pakenham, passed away at the Almonte Nursing Home, Almonte, on Friday, August 10th 1973, following a lengthy illness. She was in her 89th year. Born March 7, 1885 in Beckwith Township, the former Sarah Jane Dowdall. She was a daughter of the late John Dowdall and his wife, the late Margaret Matilda Ledgerwood of Cedar Hill, Ont. She attended St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham. She was predeceased by her husband John A. Menzies by first marriage, September, 1906, and William John Downey by second, marriage, October, 1950. She is survived by one son, William Harvey Downey of Pakenham; one daughter, Margaret Ellen Menzies (Mrs. Melville Stanley) of Almonte; one step-son (Charles A. Menzies) of Innisville; also six grandchildren, Mervyn, Alvin and Donald Downey, Doreen (Mrs. Ronald Lindsay,) Beverley (Mrs. Dwayne Phillips) all of Pakenham; Lois (Mrs. Robert G. Cavanagh) of Kinburn and twelve great grandchildren. The pallbearers were Messrs. Robert Menzies, Lancelet Downey, Clifford Gardiner, Kenneth Towey, John Langford and Joe Bowman.

JOSEPH H. LADOUCEUR

A well known Clayton resident, Joseph A. H. Ladouceur, passed away on Christmas day at the Almonte General Hospital following an injury that occurred on December 2, 1974. He was 87 years of age. Born on October 18, 1887, on Calumet Island, he was a son of the late Antoine Ladouceur and his wife, the late Marie Louis Meilleur. He received his education on Calumet Island and on November 21st, 1910, was married in St. Peter's Church, Fort Coulonge, Quebec, to the former Marie Jennie Julianne, who survives. They later moved to Darling Township where Mr. Ladouceur farmed until his retirement ten years ago. He was a member of St. Church. Besides his wife, Mr. Ladouceur is survived by five sons: Henri, Maberly, Ontario; Camille and Cyril, of Clayton and Joe R. and Fred of Almonte, and four daughters: Therese (Mrs. David Reid), Larence (Mrs. John H. Munro), and Anne (Mrs. Bob Yuill), of Almonte, and Florence (Mrs. Elmer Reid), of Lanark. Also surviving are a brother, Isidore Ladouceur of Timmins, Ontario, and a sister, Wilda (Mrs. Alf Knuth) of London, Ontario. Also survived by 30 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 27th, from the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, to St. Mary's Church for Funeral Mass at 2, p.m. Father K. Milaney conducted the services. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Almonte. Pallbearers were sons Henri, Camille, Cyril and Joseph and sons-in-law Elmer Reid and Bob Yuill.

JONES - In hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, on Saturday, October 2nd, 1976. Ila Mae Elizabeth Munro, beloved wife of the late George Jones. Dear step-mother of Phyllis (Mrs. Ted Boal), Lively; Vivian (Mrs. Alfred Harrington), Richmond; Gladys (Mrs. Edgar Wilson), Ottawa; Kenneth Jones, Okemos, Michigan; dear sister of Kathleen (Mrs. Gordon Thom), Almonte; Lottie (Mr. Wilbert Belford), Pakenham; Raymond Munro, Toronto. Rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, where service was held on Monday at 2 p.m. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery.
