Kent County is located near the South-Western tip of Ontario, between London and Windsor. It was created in 1792 and from 1792 to 1849 was part of the Western District

The largest city is Chatham, which currently has a population of about 43 500. Kent County is bounded on the west by Essex County, on the south by Lake Erie, on the east by Middlesex and Elgin Counties, and on the north by Lambton County. To the west of Dover township is Lake St. Clair, the smallest of the Great Lakes.

Townships and Towns in Kent County

Restructuring: Officially, in 1999, none of the above cities, towns and townships exist anymore; they are all part of the new Municipality of Chatham-Kent. However, historical records will continue to be filed under the old names, so the general rule is to go with whatever name was being used at the time of the record you're looking for.

In 1846 Kent County consisted of the following Townships:

East Dover
West Dover
East Tilbury
