Obituary of Jane Elizabeth McCann Hamilton of Colborne Township died February 1924

Signal - Feb. 28, 1924, Goderich, Ontario, Canada

The Late Mrs. Hamilton - One of the oldest pioneers of this district has been removed by the death of Mrs. Thomas Hamilton, which occurred on Thursday, February 11th, at the great age of eighty five years. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Ireland, her maiden name being Mary Jane McCann (name in obit is incorrect). At the age of nine years she came to this country with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCann (name of father is incorrect - should be George) . They settled on the 12th consession of Colborne where the deceased lived until at the age of eighteen years, she was married to the late Thomas Hamilton . The young couple made their home on the 8th concession of Colborne on the second farm east from where Young's schoolhouse is located. At that time that part of the township was still densely wooded.

A large family, five sons and five daughters, remain to mourn the loss of their mother: Thoma of Colborn; George of Auburn; Joseph (V.S.) of Dungannon; David of West Wawanosh; Dr. Benson of Sault Ste Marie, Ont.; Mrs. Richard Sprung of Saskatoon; Mrs. Albert Goldthorpe and Mrs. J.J. Robertson of Colborne; Mrs. Samuel Johnson of West Wawanosh, and Mrs. James Johnston of Auburn.

Mrs. Hamilton was a very industrious woman always ready to assist in times of sickness or necessity. She was an Anglican and one of the promoters of the Anglican Church at Auburn. The funeral took place on the 16th last, from the residence of her son, David Hamilton, West Wawanosh, to Maitland cemetery, Goderich. Rev. W.B. Hawkins of Blyth officiated, and the pallbearers were Joseph McCann, Alex Young, Isaac Currie, George Currie, Samuel Johnston and Richard Ryan. All the members of the family were present except Dr. Benson Hamilton. Mrs. Sprung has been here for some time.

Submitter Janice Hamilton Howe Durham, North Carolina

Note: This obit is the mother of Dr. Benson Hamilton (my grandfather). She also submits obits for her grandmother Ella Ross Hamilton wife of Benson Hillyard Hamilton, as well as her father John Ross and her mother Jane Robson Ross.
