World War I Draft Registration Cards
Surname
Shortly
after entering World War I, a law was passed requiring
all men aged 18 to 45 to complete draft registration
cards. All males born between 1873 and 1900 were required
to register for the draft unless they were already
serving in the military. The registrations were held on
three separate dates: 5 Jun 1917, 5 Jun 1918, and 12 Sep
1918. Only a small percentage of those who filled out a
draft card were actually drafted into the military.
Finding a relative's draft card does NOT mean there will
be a military record. These records are not easy to read, but I have done my best to pull out the information I can. I have used abbreviations from what is on the actual cards in order to try to get space to add more information off of the cards. Unfortunately, there were different terms and forms used for the 3 different registration dates. (Example: Some cards will list race as "White" while other cards will say "Caucasian", and one of the cards does not list a place of birth, while another does not have a place for nearest relative.) The information that I could not read was left blank. Most of the occupations are listed as farming. In the notes section I am putting other occupations that may be listed, and/or nearest relative, more specific birth place information, or other information that is noteworthy. It might be worth checking with the Railroad Retirement Board if your person of interest is listed as a Railroad Worker. |
These are some of the abbreviations I have used: White = W Black = B Indian = I Cherokee = C Slender = Slnd Lt = Light Br = Brown Dk = Dark CN = Cherokee Nation |
