Christopher Springer was born in Germany in 1849 and came to USA prior to 1870. He arrived in Pittsburg County in 1870 per his McAlester Masonic Blue Lodge papers. He worked on the building of the MKT railroadthrough McAlester in the early 1870s. In 1905 he served as Mayor of McAlester (now called North McAlester or old town). His name is listed in the 1905 city directory as Mayor. Although he was ofGerman ancestry and had no Choctaw blood, he learned to speak Choctaw.  He was a druggist and owned the Springer Drug Company in North McAlester.  He was active in the Grand Avenue Methodist Church, Trustee of the library, Vice President of the Bank, and very active in the Masonic Lodge holding many
titles as well as serving as Grand Master of Oklahoma.  He was also instrumental in the building of the Royal Arch Masonic Temple called Mount Moriah on a mountain on the outskirts of McAlester. The building of the temple started in 1908 and continued until 1914. The temple was used by masons until 1925. (Records about Mount Moriah are in the McAlester Public Library in McAlester)
He died in July 1926 and was buried in the Oak Hill Masonic Cemetery.

Fritz SITTEL, born 25 Jan 1863 in Germany, immigrated with his parents,  Edward and Lena Tronnier Sittel.
Ed, Lena, and son Fritz came by sea on  a ship named America. It sailed from Bremen, Germany and arrived in New  York on 7 Nov 1864. They traveled from New York to Baltimore, Maryland  and stayed with friends.
From there, Ed traveled to Indian Territory in  1870 leaving Lena and Fritz in Baltimore. Edward Sitttel had the job of  "official hunter; he brought in meat..."* to feed the railroad work  crews. Upon completion of the railroad, he sent for Lena and his son  Fritz. Lena and Fritz "arrived in McAlester, Indian Territory, 10  o'clock Monday, Sept. 7, 1871"*. She is known as the "First White  Woman" to live in McAlester.

Jacob Henry DuPont

My Great Grandfather, Jacob Henry DuPont came to McAlester with the MKT railroad. Lived in the section house just north
of north town. Was married to Mary Wycoff DuPont. Children were Scott, Flora, Daniel, Sarah, Oliver. Flora and Scott went
to Edmond Doyle grade school, then when St. Joseph's catholic school opened, were sent by horse to the catholic school in
Krebs, Ok. A story of Great Grandmother Mary Wycoff DuPont taking young Flora and Scott with her back to Ohio and
bringing back railroad supplies in a covered wagon. The children played along as she drove the wagon. At night she would bed
the children down then sleep with her back up against a tree with a shotgun across her lap. I have more stories from my
grandmother, Flora DuPont about growing up with the Katy railroad.
