Dear Fellow Genealogists;
On July 4, 1997, I hope you all gravely thought about why we celebrate Independence Day. At Philadelphia in the summer of 1776, the Delegates of the Continental Congress courageously signed a document declaring the independence of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain. Not only did the Declaration of Independence create a Nation, but it also pronounced timeless democratic principles, and symbolizes the eternal freedom and dignity of man.
I have been fortunate to be able to take a tour of Washington D. C., and relearn the great historic moments of that time. Would any one of us, under those circumstances, have been so brave and courageous to do as they did, for by signing that document they would have been hanged, or put to death, had they been caught by the British. What a great Nation the made for us.
In the second quarter we have been having some very informative programs at out meetings. The April program consisted of Christy Siemsen's sources of research in the Society's Library, by using THE SOURCE, THE HANDY BOOK FOR GENEALOGISTS, THE BLUE BOOK, and other book sources that I never even thought about. Joe Todd, Archivist of the Oklahoma State Historical Society, was the speaker of the June meeting. He spoke on preserving documents and the documents that are available in the State Historical Library. The speakers for the June program were Garvin Morris and his son. They own the Woodward Monument Co., and spoke on the different types of stone used in the monuments, how to clean them, take rubbings, repair them, and how the engraving is done.
We were very thankful for the computer that has been donated to the Northwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society, by the Woodward Library. It has a CD Rom and we do have some CD's donated by Norman Solbrack and Gwen Hewett. We do hope more will be donated, but we do plan to buy what is needed as time goes on.
As with everything, there is responsibility. SO we have to have rules for the use of the computer, like no foreign floppy disks can be used. Disks provided by the society are to be used only, at a charge of $1.00 per disk. Information printed off the printer is 10 cents a sheet. Use of the computer is available to anyone, ONLY if there is a specified volunteer in the library.
I am happy to announce that we have had many members become volunteers. Don't be afraid to become a volunteer as we will teach you how to use the computer, and we will post the rules and regulations for your help. This will make the computer more assessable to everyone.
Well this must come to a close, so I will see you at the meeting.
Your President,
