June 25, 1908

The Courier has a sad duty to perform this week, one in which the entire community grieves. It is to chronicle the death of William Kivlehen, one of the best men of the county. As all of his acquaintances knew, Mr. Kivlehen has not been in good health for the past year or two, being affected with some kind of heart trouble. This season he entered the harvest as usual and was driving the header Friday afternoon, when a sickness came on him and he came very near falling off the machine, but some of the men who were helping him in the harvest assisted him to the ground and he was carried to his late residence where all that medical science and loving friends and relatives could do was done but he gradually sank until 6:40 Saturday morning, June 19, he passed away, respected and honored by all his acquaintances. He is survived by his wife, four children, father, mother, two brothers and tow sisters. He was a member of the local Woodman Lodge and Tyrian Lodge, A.F. and A. M. The funeral was not held until Sunday, so as to allow several relatives to be present, when the Masonic breathern took charge of the same as was his request. The ceremonies occurred in the M B Church, being conducted by Rev Wayne Mettler, after which the body was laid to rest in the Mooreland cemetery. The church did not hold only about half the people who came to pay their last respects to a first—class citizen, a kind husband and father. May his dear ones realize that his passing away was only what comes to all ‘sooner or later. The relatives have the sympathies of all their acquaintances in this dark time. Mr. Kivlehen was born in Amboy, New Jersey, on December 8, 1865, but passed most of his life in the west. He was one of the first permanent residents of this county, having had charge of the Santa Fe section, where this town is located, before the country was opened to white settlement. Afterward he homesteaded the farm where the family now resides. Mr. Kivlehen was always recognized as one of the best men of the community in all walks of life.
