These clippings were taken from an old scrapbook of NWOGS Editors. The year 1944 is hand written on all of them. Some have Enid or OK written on the also. This would indicate that the articles were taken from Enid and Oklahoma City newspapers.

Leedy Gunner Killed In Kwajalein Battle

WOODWARD, March 10 - (Special) Relatives have been notified that Pvt. Richard W. Patterson of the Leedy community was killed in action on Kwajalien in the conquest of the Marshall islands, February 2. He was the son of Mrs. William Patterson of near Leedy and was a survivor of the Attu battles, which resulted in the elimination of the Japs from the Aleu­tians. He had been in the army about two years as a machine gunner.

The death in action over Greece on December 20 last of Sgt. Frank Horner has been officially announced to his mother, Mrs. Mina E. King of Shattuck. He had received the Purple Heart for wounds received in north Africa and been decorated also for raids over Rome.

Two Oklahomans Killed in Battle

WOODWARD, April 18. - (Special.) Official notice has been received by relatives of the deaths in action of two northwestern Oklahoma men—Staff Sgt. Lawrence Rexroat of Helena and Pvt. Henry Hager of the Franklin community of Woods county. Rexroat, 23, son of Mrs. Isabella Rexroat of Aline, was reported missing in action on May 20, 1943. He was a turret gunner on a bomber, based in New Guinea. He had been overseas for 15 months. The only report thus far on Hager that he was killed in battle.

Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Garrett, living in Cherokee, have been notified that their son, Sgt. Dean A. Garrett, 21, is missing in action over Austria. He was a radio operator on a Flying For­tress and had been overseas only about six weeks.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stevens of the Sharon community have received notice that their son, Gene Stevens, was rescued following the sinking of the “Houston” in March, 1942, and taken prisoner by the Japs. The card bringing the information has been more than a year enroute, as it was writ­ten in February, 1943.

State Pioneer Dies

Woodward. May 29 - (Special) The city of Waynoka has lost its oldest citizen in the death of J. B. Kepner, 92, who served as mayor there from 1921 to 1924 and had long been a business and civic leader. A native of Nora, Ill., he came to Waynoka in 1913, establishing a mercantile busi­ness, retiring in 1939. Prior to living in Waynoka he had been in business in Sapetha, Kan.

Memorial Is Held Alva For Soldier

WOODWARD, May 15. - (Special.) Memorial services were held in the courthouse park at Alva for S/Sgt. James L. Rine, member of the 45th signal corps, who recently lost his life in service in Italy. The occasion chiefly was for the presentation of an Order of Merit medal awardd him posthumously for outstanding devo­tion to duty.

It was presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rine of Nash, by Col. Murray Gibbons. Ten years ago James U Rine joined the signal corps of the Oklahoma national guard while at­tending college in Alva.

Homesteader Dies

WOODWARD, June 19. (Special.) Funeral services have been held in the Pleasant Valley Union church of northwest Harper county for one of the oldest pioneers, George Girtman, who homesteaded a claim there in 1902. He was 85 years old, native of Pulaski. Ill., and had been married 60 years on May 6 last to Rosella DeMott of Attica, Kan. The survivors in­clude his wife, six children, 12 grand­children and two great-grandchildren

Alva Corporal Dies in Action

WOODWARD, May 23. - (Special.) Cpl. Garland Van Pelt was killed in action on the Italian front, accord­ing to special notification received by his wife, Mrs. Iris Van Pelt of Alva.

The information came from Acting Adj. Gen. Dunlop of the war depart­ment and stated Van Pelt met death on November 27 last. Formerly he had been reported missing in action.

Tractor Fall Fatal

WOODWARD, May 23. - (Special.) Four-year-old Esther Leah Lamun­yon, daughter of Mrs. Clark Lamun­yon of the Speermore community was killed when she fell from a tractor, on which she was riding, and her body was run over by a disc which was being pulled by the tractor. She was riding with an uncle, Rome Brown, preparing ground for planting.

Texan Dies at Mutual

WOODWARD April 18. (Special) Lee Thompson 60, of Wichita Falls, Texas, is dead of heart disease at the farm home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Winters, northwest of Mutual. He was doing some chores when stricken,death coming Immediately He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter

Boise Couple, Wed 60 Years, Dead

WOODWARD June 8. - (Special) The deaths only three days apart, are reported from Boise City of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Noble of that com­munity. Married since July 6, 1885, they had lived together approximately 60 years.

During the most of his life he had been prominent as a teacher and as Superintendent of Schools, having served at St. John, Kingman and other Kansas points, and at various places in New Mexico and in Cimar­ron county.

His wife was the former Florence Kachelman, one of his pupils at King-. man. For several years she served as postmaster at Wheeless in Cimarront county. Funeral for the two was held in St. Paul's Methodist church at Boise City.
