John Charles "J.C." Hampton, 83, of Fort Smith died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Bokoshe, was a retired coal miner, a veteran of the Army and World War II, a first baseman for the Bonanza Blues baseball team 1948 champions.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly Hampton, his parents, Tom and Ethel Hampton, a brother, Ellis Hampton, and five sisters, India Carter, Mary Peerson, Ethel Short, Susie Short and Pearl Hampton Collins.
Funeral will be 2 pm Wednesday at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Smith.
He is survived by one brother, Eugene Hampton and wife, Joann of Torrance, Calif. four sisters, Opal Grigsby and husband, Eules of Friant, Calif., Violet Crowsey of Bonanza, Christine Croxton and husband, Dean of Greenwood, Betty Adams and husband, Dude of Bonanza and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Viewing will be 1 to 9 pm today at the funeral home where the family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 pm.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Orr, James “Skippy” Hampton, Scott and Gary Short, Carl “Cotton” Nemeth and Ricky Nemeth.
Honorary pallbearers will be brothers-in-law and the Bonanza Blues baseball team.
