Joseph "Joe" Elcan, 87, of Heavener, passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, in Fort Smith. He was a resident of Heavener since 1985, a member of the First United Methodist Church, a World War II veteran of the Pacific theater, bred and developed award winning Jersey cattle herd in the 1950s, a former board member of the Arkansas Livestock Exposition, past president of the Arkansas Dairymen's Association, past director of the American Jersey Cattle Club, former mayor of Waldo, Ark., and former member of the Kiwanis Club.
He was preceded in death by one son, Frank Elcan.
Survivors include his wife Christine of the home; one daughter, Pat Dowden and husband Hal of Poteau; one son, Chris Elcan and wife Becky of Innsbrook, Mo.; two sisters, Kate Dawson of Atoka, Tenn. and Freddie Douglas of St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at the First United Methodist Church of Heavener.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 in Waldo Cemetery in Waldo, Ark.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Heavener.
