Samuel Lee Doyle & 
Nora Edna Mason

Samuel Lee Doyle was the firstborn son of Samuel Lafayette and Martha Francis Hughes-Doyle. Sam was born November 23, 1901 in Blackford, Arkansas, Indian Territory. He married Nora Edna Mason of Hartford, Arkansas daughter of James Perry and Martha Lou Ellen Hawkins-Mason on December 08, 1923 in Hodgen, Oklahoma. Four children were born to this union: Paul Emery, Velma Nadine, Wanda Lee and Melvin Samuel. Melvin Lafayette died at the age of three weeks of pneumonia. Sam like his sister, Vi always had a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. He worked for Kansas City Southern Railroad for many years. He owned the pool hall in Heavener, Oklahoma. Sam had to quit school in the third grade due to the untimely death of his dad, Samuel Lafayette. Sam died on March 18, 1973 and is buried in Heavener Memorial Park in Heavener, Oklahoma beside his wife Nora who died August 26, 1972.

Velma, Paul and Wanda, children of Samuel Lee and Nora Edna Mason-Doyle;  great grandchildren of Samuel Lafayette & Anna (Ezell) Doyle; and great great grandchildren of Farmer and Mary "Polly" (Newberry) Doyle.

Velma died in 1970 of colon cancer. Paul died October 5, 1995 in Danville, Arkansas of a heart attack.

A son, Melvin Lafayette Doyle was born December 19, 1934 Worland, Missouri and died January 8, 1935 of pneumonia has no grave marker. He is said to be buried next to grandparents, Samuel and Martha Francis Hughes-Doyle at Hodgen Cemetery.

Velma Nadine Doyle was born September 6, 1926 in Hodgen, Oklahoma. The second child born to Samuel Lee and Nora Edna Mason-Doyle. Velma married Gordon Graftaas in the 1940’s. To this marriage two children were born: Paul Alan and Charlotte. 

Her son, Paul Alan spent most of his life suffering from Polio. He died in 1961 from complications due to the Polio. Velma worked for Montgomery Wards for many years as an order filler. Velma and Gordon lived most of their marriage in Kansas City, Missouri. Velma died November 25, 1970 of colon cancer. She is buried in Mount Washington Cemetery in Kansas City next to her son and husband.

My grandparents Sam and Nora died within three years of this photo.

Sam, Vi and Bill are the children of Samuel Lafayette and Martha Francis Hughes-Doyle. The baby that Vi is holding is her granddaughter, Sabrina Caughern. Sabrina is the youngest child of Zeb and Elka Caughern.

Nora Edna Mason Doyle of Hodgen, Oklahoma passed away on August 26, 1972 in Poteau, Oklahoma.

Nora was born on October 23, 1904 in Hartford, Arkansas, she was the daughter of James Perry and Martha Lou Ellen Hawkins Mason. She had been a resident of Hodgen, Oklahoma the greater part of her life.

Burial was at Heavener Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband Samuel Lee Doyle of the home, daughter, Wanda Lee Branstetter, Independence, Missouri and son, Paul Emery Doyle of Independence, Missouri. One daughter, Velma Grafftas preceded her in death in 1970, one son, died in infancy and grandson Paul Alan Grafftas died of polio in 1963. Brother, Poley Mason of Welch, WV. Sister's, Pearl Shearer and Lillian Elbertson of Poteau. Another sister Lucy Haley of San Pedro, CA. She leaves four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Samuel Lee Doyle, 72, of Hodgen, Oklahoma died Saturday, March 18, 1973 at LeFlore County Memorial Hospital. Services were held Monday, March 20, 1973 at Dowden Funeral Chapel.

Burial was at Heavener Memorial Park.

He was the son of Samuel Lafayette and Martha Francis Hughes Doyle of Hodgen. He worked for the railroad and lived in Hodgen the major part of his life.

His wife Nora Edna Mason Doyle preceded him in death on August 26, 1972. Daughter, Velma Nadine Doyle Grafftas of Kansas City, Missouri died in 1970., Grandson, Paul Alan Grafftas age 16 of Kansas City, Missouri died of polio in 1963. One son died in infancy.

He leaves one daughter, Wanda Branstetter of Independence, Missouri and one son Paul Emery Doyle also of Independence. Three sisters, Viola Caughern of Hodgen, Oklahoma, Mrs. Maude Simmons of Tocoma, Washington, and Carn of Bakersfield, California., one brother Bill of Heavener. Grand-daughters, Paula Gaulter and Linda Doyle of Independence. One grandson, Samuel Joseph Doyle of Independence. Another Grand-daughter, Charlotte Graftass of Kansas City, Missouri.
