Stella Verna Peck Dowell, 93, of Poteau, passed away Friday, May 31, 2002. She was born April 14, 1909 in Killen, Ala.
She was a homemaker. She came to Poteau at age 6 and attended Poteau Schools and married William Horton Dowell at the Methodist Church parsonage in 1926. She retired from Corpus Christi Independent School District and returned to Poteau with her husband. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was the pianist for the First United Methodist Church in Poteau for over 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years; her parents, Frank and Anna Peck; her brothers, Cephus, Fred, Edward, Henry, Julius, Tristam and John; and sisters, Lucy, Ella and Rose.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Stuart and Betty Dowell of Tyler, Texas and Stephen and Deborah Dowell of Poteau; four grandchildren, Denise Billings, Valerie Ford, Sean Dowell and Shera Williams; four great-grandchildren, Travis Ford, Wayne Ford, Erica Ford and Justin Williams; one sister, Evelyn White of Poteau; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives; and loved ones and a host of beloved friends.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 4 at First United Methodist Church in Poteau with the Rev. Larry Gaston officiating. Burial will follow in
Oakland Cemetery under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
