Long Time Area Doctor Passes Away Thursday
A prominent pioneer of LeFlore county died in the Memorial hospital Thursday
at the age of 90 years.
He was Dr. Samuel C. Dean, born in 1872 in Nicholsville, Ky. He came to Howe
in 1901 and actively practiced medicine for 60 years in the Howe area. He was
believed to be the oldest practicing doctor in the state.
In 1951 the Oklahoma Medical association honored him by presenting him with a
50 year pin.
He served as the president of the Howe school board for 25 years. He was the
last surviving charter member of the Masonic lodge at Howe and served as
president and director of the LeFlore County National Bank.
Dr. Dean received his BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his
medical degree from Barnes medical college in St. Louis.
His wife died in 1921 and his only son passed away in 1946. He is survived by
his sister, Mrs. Hallie Hulett, Nicholsville, and many nephews and nieces.
His body rested in state at the Methodist church in Howe until after the
service which was officiated by Rev. Bill Thompson and Rev. Ron Lewis. His
body was returned to Kentucky for burial.
