Violet "Eva Jo" Elder, 89, of Poteau, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002. She was a longtime resident of the area and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church of Poteau, graduate of Haywood Oklahoma High School, NSU in Tahlequah, a retired school teacher, teaching five years in Arizona and 29 in Oklahoma. She was very active in the gospel singing convention serving as secretary of the Oklahoma State Singing Convention.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Siguel Bea Elder; her parents; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Violet Swift and husband Don of Midland, Texas, Clemasue Volk and husband Jay of Red Oak and Wilma Latta of Poteau; one son, Sherman Elder and wife Glenda of Muskogee; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 3 at Trinity Baptist Church in Poteau. Burial followed in Mt. View Cemetery in Howe under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener.
