Description of cemetery:

This historic old burial place is located 2 1/2 miles east of Spiro, OK. on Old US HWY 271 near the settlement of Oak Lodge.

New Hope Cemetery probably got it's start as a burial place due to some of the early deaths of students at New Hope Seminary for girls, which was located just east of the graveyard.

Legible tombstones date back to show birth dates in 1816 and death dates as early as 1842, more than 140 years back in time.

Many members of old Choctaw Indian families are buried in New Hope, although more than 200 are interred in Old Skullyville Indian Cemetery  about 1/2 mile to the west. Some have indicated Old Skullyville predates New Hope which is entirely possible, but readable stone inscriptions do not bear this out. There might be older graves at Skullyville which are unmarked.

New Hope is one of the larges cem. in this part of the country with more than 1890 legible markers, and approx. 1000 unmarked at this date, that can be identified.
