Logan Pioneer, 100, Dies Today In Local Home
Civil War Veteran Who Marched With Sherman Is Dead
Herschel V. Smith, 100 year old Civil war veteran, died this morning at his home, 1304 W. Cleveland.
Smith was born in Kentucky but was reared in Iowa. He served with an Iowa Union regiment which made the famous march from Atlanta to the sea. He was an active member of the G.A.R.
He served eight years as mayor of Crescent, where he lived from 1904 to 1944. He moved to Guthrie a year and a half ago.
Survivors include two sons, Scott S. Smith, Guthrie and Victor Smith, Burbank, CA; two daughters, Mrs A.A. Hart, Crescent and Mrs Gardner Bromley, North Hollywood, CA; nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren, and one great great great grandchild.
Services will be announced by Smith funeral home.
