Sandy and Amelia Allen Family

Sandy Ernest Allen and Amelia Ann Segatha Tapscott were both born during slavery – him in Ohio on October 5, 1863, and her in Texas in April 1864. They married in 1888 (location unknown, but probably Kansas).

Sandy and his brother, Clem, brought their families to Oklahoma Territory in the early 1890s. Clem (a farmer and barber) acquired property near Bison and in Enid, and Sandy (a farmer, carpenter and cabinet-maker) settled near Lacey Township.

Sandy and his wife, Amelia, had six children: Lloyd (1889-1918), Viola 1891-1948), Quincy (1892-1934), Hazel (1895-1963), Edgar, and Jessie. Edgar died in infancy and Jessie died at about age 12. Lloyd, Viola, and Hazel grew up to be school teachers, and Quincy served in the U.S. Army.

Amelia Allen’s death preceded her daughter Jessie’s, but the date is unknown. Her husband, Sandy, spent his senior years in Wichita, Kansas, as proprietor of a carpentry shop. He passed away in Wichita on June 4, 1946, and was subsequently buried near his wife and some of his children in the Jack Moore Cemetery near Lacey, Oklahoma.
