John Thompson

John Henderson Thompson was born April 5, 1867, in Macon County, Missouri, and died at the Waurika hospital, September 2, 1937, after a short illness due to gall bladder trouble. He was smitten about three weeks before his death and was nursed at the home of his nephew, George Thompson of this city, until an operation was advised when he was taken to the hospital.. Surgery however, was of no avail as other complications entered in.

Funeral services were held at the Waurika Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 3:00

And were attended by a large group of old time neighbors and friends as Mr. Thompson had been a resident of Jefferson County for nearly half a century. Rev J. O. Whitworth, pastor of the Waurika Methodist Church had charge of the funeral services and of the committal rites at the grave in the Sudgen Cemetery where the family lot is.

Mr. Thompson moved to Henrietta, Texas, when young and grew to manhood there where he was married in 1894 to Miss Nora Looper. To them were born four children,

three daughters and a son. Only two daughters survive, Mrs. Fannie Swain of Mountainair, New Mexico, and Mrs. Willie Lee Perry of Littlefield, Texas, both of whom were present when their father died and attended the funeral services.

In 1892 Mr. Thompson came to what is now Waurika and grew corn on what is now our Main Street. In 1894 he established a saddle and harness shop here in a little shack where he did a good business and was likely our oldest businessman.

Mrs. Thompson died in 1908 and the day following her death an infant son also passed away. In 1932 a daughter, Blanche, died and was laid to rest by her mother and the baby brother.

In 1928 Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Sarah Miller were married at Waurika and she passed away after several months of illness on March 8, 1936. Since then Mr. Thompson has made his home with his daughters, coming here from Littlefield less than a month ago to attend the Thompson family reunion at Comanche Lake, where he was stricken with his final illness.

Five years ago Mr. Thompson was converted and joined the Methodist Church living true to its doctrines and teachings since that time. He had know many of the vicissitudes of pioneer living; he had worked hard and met with defeat in many instances but he was always kindly disposed and was bound to his family by the strongest ties of affection and loyality. "Big John" as he was affectionately known, will be missed among the walks of all men.
