Jackson County was formed out of
Greer County when it became part of the State of Oklahoma. This area was a
disputed area between Texas and Oklahoma until statehood. It is named after
General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson and as of the 2000 Census has a population
of 28,439 people.
If you are interested in knowing
about the early history of the county (mostly before it was Jackson County)
there are a couple of sources available. One is the web site for the Western
Trails Genealogical Society (see the link below). The other is a book by Dean
Cecil Chesser called "Across the Lonely Years" subtitled "The
story of Jackson County". It is primarily a set of chapters on different
topics and locales in the area in the years of 1880 to 1910.
Jackson County is surrounded by the
counties of Harmon, Greer, Kiowa, and Tillman in Oklahoma. It is also
bordered to the south across the Red River by Hardeman, and Wilbarger counties.

The cemeteries of Jackson county
have been canvassed and published Claudine Dollar. The work was done prior to
publication in 1980, so those interred later than 1980 will not be in the book.
I have a copy of the book and will do lookups for up to two names in the book.
Please send an email to me at the link provided below. If you would like your
own copy of the book to lookup more people please contact Claudine at [email protected] .
Please do NOT contact Claudine for lookups!
In addition Tammy Davis, who works
at the Altus library is willing to do lookups in both the cemetery book and
other sources that she has for cemetery listings. You can contact her at [email protected]. Make sure you put
her name in the subject line of your email.
The library has a significant
amount of holdings from the early Altus newspapers to family files that many
have contributed. Tammy will also do basic research in the holdings they have
for a fee starting at $3. This assumes you have some relevant information such
as names and full dates. You can contact her at the same email address above
for more information.
The Jackson County website is a
member of both OKGENWEB and USGENWEB. Clicking on either symbol will take
you to the website of each project.
