When I was about 6, there was a grocery store on the Motley Hotel corner. The butcher-owner-managers name was Bishop Ricketts. He was a tall slender man. That is where my parents traded for what little they needed other than what we raised or produced salt, flour sugar, coffee.
Bishop Ricketts would always get word to Mother when he had sugar so she could get sugar for canning, etc. when things were rationed. My goodness thats been a long time ago.
My memory is that I had a tooth that was loose and wouldnt let anyone pull it. Sooooooo he (Bishop Ricketts) gave me a big shiny apple which promptly pulled my tooth. That would have been in about 1942 or 43.
Bill Metcalf also remembers Mr. Ricketts. He was the manager of the EZ Grocery Store. This was in the early 40s during WW II. The EZ was owned by Mr. Ruby Garrett from Mangum. Mr. Garrett had little grocery stores in several towns in SW Oklahoma. He would hire a young fellow with promise as the manager of each.
When Paul Metcalf returned from the US Navy he bought the EZ and later moved it to Kirby Corner.
