A Place Called: Gould, Oklahoma

By
Memories of Bill Cannedy April 7, 2004

In 1941, my world consisted of the business and their owners or managers within the city limits of Gould, Oklahoma. All of these people treated me as a family member.

  • Mr. Putnam, owner of the cotton gin in Gould.
  • Mr. Dickerson, the barber and owner of the public bathhouse.
  • Mr. Shrewder, owner of the Gould Hatchery Company.
  • Mr. Johnny Baker, owner operator of the Gould Steam Laundry.
  • Mr. E. Q. Anderson, owner of Anderson General Merchandise.
  • Mr. H. A. Wade, owner of the general Supply.
  • Mr. Eddie Ervin, owner of the Confectionary store
  • The Reeves Brothers owned the First State Bank
  • Mr. and Mrs. Roberts owned the Hardware Store.
  • Marshall Carroll owned a Ford dealership, the M&M Tractor Company and a Service Station and Garage
  • Mr. Stegall repaired watches and operated a scrap metal business.
  • Mr. Hugh Beanland owned a wholesale gasoline and oil business and a Chevrolet Dealership.
  • Mr. Bill Hamilton ran the Gould Caf.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Nelson owned the Gould Grocery and Meat Market.

My father, Ray Cannedy, operated the GOULD ELEVATOR COMPANY for Mr. Sam Carmack. On May 17, 1941, when school was out, they allowed me to climb the 151 steps to the top of the elevator and the head house, where the grain was weighted and dropped from that height into boxcars to be shipped to market. That became my summer job.

From that height, my world expanded beyond the City limits of Gould, Oklahoma. I could see wheat being harvested for a distance of several miles, fields were being prepared for planting cotton and grain sorghum and I could see McQueen Store.

I could see, I could see, I could see! A much bigger world.

Now in my mid seventies, I have seen a big portion of the world. No portion is as special as those boyhood memories: of a special place called Gould, Oklahoma.
