Fall in Harmon County

BY

Kaye Olson Adkins Class of '61

Fall in Harmon county brings back wonderful memories of cool frosty nights after the long summer heat. The fields are full of cotton, ready to be harvested and soon the big combines will be combing the fields.

The minute you get into town, the smell of ginned cotton is in the air, sometimes smelling like popcorn, sometimes like ham. It fills the senses. There is excitement in the air with all the football games, pumpkins and mums everywhere. The town seems alive again anticipating the good harvest. Jackets, sweaters, wool skirts and cuddeling at the drive-in with your best beau. The leaves on the trees turning red and gold. The hay bundles ready for the winter feed are beautifully stacked in the fields under the bright full moon light. God is in his Heaven and all seems right.

Being with your family on a Sunday night while watching tv, sharing a fresh batch of popcorn and drinking hot chocolate, all the while being cuddled up to a warm fire. The anticipation of all the family being together again for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pep rallys in the school auditorium... Frost on the pumpkins, Halloween and trick or treators. Thanksgiving and Christmas programs being planned at school...

I wouldn't trade the sweet memories I have of my Hollis in Harmon County. Somehow, I can't imagine a better place to be, at least back then...Than in Harmon County Oklahoma, USA in the fall. I'm so glad I was there.

Blessings,
