Hollis & Ron High Schools kicked off the summer with their annual alumni, May 29, 2010. The Museum was occupied and full of activity with former students expounding on the past and bringing everyone up to the present.

The Lady Quilters of Harmon County have just finished putting in the last stitches of Sunbonnet Sue, this years quilt to be raffled off at the Cotton Pickin Festival, October 9, 2010. Come by the Museum and admire the work of these talented ladies.

The Cotton Pickin Festival is sponsored annually by the Harmon County Historical Society. Make your plans now to attend a fun filled day the second Saturday in October. Volunteers are needed to make this festival succeed.
Please call or come by the Museum if you wish to contribute items or prizes. An hour of your time working one of the booths, or helping with the desserts, would be greatly appreciated.

The Museum is a non-profit organization, and cannot survive without your continued support of donations, memberships and memorials. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. Dues are $15.00 for one person, and $25.00 per couple. The money is used to pay the curator, utilities, office supplies, and other items such as minor repairs on the Museum.

We still have a plentiful supply of t-shirts in all sizes for sale.

We are getting great feed back on our book, PLANNING THE ROUTE 3. The cost is still $75.00.

We invite all interested parties to attend any or all Museum Board Meetings.
Input from the community is very valuable, and essential for the future of Harmon County Historical Society.

Below is a form for purchase of a book or membership dues:

MARCH 2009 NEWSLETTER ISSUE

Fall 2009 NEWSLETTER ISSUE:

2009 Greetings to each of you,

The Harmon County volunteers of the Museum sponsored the first Cotton Pickin Festival on October 3rd. It was decided that August was just too hot for volunteers and visitors, so it was changed from Black Eyed Pea Festival to the Cotton Pickin Festival. The festival happened during a week-end that almost every town around had some special activity going on, so it may be necessary to change the date for next year.

You are needed to attend the annual meeting to be held on October 27th at 6:00 pm at the Museum. Your ideas and input are welcome and needed

This year there was not a Jack Rabbit Junction play. There was difficulty getting it planned, and writing of the script. However, children furnished a few animals for a petting zoo at the Junction. United Grocery Store sold balloons there, and Stockmans Bank handed out candy. Just across the street from the bank, the former John Deere Building housed a quilt show. Those who like quilts were delighted to see them, as some were antique quilts from the Museum. Several were friendship quilts.

Bingo was played in the little park east of the Museum, as well as fun photos were taken behind painted scenes. Vendors were on both sides of the street. The Lions Club started the day early with a breakfast at 7:00 a.m., and the parade at 9:00 a.m.

A delicious brisket meal with all the trimmings was served at noon at the Civic Center, followed by a tour of the Co-op Cotton Gin. During the parade the announcement of the winner of the Autumn Decorating Contest was Stockmans Bank.

Also, Betty Motley was honored with an award for outstanding contributions to our community. (That means a lot of her time, sweat and work). She worked diligently with the We Love Hollis action groups that cleaned, painted, mowed and hauled out trash. This started with Mission Hollis from the First Baptist Church. It made such an impression, that other churches and groups joined in the effort to clean up our town. Wow! What an impact it has made. Betty also edited the book, PLANNING THE ROUTE III. The books are for sale at the Museum for $75.00 plus $6.00 for postage if mailed.

This being Harmon Countys centennial year, we ordered two different t-shirts for this occasion. They are each $15.00. The blue t-shirt has Cotton Pickin Festival 2009 printed on the front. On the back in white letters are the names of the donors who made contributions to the Museum. The second t-shirt says 100 Years in Harmon County, OK 1909 2009. The color scheme is beige background with brown lettering.

Again, the Harmon County Opry out did themselves to present some amazing talent. During the break, the little Cotton Princess was crowned, the winner for the Museum quilt was drawn, and the second Museum quilt was auctioned off. If you were not here for the festival, you missed one of the highlights of the year for Harmon County. Thank you for coming if you were able to attend. Please put this on your calendar to attend next year.

The election of officers will be held Tuesday, October 27th at 6:00 pm at the Museum. Please note this on your calendar to attend. Lawrence Tomah, will be our guest speaker. He donated a flag in his daughter, Isabellas, honor. The flag, Lords of the Southern Plains, Comanche Nation, hangs proudly with the rest of historical banners.

If you have not paid yours dues for 2009, we hope you will do so very soon. For individuals the cost is $15.00, and for couples, the cost is $25.00. This money is used to pay utilities, office supplies, the curator, and other items such as minor repairs on the Museum.

Volunteers have been so helpful and willing to work. You are very much appreciated. Thank you. This museum would not be here if it were not for members, volunteers and donors of artifacts.

Memorials are given in remembrance of someone or an Honorarium for a birthday or an anniversary. That money is put into a savings account to help fund the Museum with interest. Anything is appreciated. Family and/or friends will be notified of your donations.

Below is a purchase form for a book, membership dues or a t-shirt.
