Just in case that you have begun to wonder, the first paragraph of this History was devoted to the forty-four school Principals in Harmon County.
There were Schools in Harmon before it was made a county in 1909. But since records are vague we are only concerning ourselves with Harmon County. According to the records there were forty-four small schools in Harmon County the first year it existed.
As far as we can ascertain only two of the original principals are still living in Harmon County. Sally Gillentine is Elementary Principal of the Hollis Public Schools and E Q Anderson is County Commissioner of District #3 and lives in Gould. The remainder have moved, married, or deceased and it has become difficult to get an accurate check as to their whereabouts.
Though the number of teachers has increased, the number of schools has decreased from forty-four to nine. Of these nine, two are independent, one common and six dependent fully accredited high schools.
The number of schools did not begin to diminish until 1916 when Edgeworth No 148 annexed to Shrewder No 106. In May 1917 Looney No 5, Liberty No 38 and Willow Grove No 112 combined to form U G No 1. In June 1919 Dollar Hill No 63 and Dryden No 2 formed U G 2.In August of the same year Gould No 6 and Bluff Land No 129 formed U G 6. In 1923 Lakeview No 8, Star Valley No 50, Mosquite No 80 and Bearden No 122 formed C-7. In the same year Purvis Hill No 34 and Pleasant Hill No 162 formed U G 3. In 1925 Number Two and Fairview No 55 formed U G 9. In 1938 Valley View No 85, Bitter Creek No 86 and Sypert Hill No 147 formed C-11 by consolidation. In 1938 Dryden No 2, McKnight No 54, Dollar Hill No 63, Teacross No 74 and Metcalf No 83 consolidated and formed C-12. In 1920 Vinson came into existence as a consolidated school and is now composed of Hurst No 163, Sulphur No 113, Vinson No 143, Cave Creek No 57, Independence No 68, Madge No 125, Union Grove No 10 and Union Hill No 101. During this interim Coralea became a part of McQueen and Goodwell, Lakeview No 8 and Red Top No 53 attached to Hollis, Lincoln No 116 became a part of Lincoln in Jackson County. Purvis Hill No 34, Pleasant Hill No 162, and Bethel No 61 consolidated to form C-3 The largest district in the county is Vinson with 113 square miles. The smallest is Westview with 17 square miles. The average area is 44 square miles. Hollis has the largest Average Daily Attendance with 609. Carl has the least with 22. The average A D A is 253.
