HISTORICAL NOTE
Oklahoma became the 46th state on
November 16, 1907. Harper County is located in Northwestern
Oklahoma. It was created from Woods County
OK and Woodward County
OK, and Indian Lands. Harper County was named for Oscar Greene
Harper, a clerk in the 1907 Oklahoma Constitutional Convention which
convened at Guthrie,
Oklahoma Territory. County government was organized 1 January
1908.
Harper County is bordered on the north
by Clark
County KS and Coma
nche County KS, on the East by Woods County
OK and Woodward County
OK, on the South by Ellis County OK
and on the West by Beaver County OK.
Many of Harper County's early settlers
lived in these neighboring counties, and some of their descendants
still live on the original homesteads. Harper County was part of the
Cherokee Outlet.
Please take the time to check these links for your ancestors names.
I know that many descendants of the original homesteaders still live
in this area.
Please use the RESOURCES page to search for your
elusive ancestors. It's where you'll find QUERIES and other resources. I'm not able to do
your research for you, so please don't ask me to send all information
on your ancestors. My "job" is to coordinate the information for
this site to enable you to find your ancestors.Be sure to stop at the
OKGenWeb
Resources Page.
If you are searching for a different
Oklahoma county, check the ALL
OKLAHOMA COUNTIES LIST.

Records Prior to 1907
Prior to statehood in 1907, few death
records were kept. For county records prior to 1907, see Woodward
or Woods county. The best way to trace your ancestor may
be through county land records. Another possibility would be old newspapers, some of which
may be on microfilm for that time period at a public library. Check
the Oklahoma
Department of Libraries to see if an Oklahoma library has an
email or web address. The Buffalo High School has some newspapers on
microfilm. You can contact the High School for more information:
