The Hughes Family

 

William Rockne Hughes was born April 7, 1935 in Woodward, Oklahoma.  He was the son of William Hankins Hughes and Alyce Cottom.  June 6, 1957, he married Carol Kay Carlberg, who was born in February 1938 in Wichita, Kansas.

          Children:

·        Brett Rockne Hughes, born April 21, 1959

·        Lisa Michelle Hughes, born July 26, 1960

 

 

William Hankins Hughes, son of John Overton Hughes, was born March 24, 1900, Hoyle, Oklahoma Territory.  December 22. 1926, he married Alyce Cottom, born February 10, 1907, in Ames, Oklahoma.

          Children, all born in Oklahoma:

·        Lila Hughes, born December 12, 1927 Ames

·        Rita Carol Hughes, born Nov. 25, 1929, Enid

·        James Montford Hughes, born Jan. 4, 1933, Cherokee

·        William Rockne Hughes, born April 7, 1935, Woodward

 

 

John Overton Hughes, son of John James Hughes and Louisa Ellen Denney, was born September 2, 1875, in Missouri; died November 11, 1927, in Ames, Oklahoma.  On Jan. 1, 1898, he married Maggie Belle Hankins, born July 8, 1878 in Panola, Kansas; died February 10, 1943 in Ames, Oklahoma.

          Children:

·        William Hankins Hughes, born March 24, 1900

·        Esta Reola Hughes, born December 5, 1905; married Emil Rheuben Seward

Children:

 

1.     William Robert Steward, born March 5, 1929, Ames, Okla.

2.     Patricia Ann Steward, born July 15, 1930, Enid, Okla.

 

 

John James Hughes, son of William Hughes and Martha Ann Terry, was born April 25, 1846 in Moultrie Co., Illinois; died August 5, 1926, Ames, Oklahoma.  On September 8, 1868, he married Louisa Ellen Denney, born 30 May 1853 in Texas Co., Missouri; died July 3, 1929 in Ames, Oklahoma.  She was the daughter of William Denney, born ca. 1827, Kentucky and wife, Amanda Elizabeth Stephens, born ca. 1834, Tennessee.  Amanda was the daughter of Benjamin Stephens, born ca. 1806, Tennessee and Elizabeth Gray, born ca. 1810, North Carolina.

          Children:

·        Albert Rudolph Hughes, born August 24, 1869, Texas Co., Missouri; died Oct. 6, 1960, Miami, Oklahoma, age 91 years

·        Willie M. Hughes, born March 7, 1872

·        John Overton Hughes, b. Sept. 2, 1875; died Nov. 11, 1929, Ames, Okla.

·        Esta Louzaida Hughes, born Nov. 11, 1881; married Luther M. Mathis.  They had one child, Gail born 6 Nov. 1908

·        Sabra Iris Hughes

·        James Leo Hughes, born Oct. 9, 1892; died Dec. 3, 1949, Oklahoma City; married Lucille Yeoman, and they had one child, Helen Margaret Hughes

·        Samuel Douglas Hughes, born Oct. 5, 1897.  He married Gertrude Ray and had two children:  Sabra Louise Hughes, born Jan. 18, 1917, Stillwater, Okla., and June Hughes, b. in June at Ames, Okla.

 

 

William Hughes, son of Dr. Samuel Hughes and wife, _____ Wolford. William was born July 10, 1819, in Tennessee.  On July 4, 1841, he married Martha Ann Terry, born September 28, 1817 in Indiana, or Irish descent.  She died December 8, 1876.

          Children:

·        Samuel Franklin Hughes, born July 3, 1842

·        Sarah E. Hughes, born March 21, 1844

·        John James Hughes, born April 25, 1846; died April 25, 1926, at Ames, Okla.

·        William R. Hughes, born June 11, 1849

·        Isaac N. Hughes, born April 4, 1851; died April 16, 1855

·        Mary J. Hughes, born December 12, 1853; died November 17, 1861

·        Martha C. Hughes, born September 11, 1855

·        Miles J. Hughes, born July 28, 1857

·        Albert N. Hughes, b. March 26, 1859

 

 

Dr. Samuel Hughes, son of Dr. Abner Hughes and wife, Millie De Peyster, practiced medicine until he was 92 years old.  He married _____ Wolford.  They had at least one son, William Hughes, and probably others.

 

 

Dr. Abner Hughes came from Wales with his brother.  He married Millie De Peyster, who came from Holland.  They had at least one son, Dr. Samuel Hughes and perhaps others.
